All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== MARRIAGE CLIPPINGS -1924 JOHNSON-WELLS (31 Jan 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Miss Flossie Wells and Wroten Johnson were united in marriage Jan. 23, 6:00 o'clock P.M. at the Methodist parsonage at Sayre by Rev. J. C. Morris. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mrs. M. A. Wells living northeast of Elk City. She is a very accomplished young lady having taught school for several years. She attended South-Western State Teachers College four years and during this time she won many friends. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Johnson living south west of Elk City. He is a very highly respected young man, and has many friends. Mr. Johnson is one of our soldier boys who served in the recent World's war. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson will be at home east of Elk City after January 24. Congratulations are extended to them by their many friends. STRAWN - DOWNS (27 Mar 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Robert James Strawn and Miss Phara Ila Downs were married at the bride's home last Saturday evening, Rev. E. D. Hamilton, officiating. This young couple is quite popular with their friends here, the groom being one of our splendid young men of whom no one can say aught against. The bride is a very charming young lady. She has been with the Sugar Bowl for some time where she has made many friends. QUEENAN - DONNELLY (5 May 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Cards were received last week from Mr. and Mrs. James Donnelly of Olympia, Washington, announcing the marriage of their daughter, Kathlyn Irene to Jerome G. Queenan at their home in Olympia, Tuesday, April 25. Mr. Queenan was the recent postmaster of Elk City, and is now a banker at Haynesville, La., where he has been very successful in several oil lease investments, and Miss Donnelly was his very efficient assistant, who held down the position here since last winter when Mr. Queenan severed his connection, and until she was relieved by the new postmaster, E. C. Willison, the first of April. The happy couple will spend a month in California, when they will be at home in Haynesville after June 1st. HAYES - DOLLINS (5 May 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Roy Hayes and Miss Anna Dollins were married Wednesday, April 24, by Rev. E. D. Hamilton, at the home of I. L. Flannagan. Those witnessing ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Staley, Miss Sarah Campbell, Mrs. Ethel Colvard and Mrs. Flannigan and children. The bride is the charming daughter of W. E. Dollins of Wheeler, Texas, and she is a very accomplished young lady and has a large circle of friends. The groom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Hayes and is a fine young man and also has a host of friends. The News Democrat join with all in wishing them a long, happy and prosperous wedded life. SHOOK - FERGUSON (12 Jun 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MARRIED Mr. C. E. Shook and Miss Dovie Ferguson were married at the altar of the First M. E. Church on Wednesday, May 4th, Rev. T. Walter officiating. Among those who witnessed the ceremony were her mother, Mrs. Ferguson, her brother, Don Ferguson, Mrs. Edgar Dye, daughter of Mr. Shook and Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Young. After the ceremony and congratulations all repaired, including Rev. and Mrs. Walter, to the home of Edgar Dye, where a lovely dinner was served. That evening Mr. and Mrs. Shook were given a rousing charivari by the neighbors and friends, there being 75 present and more would have been there had not the weather been threatening. After the crowd gained entrance to the home they offered their heartiest congratulations to the happy couple, then they were treated to ice cream and a happy time was enjoyed. Mr. and Mrs. Shook have lived in the Pixlee neighborhood for some time, where they have won the high esteem of all and they join with the News Democrat in wishing them a long happy and prosperous wedded life. CORDLE - SUTTON (12 Jun 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MARRIED Rev. N. Cordle and Mrs. Mary A. Sutton were married at the home of Mrs. Simpson, on North Madison, on Sunday, Rev. Lemmex officiating. The groom is seventy years old and the bride is sixty-five, but they seem to be the happiest couple in the world. They are keeping house in the apartments formerly occupied by Rev. Cordle. Rev. Cordle used to be a pastor in the Primitive Baptist Church. He is now in charge of the Library building and keeps it and the yard in fine shape. He is very energetic and gets around better than many men years younger. Mrs. Cordle was formerly with the Mission on Third street and is a consecrated christian woman. She formerly lived near Doxey, going there in the early day. The best wishes of many friends are being extended to Mr. and Mrs. Cordle and all hope they may enjoy many happy, and prosperous years. CHRISTIAN - EDGINGTON (Jun 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Announcement of the wedding of Miss Bernice Edgington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Edgington, of Durham, Okla., to Mr. Ralph Christian was received here yesterday. The bride's many friends in and around Elk City will be interested in learning of her marriage and join the News Democrat in offering their heartiest congratulations. Mr. and Mrs. Christian will make their home in Canadian, Texas. WELCH - McADOO (3 Jul 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): In Sunday's Oklahoman the marriage license notice of Opal Bowen McAdoo and F. L. Welch was printed. As yet we have not heard when or where the wedding ceremony was performed. The bride is known as Opal Bowen, being the daughter of Mrs. Chas. Bowen of this city. She graduated from Elk City schools in '23 and was a charter member of the Rainbow Girls and is quite popular with her friends. Mr. Welsh (sic) was in the oil business at Sayre, and made many friends while here. SCHONES - MECHEK (24 Jul 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): One of the prettiest weddings of the season was that of Miss Rose Mechek and Mr. Edward Schones which took place at St. Francis Church, Scheidel near Canute Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock July 15, Rev. Alphonse Herenthals officiating, Miss Henerietta Taylor, niece of the bride as bridesmaid and Mr. Bill Schones, brother of the groom, as best man. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Mechek and is a charming and very sweet young lady has grown to womanhood in this vicinity and will make a happy home and true helpmate for her husband. She wore a lovely white satin with pearl beads she wore a wreath and veil and carried a bouquet of pink roses and gladiolas. The groom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schones and is a capable young man he has been helping his father on the farm all his life and has also grown to manhood in this vicinity. This wedding will not surprise their many friends as they have been sweethearts since childhood. After the ceremony the happy young couple went to the home of the bride's parents where a sumptious dinner was served to near relatives and friends also at night they gave a big dance at the Lamm hall. GOEHRING - WHITE (24 Jul 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): LOUIE GOEHRING MARRIED Louis Goehring and Miss Nita White were married at the home of and by Rev. Adams. They left the following day for Wichita Falls the bride's home where they will visit awhile. She is a graduate nurse of the University Hospital and is a charming young lady, making many friends during her stay here. Louie is one of Elk City's best young men. He has always been full of business and one not afraid of work. He has been in Oklahoma City for some time. The best wishes of their friends is extended to the happy couple and in these the News Democrat wishes to join. TURBYFILL - ALBRIGHT (31 Jul 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MARRIED John Turbyfill and Mrs. Lily Albright were married on July 5th, but it was kept quiet and but few friends learned about it until lately. John with the Williams Miler Gin Co., and they will make their home in Elk City. WEBB - SPANN (7 Aug 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Homer Webb of Elk City and Miss Gus Spann of Guthrie were married at the First Baptist Church of Guthrie last Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. After the wedding the bride and groom left for a short visit with relatives in Oklahoma City. They are expected to return to Elk City, Thursday. Mr. Webb is well known in Elk City. He is a brother of C. C. Webb and has interest in the Oklahoma Butter Co. He is a splendid young man and held in the high esteem of all. Mrs. Webb has been teaching school at Orlando for the past year and has many friends there. She is a very charming young lady and will receive a glad welcome to Elk City. The News Democrat join with many friends in extending congratulations. TURPIN - McFARLAND (14 Aug 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): JOHN TURPIN MARRIED John Turpin left here about nine months ago for California. It must have been "fate" that had a hand in his going, for the other day he returned home with a bride, whom he married on July 28th, in Ocean Park, California, in the Baptist parsonage. Her name was Miss Mary McFarland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. McFarland of Sawtelle, California. Her parents lived in the same block where John was boarding while he was helping to build a school building at Sawtelle, and they met! Thus cupid did his work and the wedding was the consequence. The bride was in Junior year in High School at Santa Monica, California. She formerly lived at Copperal, Texas, and her father is a retired ranchman of that State. She has won all whom she has met here, and all realize that John has truly won a great prize. John is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Turpin and one of our very best young men, held in the highest respect by all who know him, and we feel, as all do that his bride has won a splendid helpmate for her partner during life's journey. He is a graduate of Elk City High School class of 1920, and is very popular with all here. John and his wife will be at the home of his parents northwest of town for the present. They made the trip here in auto in eight days, stopping at Grand Canyon, Arizona, also coming through the Petrified Forest. They enjoyed the trip very much. JOSEPH - McMENAMY (28 Aug 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MARRIED Virgil B. Joseph of Doxey and Miss Lucy Edith McMenamy now of Texas but formerly of Elk City were married by Judge R. W. Jones at his home on last Tuesday afternoon. They were accompanied by the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Joseph. They will make their home on a farm near Doxey. The News Democrat extends best wishes for a long and happy wedded life. HUNTER - DAVIS (11 Sep 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): VERT HUNTER MARRIED A surprise to friends in Elk City was the wedding last Saturday evening of Mr. Vert Hunter of Elk City and Miss Helen Davis of Woodward. They were married here by Rev. Tracy at the Presbyterian Manse. The bride, who is a charming young lady, is the daughter of Mrs. A. B. Tevis of Woodward. The bride groom has lived in Elk City the greater part of his life, being employed at the Hixon Drug Store for a number of years, then with Gregory's and he met his bride while in a drug store at Woodward. He is now employed at the Palace Drug Store. Vert is true blue and a fine young man. He has a host of friends here who join us in wishing for him and his wife a long and happy wedded life! ADKERSON - SWING (16 Oct 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): A very pretty wedding was solemnized Sunday afternoon, Oct. 12, 1924, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Swing of Merritt community when their eldest daughter Miss Macie, became the bride of Mr. Dudley Adkerson, Judge Jones of Elk City performing the ceremony. The room was very beautifully decorated with ribbons and abundance of beautiful flowers. The bride wore a very pretty dress of blue canton crepe and carried a lovely boquet (sic) of carnations. This wedding came as a surprise to most everyone, nothwithstanding the fact there were about twenty-five or thirty of their relatives and friends gathered to witness the ceremony, after which the congratulations were offered and the guests then filed into the dining room where a bountiful dinner (for which Mrs. Swing is family for arranging) was spread and which everyone enjoyed. The bride is a very loveable christian girl with charming manners and Mr. Adkerson is to be congratulated on winning her for his life companion. Mr. Adkerson is also well and favorably known in this community having lived here for several and years and has proven himself to be a very energetic young man. Mr. and Mrs. Adkerson will make their home on the farm where Mr. Adkerson has been farming this year. May their pathway be strewn with joy, happiness, peace and love. FELDER - HEWETT (6 Nov 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Edgar Felder and Miss Esta Hewett were married Sunday evening, November 2nd at the home of and by Judge R. W. Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Woody Clay (cousins of groom) of Shamrock, Texas, were witnesses. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Hewett, late of Quinton, Okla., and is a very charming young lady. The Hewett's moved here recently for the benefit of the health of Mrs. Hewett and it looks to us as if fate had something to do with it, too, for they moved near the home of J. B. Felder, seven miles east of Carter, where Edgar, when visiting his parents, met the young lady in the home and cupid immediately pierced both their hearts, and it ended by "two hearts that beat as one." Mrs. Felder is a member of the Baptist Church. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Felder, who have lived some time near Carter. He is at present proprietor of the Felder barber shop on South Main. He is a splendid young man with many friends. The best wishes of the News Democrat and many friends are extended to the happy young couple. STEWART - EARL (6 Nov 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Miss Ethel Earl and Mr. S. J. Stewart were married at the home of the bride's brother, C. B. Earl, on last Saturday at 6:30 p.m., Rev. R. B. Gaddis of the First M. E. Church officiating. Besides the mother, brother and wife, there were present Mrs. Neil and Mr. and Mrs. Gaddis and children. After the ceremony and congratulations a lovely wedding supper was served. The bride came here recently from St. Louis where she had been the past year, but before this she was a chiropractor doctor in Sayre. She is a member of the First M. E. Church of this city, and is a splendid young woman, with a gracious personality. Mr. Stewart was in the real estate in Elk City for some time and owns several fine farms near Sweetwater where he and his bride will make their home. HARPER - LOWERY (6 Nov 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): YOUNG COUPLE MARRIED SINCE FIRST OF JUNE Miss Ethel Lowery and Carl Harper surprised their friends the first of this week when they made the announcement that they had been married since the first of June. On that day they went to Wheeler, Texas, where a license was issued by R. H. Forrester to (Carl) Elton Harper and Ethel Lowery. They went to the home of Rev. A. C. Wood and were married, returning to Elk City and their respective homes. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Lowery, and is a graduate of the Elk City High School, later attending the A & M College. She has been in the office of Dr. Shadid for some time. She is from a splendid family, is a lady of high attainments, and charming personality and we congratulate Carl in the selection he made in his life's companion. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Harper and has been employed for several years in the express office of this city. He is hard working young man, ever looking after the interest of the Company for whom he worked, and is also an exemplary young man in habits. The happy young couple have commenced keeping house in the McBee property on North Washington, formerly known as the Ruskin Shaw place. The best wishes of their many friends are extended for a long, happy and prosperous wedded life and in these the News Democrat most assuredly join. PARKS - POPE (6 Nov 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MILTON PARKS MARRIED Announcements have been received of the marriage of Milton Parks of Holdenville, Okla., and Miss Grace May Pope, of Greenville, Texas, the wedding taking place at Paul's Valley on October 26th. Milton is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Parks of this city and is a splendid young man, held in the very highest respect of all who know him, and all his friends here will be interested in learning of his marriage and through the News Democrat broadcast their congratulations to him. COWHERD - DYE (4 Dec 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Miss Lolita B. Dye and Mr. Earl C. Cowherd were married at the home of their pastor, Rev. J. W. Newman, on 520 West Sixth street, Elk City on Thanksgiving, November 27th, 1924. Those witnessing the ceremony were Mrs. R. S. Dye, Miss Agnes Dye, mother and sister of the bride, W. C. Cowherd and son Virgil, father and brother of the groom. The bride was dressed in brown canton crepe, brown coat and hat. Our Pixlee correspondent in writing of the wedding said. "It is with regret we lose Miss Loleta (sic) from our community as she is held in high esteem by all, but the two have the well wishes of their many friends here. After the wedding ceremony a Thanksgiving as well as a wedding feast was served at the R. S. Dye home to the following: Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cowherd, R. S. Dye and family, E. M. Dye and family, Carl Briscoe and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cowherd, Mr. and Mrs. Vincil Cowherd, and Messrs. Wm. and Virgil Cowherd. The house was decorated in orange and white and the color scheme was carried throughout the dinner. Thursday evening an old time Charivari was given at R. S. Dye home by the bride and groom's friends. During the evening several musical numbers were enjoyed, interesting games were played, and "treats" of cigars and candies were served. The guests left at a late hour wishing the bride and groom many happy and prosperous years. A "kitchen shower" of many gifts was given them Saturday night at Wm. Cowherd home. BELL - WILSON (9 Dec 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): Negroes Marry Monday evening Walter Bell and Miss Millie M. Wilson, two negroes, were united in marriage at the office of Joe Pyle, Rev. J. F. Graham of the Methodist church officiating. W. O. Moore acted as best man and C. S. Borin gave the bride away. This is the first marriage of negroes to take place in Erick. J. A. Richardson was also present at the marriage and tried to tell us how lovely the bride looked and what a handsome man the groom was. PIPKIN - ASHLEY (23 Dec 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): MARRIED The many friends of Miss Bonnie Ashley will no doubt be surprised to learn that she was married to Mr. Harvey Pipkin of Los Angeles, California, on December 15, 1924, at 7 o'clock P.M. at the home of and by Rev. Martin, 1751 North Vine Street, Hollywood, California. They were accompanied by Miss Bernice Pipkin, Mr. Jay Cavender and Faye Pipkin, who witnessed the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Ashley and is well known here having spent the most of her life in and near Elk City. She was employed as stenographer at the Gilkerson and O'Neal office during the summer months and a short time before her marriage was working for Judge Linville of this city. She is a very charming young lady and her many friends here will be sorry to hear she is making her home so far away. Mr. Pipkin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Pipkin of Sayre but for the past four years has been making his home in California where he has been engaged in the drug business. While we do not know very much about him we feel sure he must be a very industrious young man and worthy of his fair bride. They will make their home in California. Their many friends wish them a long and prosperous wedded life in which the Elk City News Democrat wishes to join. BONNER - HAWKINS (30 Dec 1924, Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, OK): J. M. Bonner and Miss Mittie Hawkins are among the couples who have wedded during the holidays. "Johnny Mac" as he is called, was with Herring & Young for a number of years and last year was secretary of the D.C.D. Highway. The bride is a sister of Mike Hawkins and is well known here.
