(23 Oct 1919, Elk City Newspaper, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): JOHN L. WINTERS COMMITS SUICIDE The people of this vicinity were greatly shocked last Friday when they learned that John L. Winters, a well known citizen of Berlin had committed suicide by drinking cabolic (sic) acid, at a hotel in Amorilla (sic), Texas. Mr. Winters had always been of a cheerful nature, seemingly ever looking on the bright side, and a few months ago we chronicled his marriage, since which time he had seemed perfectly happy. It was learned later he had worried considerable about business matters the past few weeks. He purchased a ticket to go to his son, Roy Winters, at Springfield, Colorado. When at Amorilla he went in a cab to a hotel, telling the hotel porter that he wanted to rest and did not give any certain time to be awakened. While in the room he drank carbolic acid and was found by the people in the hotel several hours later. He left a note making some simple directions in regard to business and asking that no one be blamed. His son, Nove Winters of Berlin, went after the body and the funeral services were held at Berlin (Roger Mills County) last Sunday, the 19th, conducted by Rev. Vaughn of Sayre, all of the children being present. Frank Winters came from Oklahoma City, Roy and Joe Winters came from Springfield, Colorado. Mr. Winters was sixty-two years of age and has lived around Berlin since the early days. He had many friends and his tragic death is regretted by all. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
