(27 Mar 1924, Sayre Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, OK): GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY One of the prettiest social affairs of the season was the reception given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Martin, on Monday afternoon from two-thirty until five-thirty and from seven-thirty until ten in celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Receiving with Mr. and Mrs. Martin were their children, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Martin of Mayfield; Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Martin of Sayre; Mr. and Mrs. Van Meter of Abdigon, Ill.; a sister of Mrs. Martin; S. E. Russell of Foss and H. A. Russell of Sayre, brothers of Mrs. Martin and H. K. Martin of Macomb, Ill, a brother of Mr. Martin. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were guests of honor at a dinner given by their relatives at the basement of the Christian church at noon at which about forty-five guests were present. During the receiving hours more than one hundred twenty-five guests called to extend congratulations upon the celebration of the happy occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Martin are among the pioneer settlers of Beckham county having come to Sayre sixteen years ago, from West Liberty, Iowa. Mr. Martin was engaged in the drug business here for a number of years and after disposing of his drug business, he served two terms as court clerk of Beckham county. He and Mrs. Martin are active members of the Christian church and are always to be found identified with any movement for the better of the community. Two sons, Gail, who lives in Schiller Park, Ill, and Clyde, a resident of Davenport, Iowa, were unable to be present as were the daughter and little granddaughter, Mrs. F. E. Chappell and Margaret and Mrs. Everett Hartpence and children, grand children and great grand children of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Their popularity with their friends was attested by the large number of letters and telegrams received yesterday and the numerous floral offerings conveying a golden message of good wishes for many happy returns of the anniversary. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
