MARRIAGE CLIPPINGS - 1919: (The Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 2 Jan 1919): CHRISTMAS WEDDINGS Several Sayre Young People Married Last Week. Elwood Fanning and Miss Sylvia Sides were married Christmas morning by Rev. G. W. Nichols, at his residence in the northern part of this city. A double wedding was solemnized at the home of Rev. Moore, of the Methodist Church, on Christmas eve, when John Latta and Miss Marie Wilson, and Delbert Wilson and Miss Lottie Boynton, all of this city, were married. (The Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 30 Jan 1919): Travis Alexander and Miss Freda Barnes were united in marriage by Rev. Tom Steele at the courthouse last Thursday afternoon. Hale and many friends of the bride and groom witnessed a quiet wedding last night, Wednesday, 8:30 o'clock at the home of Justice R. W. Jones, when Miss Ruby Brannon and Chester Vinson were married. Miss Brannon's father has recently purchased the Broadway Grocery, where Mr. Vinson has been working. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 6 Feb 1919): BAUCHMAN - HAWKINS At 9:30 last Tuesday night there came to the home of Justice Jones a merry wedding party of many young people to witness the marriage of Miss Lena May Bauchman and J. S. Hawkins. Miss Bauchman's father is a leading farmer and good citizen who lives seven and a half miles northwest of Elk City. The young couple will make Elk City their future home. (The Sayre Headlight, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 13 Feb 1919): J. L. Basham and Mrs. Myrtle Bach were married on Thursday night last, at a home on Fourth street which Mr. Basham has all furnished and ready for housekeeping. The ceremony was performed by Judge McComas. Both the contracting parties are well known in Sayre and vicinity, and a large circle of personal friends will join with the Headlight in extending best wishes for their success and happiness. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 13 Feb 1919): BROWN - WYMER Judge Jones married another couple Tuesday. This time it was a happy couple from Carpenter. Miss Jewel D. Brown, the bride, is the handsome daughter of T. E. Brown and wife of Carpenter. The groom, George A. Wymer, is the son of Fred Wymer, also a well known citizen of Carpenter; all of whom are well known to people of Elk City. Miss Lorene Wymer and John Gatton of Carpenter witnessed the ceremony. The happy couple left on the afternoon train for Oklahoma City and a honeymoon trip. (The Carter Express, Carter, Beckham Co, Ok, 14 Feb 1919): MARRIED. Welton Poarch and Miss Stella Broddrick, both residing out north of Carter, were married on Tuesday night of this week. The groom is the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Poarch, while the bride is the daughter of Mr. Will Broddrick, both families being classed among our very best people, and the young contracting parties have a host of friends throughout this part of the country who congratulate them on their happy union. Many friends witnessed the ceremony. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 13 Mar 1919): Miss Edna Wilson and Jas. Younger were married by Rev. Steele at Sayre Saturday, Feb. 15. They have the best wishes of the community for a long, happy life. They will make their home among us, living on the Younger farm. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 13 Mar 1919, Port News): Mr. Ovie Leonard and Miss Hattie Smith slipped off to Cordell last Wednesday and were married. It was a complete surprise to all their friends, who wish them much happiness. Thursday evening the newly - weds were charivaried by their many friends. Most of the young people of the community took part in the serenade. After a very pleasant evening, and refreshments and congratulations for the bride and groom, the visiting members of the party separated noisily for their respective homes. Jones, April 2, 1919, at the residence of the groom's brother-in-law, Erb Smith, on East 7th street. Many friends were present. The groom is a son of Mrs. Hutton, who lives southwest of the city. The bride is a daughter of T. J. Jackson, a well to do farmer, who lives south of Canute. Mr. Hutton will farm his mother's place this year. Jones at his residence on 7th St. The groom is a son of A. F. Glazner of this city, and is an employee of the W. F. & N. W. Ry. The bride has no relatives here, but comes well recommended, and of a well to do family. They will make their home at Wichita Falls. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 17 Apr 1919): VAN VACTER - BLAIR Ivan Blair and Miss Zillah Van Vacter were united in matrimony in the home of the bride, northwest of town, Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock by Rev. C. Bowles. This being a quiet affair, there were only a few present. The young people left on the afternoon train for Weatherford, where Mrs. Blair will attend school. Both are well known here. The bride is the daughter of J. V. Rowe, southwest of town. The groom has recently returned from France, and has accepted his former position with the W. F. & N. W. Ry. Co. Darendinger of Sayre and Miss Clara Perry of Doxey were united in matrimony at the Church of God at 4:00 o'clock on the afternoon of Easter Sunday, Rev. Moad of Clinton officiating. The church was decorated with flowers - lavendar and white the predominating colors. The bride was attired in a dress of tan crepe de chine and georgette. The groom, who recently returned from training camp, was attired in his uniform. The ceremony was witnessed by a large audience of relatives and friends. Lauderdale and Miss Crissie De Chane were united in matrimony April 28th, at 12 o'clock by Rev. W. A. Posey at the Presbyterian manse. The bride is a charming young lady of Sayre. The groom, better known as "Slivers," had been a resident of this city for several years until the past few months when he accepted a position at Burkburnett. Immediately after the ceremony, the young couple left for their home at Burkburnett. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 1 May 1919): CURTIS - PHELPS Edward Curtis and Miss Elizabeth Phelps were united in matrimony Sunday afternoon at the residence of J. B. Winn, Rev. R. R. Coffey officiating. The bride, better known as Bessie, is teaching school at Pixlee. Her parents reside at Foss. The groom is a son of W. K. Phelps, and has been a resident of this vicinity for several years. He was in the service and recently returned home. The young couple will make their future home at Pixlee. Bradshaw and Miss Susie Grace Vinson, both of Elk City, were united in matrimony at the Vinson home at 8:00 o'clock, Wednesday, May 7th, Justice R. W. Jones officiating. An elaborate wedding supper was served. The groom has a position with the Rock Island, and the young couple will make their home here. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 8 May 1919): CLARK - BURWELL Harry R. Burwell and Miss Veda Clark were united in matrimony Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the Baptist church, Rev. C. Bowles officiating. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bub Clark of near Merritt. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Burwell, also of near Merritt. The church was not large enough to accommodate the host of relatives and friends who went to witness the ceremony. Miss Edith Duke of Tula, Texas, sang a beautiful solo, "I Love You Truly" with Miss Iris Standifer as accompanist. The wedding march was played by Miss Standifer, pianist, and Miss Duke, violinist. Minnia Mansur was best man and Miss Burwell, sister of the groom, maid of honor. The bride wore a white satin and georgette gown and white carnations. Miss Duke wore a beaded white georgette gown and pink carnations. Miss Burwell wore grey crepe de chine and georgette. Immediately after the ceremony the young couple went to the residence of Rev. Bowles where they received many beautiful wedding gifts and congratulations from relatives and friends, and also had their pictures taken. Many of their friends arrived too late for the ceremony, but went to the residence of Rev. Bowles to extend congratulations. The young couple will make their future home near Merritt. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 22 May 1919): LEDBETTER - HEFNER Willie Hefner and Mrs. Mattie Ledbetter were married at Sayre, Friday May 16. The bride is well known here, having been employed at the New York Store for several years. The groom has been in New Mexico the past two years and was called here recently on account of the illness of Miss Lottie Hefner. The happy couple will make their home in New Mexico. The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Lula McArthur, and is a cultured and accomplished young lady. She has been teaching at Delhi. The groom was principal of the Delhi school, is a Baptist minister and a man of worth. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 29 May 1919): ALENDER - BURWELL Ivy Burwell and Miss Cecil Allender (sic), both of Doxey, were married at the home of Judge R. W. Jones at 6 o'clock Sunday evening. The groom's parents Claude Robinson and family and several young friends were present. The bride was one of the Elk City High School graduates this year, and has many friends here. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 12 Jun 1919): PURVIS - MIDDLETON Chesley Middleton of Elk City and Miss Lydia Purvis of Melrose, New Mexico, were married Thursday morning, June 5, at the home of the bride. The groom is well known here, having been employed at the Elk City post office for some time, and also an employee of the Elk City Steam Laundry. He is taking his vacation and went to New Mexico on Monday, June 2. He returned Saturday accompanied by his bride and also her brother, Edward Purvis. On Sunday a big dinner was given by his mother, Mrs. M. J. Middleton, at her residence with about thirty relatives present. The young couple moved into their residence about three blocks north of the High School Monday. The groom will resume his work at the post office the first of next week. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 12 Jun 1919): TRENT - WILLIAMS George Williams and Miss Nora Trent, both of near Hammon, were united in marriage Sunday morning, June 8, at 3 o'clock in their car on the Custer county line northeast of town, by Justice Tom Russell. Canavan of Sayre and Miss Arvie Kinney of Yale were united in marriage Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of the groom's sister, Mrs. Belle Cadle, Rev. Bowles officiating. Immediately after the ceremony the couple started for Texas in their car. They will return Saturday to the home of the groom at Sayre. Both parties are former residents of this city and have many friends here. He was up to Emmett Scannell's home last Friday, 5 p.m., where he tied in wedlock the happy couple who will soon spend their honeymoon in Colorado. Jones) married J. C. Johnson and Maud Miller, both of Mayfield, at the Elk hotel last Saturday evening. Mr. Johnson will accept a position as chef at the Pullman Cafe. He has been for a number of years second cook for Harvey houses in various parts of the country, and formerly lived in Erick. Two car loads of relatives and friends were present. The groom is a soldier boy who has recently returned from France. Immediately after the ceremony the happy couple left for Little Rock where they will make their home. Mosburg of Weatherford, who recently returned from France, and Miss Clara A. Hickman of Elk City were united in marriage by Justice R. W. Jones at his residence Monday afternoon, July 7, at 4 o'clock. The young couple left for their home at Weatherford immediately after the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of the postmaster at Forgan, and the groom is a former resident of this city. The groom is a druggist at Carter, and has recently been in the service of the country. The bride is a beautiful and accomplished young lady, and has many friends in this city, having lived here until a few years ago, when she moved to Mangum with her parents. She has been attending school in Oklahoma City. After the ceremony the happy couple came to Elk City where they were met by relatives and a host of friends. Skillman of Amarillo, Texas, and Miss Ina Jester of this city were united in marriage at the Southern Methodist parsonage by Rev. J. W. Trevette. The bride is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Jester, and has lived in Elk City for a number of years. For the past three years she has been a teacher in the Beckham county rural schools. Her charming manner and pleasing personality have won for her a host of friends. The groom is a traveling salesman for a wholesale drug company, and is a young man of splendid character. He is to be congratulated upon his choice of a life companion. They left shortly after their marriage for their new home in Amarillo. The bride is the charming daughter of Mrs. George Hankins. The happy couple will make their home at Waynette, Okla. Mrs. Guy Carter went to Oklahoma City Sunday to attend the wedding of her sister, Miss Verna Dalton. She returned Tuesday. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 21 Aug 1919): BRUNSON - HOUGLAND Ira G. Hougland of Republic, Wash., and Miss Clara Alsie Brunson of Elk City were married by Rev. R. R. Coffey at the home of the bride's parents Sunday afternoon, August 17, at 1 o'clock. Those present were the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Brunson, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. McGrady and baby of Mangum, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McGrady and the groom's sister, Mrs. McDonald and her daughter. The bride has many friends who regret to lose her from our city. The happy couple went to Mangum shortly after the ceremony to visit at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. D. C. McGrady. They returned Monday night and started for Washington Tuesday night. They will visit in Denver and Salt Lake City on their way. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 21 Aug 1919): WEDDING BELLS. A pretty wedding was witnessed at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Pinkerton east of town, Monday evening, August 18 at 6:30 o'clock. The bride, Miss Ruth, is a charming young lady, and was beautifully dressed in a wedding gown of White geargette (sic) crepe. She was one of the graduates of the High School the past year. The groom, Ray Coleman, is one of our soldier boys, who recently returned from France. Rev. R. R. Coffey spoke the words that made them one, in the presence of the parents of both the bride and the groom, and Misses Daisy Nischwitz and Wilma Pasco and Mrs. R. R. Coffey. This was the twenty-second anniversary of the marriage of the bride's parents. An elaborate wedding dinner was served. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 28 Aug 1919): WALKER - RUFF Mrs. J. H. Parks entertained at dinner Saturday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Ruff of Oklahoma City, who were recently married and were on their way to Leedey to visit Mrs. Ruff's uncle, Dr. G. T. Walker, who formerly lived here, and Miss Walker received most of her education in our schools. When war was declared Miss Walker went to Seattle, Wash., where she enlisted in the ship yard and did clerical work until the armistice was signed. Then she received her honorable discharge and returned to her home. Mr. Ruff was formerly a banker of Leedey, until he moved to Oklahoma City and engaged in the oil business. He is now secretary-treasurer of the North American Oil Refinery Corporation of Oklahoma. They will reside in Oklahoma City, where they have a nice home. Hall of Eldorado, Okla., and Miss Lella Hutchinson (sic) of this city were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. W. Trevette of the M. E. church South. Mr. and Mrs. Hall left Tuesday morning for Eldorado where they will make their home. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 2 Oct 1919): JUDGE JONES TIES UP TWO COUPLES. Last Wednesday week Sept. 17, Ike Long of Wichita Falls and Miss Agnes Miller, daughter of a big ranch man of near Elk City, hunted up the Judge and he tied the knot at 10:30. Ike is one of the printing fraternity and holds a "sit" in Wichita Falls where they will make their home. Goldie Earl Howard and Miss Kate Massey of Leedey were married by the Judge at the home of A. T. Sullivan in this city last Monday afternoon at 2:30. The bride and groom are both old friends of the Sullivans. Mr. Howard is 28 and Miss Massey is 22 years of age. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 9 Oct 1919): REA - STIRMAN A big family wedding was held at the home of the bride's parents, near Berlin, last Sunday, 12:30 p.m., Oct. 5, 1919, Justice Jones officiating. Miss Bessie Rea, the bride, was looking her best, and E. C. Stirman, a former broom corn buyer and now with the Western Oil Co. of Wichita Falls, with a host of their friends and relatives, enjoyed one of the best turkey dinners ever prepared by the bride's mother. The Judge says it was the best he ever participated in. Miss Rea has recently been in the employ of the Diamond "C" as saleslady, and has many acquaintances and friends here. Dye, both of Beckham county, were married by Justice Jones last Saturday afternoon at four-thirty, Oct. 4, 1919. Breaden, both of Canute, were married here by Justice Jones last Saturday, Oct. 4, 1919, ten-thirty p.m. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 16 Oct 1919): HERNE NOE RETURNS WITH A BRIDE. Mr. Herne Noe is a newly wed. He, with his charming wife, dropped in on old friends in this city Tuesday. They were on the last lap of a two weeks honeymoon and were returning to Burkburnett where they will make their home. Mr. Noe is interested in oil operations here. They were entertained at the Story hotel Tuesday to a seven o'clock dinner by Shelby Schooler. The eight-course dinner was served to the following guests: Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Dobry, Robert Levi, the Misses Florence Cook and Gail Thurmond, Mr. Schooler and Mr. and Mrs. Noe. Paul Hedlund took the party to the home of Miss Thurmond after the dinner, where they enjoyed the evening. While Mr. and Mrs. Noe were absent from their rooms, some of the party displaced nearly every article they had. The bed was on one side, the table was upside down, curtains and shades were removed from the windows and their trunks and traveling bags had been opened and the contents thrown about the rooms. Mr. Noe was about to whip the night clerk, Mr. Banks, when he asked for an explanation of the condition of his rooms. He soon saw the joke and showed ability as a husbandman by arranging the room and replacing the window shades - while the jokesters watched from without. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 16 Oct 1919): LYDELL -WEATHERLY Justice Jones had early callers at his home last Sunday when Mr. Oscar L. Weatherly and Miss Ruth Lydell, with friends, arrived at nine-thirty to have a matrimonial knot tied. Both parties are residents of Elk City vicinity. The bride's home being one mile west of town, while the groom lived southeast. Here's to a long life and a happy one, and may all their troubles be little ones. They went to Oklahoma City and Norman to visit friends that night, returning today. Both report a great time. They will make their home at Omaha, Neb. Mrs. Sanders is staying with her mother now while Mr. Sanders is attending to business in the North. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 6 Nov 1919): CUSTER - MASSEY Carroll C. Massey and Julia Grace Custer, two of Elk city's prominent younger set, were happily married at the bride's home by Rev. C. Bowles last Saturday night at eleven o'clock. Announcements are out to a hundred of their friends, whom they are now at home to in this city. The wedding was a quiet affair, and only immediate members of the family in attendance, and Louis Ross, Miss Huffman and Una Jester, the bride's aunt, Mrs. Rone of Missouri, who is spending the winter with the Custers. The bride and groom drove to Clinton, after the big wedding dinner was served at 12 midnight, to take the train for Oklahoma City, where they were the guests of J. O. Lilly. On their return from the city Monday night, a dozen couples of their close friends had a big surprise awaiting them in their new home. The friends had brought many good things to eat, and after an hour of jolly good time, the newly weds were bade good night. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 11 Dec 1919): ECHOLS - ROE A surprise was in store for everyone when Russell Roe returned Monday morning from Oklahoma City, bringing his bride with him. He and Miss Ida Echols were married at the Echols home in Oklahoma City December 7, Rev. Barrett, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating. Only a few friends and relatives were present. Russell is the youngest son of Mrs. Margaret Roe, and for some time has been with the Dixie Store. He is in the shoe department and attends to the decorating. The bride is the oldest daughter of R. E. Echols, formerly of this city, but now of Oklahoma City. She spent her school days here and is a very accomplished young lady. They will make their home in Elk City. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 11 Dec 1919): HOLOMAN - NANCE Hoyt Nance and Miss Anna Mae Holloman were married December 5th at the home of W. H. Isom southwest of the city, Judge R. W. Jones officiating. The groom is a successful farmer of the Belleview district and is an upright young man. Mrs. Nance is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Holloman of near Belleview and has been attending the Elk City High School. She was one of the Seniors, and will be greatly missed. They have many friends who join with us in wishing them much joy and success in the future. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 18 Dec 1919): HULIN - HUDDLESTON Sunday, Dec. 12, at the home of Rev. C. Bowles, Herman Huddleston and Miss Mamie Hulin were united in marriage, Rev. Bowles officiating. The guests were Mrs. Grace Vandagriff, Misses Verlie Messemore, Clara Hulin and Katie Brewer and Messrs. Paul and Elbert McClendon. The young couple will make Elk City their home. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 18 Dec 1919): WALKER - MOORE Last Thursday evening at 8 o'clock a quiet wedding took place at the home of P. C. Rader on West Broadway, when Howard Moore and Miss Altus Walker were united in marriage. Rev. C. Bowles officiated. The only witnesses were Mrs. P. C. Rader and her daughter, Miss Olive. The groom is a fine young man, and there is a great future for him. Mrs. Moore has had a position with Herring & Young for some time and has made many friends who wish her a long and happy married life. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 25 Dec 1919): WOODMAN - TYLER Tuesday evening at 7:30 Miss Mary Woodman and Mr. Henry H. Tyler were married at the home of the bride's parents by Rev. W. A. Posey. The bride wore a lovely georgette toque, beautifully trimmed in beads, and a corsage boquet (sic) of white roses. They were a very handsome couple, a brunette and a blond. The beautiful bungalow home was well lighted and appropriately decorated. Mr. and Mrs. Jodie Crabtree attended the bride and groom. A sister of the groom, Mrs. C. C. Cabiness, of Wichita Falls, sang "O, Promise Me," and Miss Una Jester played Mendelssohn's Wedding March. Only a few friends and near relatives were present. After the ceremony a lovely buffet luncheon was served. Mr. Tyler is the son of Mrs. W. H. Winn, and is one of Elk City's fine young business men. He was in service for 22 months as a volunteer, and was in Europe a year. Miss Woodman is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Woodman and has spent most of her life here. She is one of the most popular and most charming young ladies of this city, and will make a lovely companion and helpmate. Mr. Tyler had already prepared a fine home for the bride where they will spend their honeymoon. Their many friends extend hearties congratulations. C. Bowles. A number of friends and relatives witnessed the ceremony. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 2 Jan 1920): FOUNTAIN - MIDYETT Lonnie Midyett and Miss Vona Fountain, both of Elk City, were married December 27, 1919, at the home of R. W. Jones, the Judge officiating. They will make their home here. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 2 Jan 1920): JOHNSON - JONES Mr. R. C. Jones, who quietly left this city the Saturday before Christmas, for Minneapolis, Minn., to spend the holidays with friends, returned last Monday with a handsome bride, surprising many of his near friends and his parents. He told no person of his intentions, but his father had suspicions and told us so last week. The bride is the daughter of P. Jackson, who is the manager of a large granite quarry at Cold Springs, Okla. Mr. Jones met Miss Johnson last summer while there purchasing a few car loads of granite. She was the guest of his sister and parents here last fall. Her old home is Minneapolis, where she has been the past winter. Miss Elizabeth A. Johnson and Mr. Rufus C. Jones were married on Tuesday of last week, 8 p.m., Dec. 13, at the North Methodist parsonage, Minneapolis, by the pastor. Mr. Jones has arranged for a home on West Third, and at present is living with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Jones. The writer extends congratulations, with the many friends of the happy young couple. May this year and those to follow be full of prosperity, health and happiness. (The Southwest Press, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 2 Jan 1920): KNIGHT - ALLDREDGE One Christmas wedding that was a surprise to many young people of this city was that of E. O. Alldredge, one of our leading grocerymen, and Miss Louie Knight, who formerly lived here and recently moved to Chickasha with her parents Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Knight. Mr. Alldredge went after his bride the day before Xmas, and they were married at the home of the bride, returning to this place last Saturday. (The Sayre Democrat, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 1 Apr 1920): Bud Lewis and Miss Nell Rogers have disclosed a secret that they have been keeping since last December, namely the fact that they were married in Mangum on the 7th day of December, 1919. Miss Rogers is a teacher in the schools here and has a number of friends, being one of the most popular young ladies of the younger set. Bud, of course, is well known here and has a number of friends, is an admirable young man and is well liked.
