Smith assured inquiring friends Thursday June 5 as she and Mr. Smith posed for a picture on their Diamond wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were married in Keosanque, Iowa on June 5, 1870. The early part of their married life was spent in Iowa and in the neighboring states. Thirty years ago they moved with their family of three children to Beckham county. They settled at Murphy's Gin where they lived until 6 years ago when they moved to Sayre. "Since moving to Beckham county the children have married," Mrs. Smith said. "Fred lives in Erick, one of my daughters married Charles Parish and lives in Colorado and the other daughter lives in Sayre. She is Mrs. Jim Lowry. They all remembered our wedding anniversary and helped to make it that much more pleasant for us." Mr. and Mrs. Smith live on south 5th street. Mrs. Smith loves to work with her flowers and Mr. Smith is a real fisherman. On a recent fishing trip Mr. Smith boasts that he made the catch of his life but that it fell back in the river. The couple are both members of the Methodist church in Sayre and when able are always in their places in the church on Sunday morning. They are members of the Bible Class of that church. Early Thursday morning guests began to arrive, Mrs. Smith could not recall the occasion until prompted by Mr. Smith. "I had about decided that I would forget my anniversary like I do my birthday, they come around too often," Mrs. Smith stated," Before the day was over I was mighty glad that the anniversary had not been forgotten by others." The couple entertained guests all day Thursday and were special guests at a Kiwanis program in the evening. The Bible class of the Methodist church presented them with a water set and Mrs. T. N. Weeks and Mrs. Jube Thurmond baked the brides cake for the occasion. Friends and relatives presented the couple with many lovely gifts and flowers. Cards of congratulations and telephone messages of cheer were received by the pair. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are both 83 years of age. Mrs. Smith being the older by 6 months. They are as active as can be.
