G. Scott on Broadway, when their youngest daughter, Carmen, was joined in matrimony to Mr. Frank Gilkerson in the presence of relatives, Rev. Orman C. King, officiating. The young couple left on the afternoon train for Oklahoma City to spend several days and will also visit a short time in Lawton, when they will return and go to their new home recently built by the groom on North Adams and which is furnished ready for housekeeping. We do not have to tell who this young couple is, for they have lived here since childhood and are known to all. Frank is the eldest son of C. S. Gilkerson, with whom he is associated in the law business and he seems to be especially adapted for this calling. Carmen has assisted her parents in the Elk City State Bank, but she is of a domestic turn of mind, having taken domestic art and science in the Girls School at Chickasha, and is a graduate of our High School. She attended O.U. at Norman one year and is a very accomplished young lady. The best wishes of the News Democrat and their many friends are extended for happiness and a long life together. The wedding was a surprise to a number of our people, though Lee's friends knew there was a great attraction at Carter all the time. They came on to Elk City and will make this their home, as Lee has a position in the Gregory Drug Store, where he has made many friends in his courteous manner in which he looks after the customers there. He is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ack Davis and is a most exemplary young man and a member of the Methodist church. The bride is well know to Elk City people, having attended school here, graduating in our High School last year. She is a very attractive young lady. The brothers received a letter from their parents, saying to start Lillie home the following Monday. They did so. When she got to Amorilla (sic) she met her sweetheart, Mr. Clark when they were married and sent her parents a telegram and certainly surprised her brothers by returning to them accompanied by her husband on Wednesday. They will reside in Amorilla. We all extend congratulations. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Richerson, old settlers of Roger Mills county. We are not acquainted with Mr. Clark, but we are sure he is a fine gentleman to have gained the confidence of Lillie. WHITE-HENRY (8 Nov 1923, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MARRIES GRANDDAUGHTER OF W. T. FOSTER James White returned to Elk City last week accompanied by a charming bride, formerly Miss Bess Henry, of St. Joseph, Mo., and the wedding ceremony was performed in that city on October 29th. We all know him, and his friends are counted by his acquaintances. He served in the late war, being a lieutenant. It was while he was at Fort Riley that he met his wife for the first time. She was visiting a sister there and one day she and her sister went kodaking. An order had been given that no pictures be made of anything pertaining to the army, but these ladies did not think of that as they saw a cannon that they wished to take a picture of, but Lieutenant White saw them from a distance and went to them to tell them they had better desist. The younger girl "talked back" a little, then Jim talked back, and the married sister later said she didn't think they would ever get through talking to each other. But, before the young lady left she had a picture of Jim sitting on that cannon, which is now among their most prized possessions. During the war they corresponded and when en route overseas Jim called to see her. This romance culminated last week in their marriage. The bride is a granddaughter of W. T. Foster, the weather man of Washington, and she acted as his secretary for some time. She is a most lovely young lady, very accomplished and is quite a musician both with piano and on violin. She is also quite a writer, inheriting this no doubt from her illustrious grandfather. His forecasts of weather are read by many thousands in Oklahoma each week. At one time he lived in our old home town, Bethany, Mo., and was a great friend of Dr. J. C. Blackburn, father of W. L. Blackburn. Knowing many of the relatives and friends, we were glad indeed to meet with the bride and enjoyed very much talking about "Aunt Kit Walker", "Aunt Lou Foster" and others. Her grandfather is now 86 years old and keeps busy at his work, taking a long walk each day, and is as bright in intellect as ever. His wife is still living. They have been married over sixty years, so Jim can rest assured he will be able to have, as we all wish for him and his bride, a long and happy wedded life. Mr. White, or Jim, as we want to call him, is in the internal revenue service looking after income tax department. He has been located at Muskogee for some time but lately has been transferred to Tulsa. He is not only one of our handsomest young men, but is one who is held in the highest respect of all who know him. Mr. and Mrs. White left Tuesday night for their new home in Tulsa, followed by the best wishes of the New Democrat family and many friends. GOEHRING-TAYLOR (22 Nov 1923, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Miss Blanche Taylor and Mr. Ervin Goehring, both of Elk City, were married last Thursday evening, November 15th, 1923, by Rev. John A. Tracy at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry F. Ward on West Third street. The bride has been with the telephone company here for several years. She is a niece of T. Henry Taylor, formerly a resident of Elk City, but now of Spearman, Texas. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Taylor of Hydro. She is a very charming young lady with a very pleasing personality. She spent two years in Weatherford Normal before coming to Elk City. The groom has lived here many years and for a while was associated with his brothers in the grocery business. He was a soldier in the late war. For some time he has been associated with Mr. Devaney in business. He is a splendid young man. The young couple went to Clinton Friday evening to spend the weekend with his sister Dollie, who is living there at present. They will make their home on East Broadway. ---------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
