Rev. Sebe J. Thomas officiating. The Democrat extends congratulations with best wishes for a long and happy life together. STEEL-POTEETE (13 April 1911, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Twice Married In One Day. Last Sunday morning Mr. Jesse L. Steel and Miss Mattie M. Poteete, both of Carter, were married at the home of Mrs. Lucy Thompson, living northwest of this place, Rev. Erkhart officiated. After the ceremony was performed and congratulations were tendered, those present were seated to a bountiful dinner that done (sic) full credit to the culinary proficiency of the hostess. As this was Rev. Erkhart's first attempt at tying matrimonial knots, and consequently was somewhat flustered, he had overlooked the fact that he had performed the ceremony in the county of Washita. But, the groom having no intention of allowing the prize he had captured to be lost to him on such a frivolous technical ground as that, proposed that they wend their way to the good old Beckham county soil and try it over again. This was done, and the minister after fully satisfying himself that he was on the proper territory, proceeded to once again tie the knot that bound two loving hearts now, and evermore. The doubly newly weds returned to Carter Sunday evening where another sumptuous repast awaited them at the International Hotel, the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Steele (sic). The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Poteet (sic), and is a young lady of many redeeming traits of character that have won for her a host of friends. The groom is a young man of sterling qualities and the friends of both join with the News in wishing this happy couple a long, happy and prosperous life. HUGHES-HARTMAN (2 Aug 1911, Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Married At the home of the father and mother of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. M. Hartman on Second St., Mr. Roy E. Hughes of Clinton, Okla., and Miss Lulu Hartman of this city. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. B. G. Taylor, pastor of the Presbyterian Church immediately after the morning service at the church under the beautiful shade trees that stand in the yard. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
