A. Wright Called To Texas Last Sunday. W. A. Wright received a message Sunday evening from Cuero, Texas, announcing the death of his nephew, Welton Wright, which occurred there on that day. The message contained no particulars. Mr. and Mrs. Wright did not know that the young man was ill, and this leads to the belief that death was the result of an accident. He was 24 years old. Mr. Wright will remain in Texas several days. (18 May 1916, Thursday, Elk City Leader, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Mrs. W. A. Wright has been advised by her husband, who was called to Cuero, Texas, last week on account of the death of their nephew, Welton Wright, that the young man had met death in an automobile accident. It was feared by Mr. and Mrs. Wright when the message arrived that death had resulted from an accident, as they had not been advised that the young man was ill. The following account of his death is taken from a paper published at Cuero: "Welton Wright, aged 24, bookkeeper for the Cook & Day Motor Co. of this city, was killed in an auto accident at the S. P. stock pens, just the other side of Thomaston Sunday as he was driving the car and accompanied by Emil Fuess and Marvin Cook all of this city. From an injured tire the car turned over and righted itself. Mr. Wright being thrown some distance away and clear of the car. He must have fallen upon his head and fractured his neck, as there were almost no signs of external injuries. He lived a short while and talked perfectly rational, but was dead when one of his companions returned with a physician in probably less than half an hour. Emil Fuess received some abrasions upon the scalp, but they are of minor consequence. He was the only one of the three who did not clear the car. The remains of the deceased young man were taken to the family home at Thomaston. He was the youngest son of Mr. J. R. Wright, a river planter at Thomaston and one of DeWitt county's very best citizens. Young Wright was a man of quiet, courteous demeanor and made many friends. The whole city is greatly shocked and grieved at his untimely end. He was a bright, handsome young man and very orderly and business like in the service of his employers, whose office he ran. The funeral will occur at 4 o'clock Tuesday at Thomaston, being deferred to permit the arrival of his uncle, W. A. Wright of Oklahoma state." --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
