The records of the county judge's office discloses a land office business in marriage licenses issued during the past twelve months. Twelve hundred and four licenses (sic) were issued, an average of about one license for every day and a half throughout the year. December seems to have been the banner month with a record of thirty-eight while February reached the low mark of ten. Fifty-two of the brides gave their residence at Elk City; 42 at Erick; Sayre, 24; Prentiss, 12; Doxey, 11; Carter, 11; Delhi, 8; Texola, 5; Poarch, 2; and Emma, 2. Forty were from outside the county. The fact that fifty-four of the applicants were under age and therefore had to have their parents' consent, indicates that hasty marriages with repentance at leisure is the order of the day in Beckham county as well as elsewhere. --------------------------------------------------------- Return to Beckham County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/beckham/beckham.htm
