(The Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham, Ok, 18 Dec 1907) THURMOND - SKELTON I. C. Thurmond, cashier of the First National Bank at this place, was married to Mrs. F. M. Skelton of Newton, Kansas, on Tuesday, December 10. Clarence, as he is familiarly known here, is one of the "Thurmond boys" who with their father E. G. Thurmond, established a small grocery store in a dug out at Cheyenne, at the early times of that town. Now the Thurmond Brothers are owners or part owners of eleven banks in this part of Oklahoma and other points. The Record is glad to see one of the most successful and farseeing young men of the state take this wise step toward greater felicity in life. (The Elk City Record, Elk City, Beckham, Ok, 18 Dec 1907) THE BOYS GOT LEFT. Saturday, the boys got the information that I. C. Thurmond would bring his bride home on the evening train. And somehow I. C. found out that the boys were prepared to escort him home in a rig he did not desire to ride in. He therefore left the train at the water tank about three miles east of town where he found an automobile waiting to convey him and his bride home. The auto got to town about the same time the train did and I. C. not wishing to disappoint the boys, phoned them that he was at home and that he would take great pleasure in introducing them to the bride. The boys - well the boys felt a little disappointed, notwithstanding the kind invitations. (The Elk City Democrat, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 26 Dec 1907) A few years ago, when I. C. Thurmond, of the First National Bank of Elk city, was a little boy, he lived in Mobeta, Texas, which was the big business town of the Great Panhandle of Texas. He, like many other boys, had a sweetheart at school. Old times tell as that the love that those children had for each other was even talked about by the grown up people and often spoke of to this date. Fate separated them, I. C. moved to Cheyenne, Okla with his parents. Years rolled by; I. C. grew to manhood and entered into the banking business, which he has followed ever since. It seems that his childhood love never died; and the guiding Spirit of Destiny brought them again together, then the simple love of childhood ripened into the matured love of the race. On the third of this month, Mrs. Shelton accompanied by Mrs. Florence Ganaway, a sister to I. C. Thurmond, met Mr. Thurmond at Newton, Kansas, where they were quietly married. Mr. Thurmond has brought his bride home to Elk City, and they are now temporarily residing at the parental home, until Mr. Thurmond can erect a home of his own. A wire reached here that they would be home Dec 14. The boys, headed by Joe Queenan, met the train expecting to give the couple a hot time; but, I. C. fooled them all. The boys met the train but the couple did not show up, so they concluded that the expected ones had missed the train. I. C. had in a quiet way ordered his auto to meet the train at Canute where the couple left the train and landed home before the boys knew they were in town. But as soon as they arrived the boys were rang up over the phone, and all were soon at the Thurmond house. But I.C. and bride were ready for them; the banquet hall was thrown open and a jolly good cheer to all. Hundreds of friends wish them happiness through life. Hughes surprised his friends by running over to Amarillo, Texas, last week and returning, bringing with him a blushing bride. Of course Mr. Hughes has reached that age where a written consent was not necessary to procure a license, yet we think he should have advised his most intimate friends at least when he had in mind such an important step in life, yet we wish for him and his bride a most happy married life. He has been making frequent trips out of town of late supposedly on business, but now all can understand the cause of his frequent absence. Cupid tricks are sometimes hard to comprehend.
