MARRIAGE CLIPPINGS - 1923

(The Beckham County Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, Ok, 24 Jan 1923)
Bowen - Smith
At a quiet Sunday wedding attended by only the immediate relatives of the
couple, George F. Bowen of this city, and Mrs. Elva Smith were united in
marriage by Rev. H. E. Stubbs of the Christian church, the ceremony being
performed at the home of the groom's sister, Mrs. Nels Christensen, at
three o'clock last Sunday afternoon.
The bride is leaving her recently acquired position as matron of the San
Joaquin hospital, and the couple will make their home on South H. Street. 
Mr. Bowen is well and favorably known in this city, having lived here for
the past twelve years.  He is part owner of the local H. & H. Laundry, and
is a member of both the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs.  Mrs. Bowen is also a
Rebekah, and has many friends in this city who will wish the couple a
happy married life.  Tulare California newspaper.
Mrs. Elva Smith who was well known here and has many friends who join with
the Democrat in wishing them a happy life.
H. E. Stubbs, who performed the ceremony, is also an old Erickite and is
better known here as "Pat."

From Canadian Record: Miss Bessie Brannon and Mr. Emmit Counts, were
married during the holidays, Miss Brannon is one of Durham's High school
teachers, and Mr. Counts is from Canute, Oklahoma.  We wish this young
couple much success and happiness.

John Penn and Miss Maud Bales were quietly married Saturday evening by
Rev. Sebe Thomas.

MARRIED.  Roy Hill and Miss Stella Flowers, daughter of Mr. Sam Flowers,
were united in the bonds of matrimony, Friday night.  The ceremony was
performed at the home of Rev. I. Q. McCorkle, the preacher tying the
nuptial knot.
Mr. And Mrs. Hill both grew up in this community and are among our finest
young people.  Their many friends offer congratulations and best wishes
for their future happiness and success.

Gilpert - Whorton
Knowell Vance Gilbert and Miss Bobbie Whorton of Texola, were united in
marriage here Tuesday morning.  The ceremony was performed at the home of
Rev. I. Q. McCorkle.

Adcox - Riley
Jim Clay Adcox and Miss Beatrice Riley, were united in marriage Tuesday
night, Rev. A. A. Miller performing the ceremony that bound these two
young people as one.
The above young people are well known in Erick and vicinity, they having
lived here practically all their lives, and have won the confidence and
respect of all our people, who join with the Democrat in wishing them
health, happiness and wealth as they journey through life.

Bryant  - Davis.
Saturday evening at 7:30 o'clock the wedding bells toiled the hour of a
quiet ceremony which united Marian H. Bryant and Miss Florence Davis in
matrimony.
Mr. And Mrs. J. E. Stewart witnessed the ceremony, which was said by Rev.
J. F. Graham, at the home of Mrs. E. T. Davis.

Armstrong - Armistead
Paul G. Armstrong, one of Erick's best known and a very popular young man,
was married Saturday, March 24 to Miss Essie Belle Armistead, one of our
most accomplished young ladies; the ceremony being performed by Rev. I. Q.
McCorkle at this home in Erick.

Heard - McGowen
Last Friday Arlie F. Heard and Miss Winona McGowen, were united in
marriage, the ceremony being performed by I. Q. McCorkle.
These young people have lived in and near Erick practically all their
lives and have a host of friends here.

Watson - Haynes
Chester M. Watson of Texola and Miss Edith Haynes of Shamrock, Texas, were
united in the bonds of matrimony last Friday.  The ceremony took place in
the office of Joe Pyle and it is said that Rev. McCorkle assisted Joe in
tieing (sic) the knot.
The Democrat extends congratulations to the above newly weds.

Married.  Last Wednesday evening Rev. Graham united in marriage Miss
Bertha Strickland and Sterling D. Martin.  The ceremony being performed at
the church, after the prayer meeting service.  Rev. Graham says if you
desire to get married attend the prayer meetings.

Barker - Garrett
Last Monday Captain Barker and Miss Irene Garrett were quietly united in
marriage, the ceremony being performed at Sayre, Oklahoma.
These young people are both well known here.  Mr. Barker is a mechanic of
unusual ability and is now employed by the Lewis Motor Co.
The Democrat join with their many friends in wishing them health, wealth
and happiness.

Guy R. Cooper and Miss Vera L. Smith, both of Electra, Texas, were united
in the holy bonds of wedlock, Sunday afternoon at the home of Rev. Arthur
A. Miller who performed the ceremony.  These young people have a number of
relatives and friends here who join with the Democrat in wishing them all
the joys of wedded life.

WINN - HESS
Last Saturday about 8 o'clock Rev. J. L. Haddock, was called upon to
perform the wedding ceremony of Sears W. Winn of Texola and Miss Bertha
Hess of Erick.
These young people have lived in this vicinity practically all of their
lives and have a large circle of friends who join with the Democrat in
wishing them all the joys of wedded life.

MC CARTY - GORDON
Mr. Jack McCarty and Miss Alaska Gordon were married by Rev. Graham last
Monday evening Aug. 27, 1923, at the Methodist Parsonage.
The Bride is the beautiful daughter of Mrs. Lucy Gordon.  Alaska is well
and favorably known here, having grown to young womanhood in our midst and
has clerked at the Dixie store for the past few years, Alaska is a
splendid Christian girl, of Methodist faith, a loving sweet disposition,
and her many friends love her dearly.
Mr. McCarty of Robinson, Okla., has been in our midst since June, employed
as a driller and comes to us well recommended from his home town.  He is a
nephew of Jim and John McCarty of our City.
The Democrat wish their many friends wish this splendid couple a happy and
prosperous married life.

Yarbrough - Green Wedding
The marriage of Miss Gladys Green to C. C. Yarbrough, of Port Arthur,
Texas, was solemnized Wednesday morning at ten o'clock at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. And Mrs. E. M. Green on North Fourth street.
The house was beautifully decorated in yellow chrysanthemums and white
roses, the improvised altar being a bank of chrysanthemums and ferns,
where the young couple stood while Rev. J. L. Haddock of  Erick read the
impressive ring service.
The bride, who entered with her father, was gowned in white satin, the
bodice being made with the short tight bodice of colonial style and the
skirt being a voluminous affair of satin and crepe.  Her tulle veil fell
from a bandeau of orange blossoms and she carried an arm bouquet of
Sweetheart roses.  Her only ornaments were a pair of ear rings which
adorned her grandmother's ears upon her wedding day.
Mrs. Yarbrough is the eldest daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Green and is a young
woman of a very winsome personality.  She graduated from the Erick High
School two years ago, and immediately entered the Oklahoma University at
Norman, where she specialized in expression and music.  Mr. Yarbrough
formerly lived at Erick and is a brother of the late Dr. Yarbrough of
Erick.  For the past two years he has made his home at Port Arthur, Texas,
where he is connected with the Gulf Oil & Refining Company.
After the ceremony an informal reception was held after which a three
course wedding breakfast was served to the bridal party.
Mrs. Yarbrough's going away gown was navy blue crepe satin, with
accessories to match.  The young couple left on the noon train for Port
Arthur, where they will make their future home.  A number of our of town
guests were present to witness the ceremony.

Stubbs; Mr. And Mrs. E. E. Wall, Mrs. M. E. Rutherford and Mrs. Guy
Russell of Sayre.

Strickland - Smith
M. G. Strickland and Miss Clara Mae Smith were united in marriage, Friday
Sept. 21, the ceremony being performed at Wheeler, Texas.
These young people kept the marriage a secret until last Saturday, when
their many friends learned of the fact, they made life unpleasant for the
newly weds for sometime.

Earl Bowers and Erath Willson and Henry Boatwright and Mollie Willson are
reported to have married some where in Texas last week but have not
returned yet.  The girls are cousins.

Prescott - Newton
Mr. Eugene Newton and Miss Olma Prescott motored to Wheeler, Texas, Sunday
where they were quietly married.
Both are well known in Erick, the bride being the pretty eldest daughter
of Mr. And Mrs. Frank Prescott, and has a host of friends and schoolmates
who love her.
Gene is the son of Mr. And Mrs. G. W. Newton, and is an native of Erick,
having graduated from Erick High School last spring.
He is an employee at E. L. Ray's Drug Store.
We extend heartiest congratulations, and best wishes for a long and
prosperous married life.

Double Wedding.
Saturday afternoon Bro. I. Q. McCorkle performed a double marriage
ceremony for Virgil Ragle and Miss Eula Breedlove, and Lonnie Gardner and
Miss Ethel Doak.
These young people are all well known in Erick, as all of them are
residents of our town, except Mr. Gardner who resides in Texola.
The Democrat extends best wishes to both young couples.

week, we gave Mrs. Virgil Ragle's name as Eula Breedlove; but she was Miss

Campbell - Baker
George S. Baker and Miss Birdie Campbell, both of this vicinity, were
quietly married at the Christian parsonage last Sunday afternoon.
Miss Campbell is the daughter of J. B. Campbell, one of our prosperous
farmers.  With their many friends, we extend heartiest congratulations.

Wilson - Smith
Miss Velma Wilson of Sweetwater, and Mr. Harvey Smith of Erick, were
married at the Baptist parsonage Sunday, Dec. 16th at 5 p.m., Rev. Bell
officiating.
The problem of what to give his girl for Christmas, has been worrying
Harvey Smith for a long time, so he finally decided to give her a new
name, and a wedding ring; however, he seems to have got impatient and
presented them to her last Sunday.
Mrs. Smith is the daughter of a prominent merchant of Sweetwater, she is a
beautiful and sweet girl, having attended from Erick High school in 1922,
and her friends here are numerous.
Mr. Harvey Smith, son of Mrs. C. E. Smith of this City, is one of Erick's
most prosperous young business men, a good christian boy, of sterling
character.
We predict for this splendid couple, a happy and prosperous future.

Married.  Sunday afternoon Rev. J. L. Haddock performed a marriage
ceremony for Raymond Eastman of Jester and Miss Ethel Cox of Mayfield. 
The ceremony was rather unique in that the young couple sat in their car
in front of the J. L. Haddock home.
Their only attendants were Bill Searcy and wife of Mayfield.
We join their friends in extending best wishes and congratulations.

Renfro - Mason
Frank Mason of Gaines, Texas, and Miss Ada Renfro of Erick were united in
the Holy bonds of matrimony last Saturday.
The ceremony that made them one was performed by Rev. Graham at the
Methodist Parsonage.

Mooney - Van Tassel
Miss Glovena Mooney of Erick and Everett Van Tassel of Vinson were married
at the home of the bride's parents on December 18.  The ceremony was
performed before a large number of friends and relatives, Rev. A. G. Greer
officiating.
The guests were served with a beautiful wedding dinner immediately
following the ceremony.
The young people expect to make their future home in the Shiloh community.

Clarence Brawley and Miss Stadie Strickland and Quincy Brawley and Miss
Annie Peterson were united in matrimony by Rev. J. F. Graham, Dec. 18th at

Autrey Peppers and Miss Mayme Sullivan of Delhi were quietly married at
the Christian parsonage last Thursday evening, Bro. I. Q. McCorkle
performed the ceremony.

Maiden and Miss Eula Anderson both of Texola were quietly united in

Burris - McCoy
It seems that cupid takes particular delight in casting his poisonous
darts into the hearts of Erick's "promoters of intellectual expansion"
that is our school teachers.
The latest of the little blind imp's victims is Mr. Ted Burris, science
teacher in Erick High School.  Mr. Burris was quietly married to Miss
Gladys McCoy at Boise City, Texas, Dec. 24.
Both young people are residents of Weatherford, where they will make their
home after the expiration of this school year.  Mrs. Burris is teaching at
Boise City.
The Democrat wishes them the longest happiest married life ever.

Riverview News.
Miss Della Vann one of River View's most charming and accomplished young
ladies was united in marriage to Mr. Fillmore James of Wheeler, Texas,
Saturday afternoon in Erick at the home of Rev. Wilson.
Mr. And Mrs. James will make their future home near Wheeler.  We are sorry
to lose her from our midst but our loss is Wheeler's gain.
River View extends congratulations to Mr. And Mrs. James and wishes their
cup of joy to always be full to the brim.

CORNELISON - TRACY
The home of Mr. And Mrs. D. W. Tracy on Fourth street, was the scene of
one of the most beautiful weddings of the season on Sunday last, when Miss
Ollie, daughter of Judge and Mrs. D. W. Tracy, was united in marriage to
J. Raymond Cornelison.
The home was beautifully decorated for the ceremony.  Mrs. Jackson
presided at the piano, and as she softly played the wedding march, in the
presence of about seventy-five guests and friends, the bride entered the
bride-chamber, accompanied by her father.  They were met by the groom and
his brother, Virgil Cornelison, who acted as best man, and the father gave
his daughter in marriage to Mr. J. Raymond Cornelison.
The bride was dressed in white canton crepe, and bore on her arm a
beautiful bouquet of bridal roses.  The bridesmaid, Miss Etta Thomas, wore
a gown of orchid colored canton crepe and carried a bouquet of pink roses.
The groom and his best man were dressed in conventional black.
The beautiful double ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Stigler of the
local Baptist church, in his usual solemn and impressive manner.  The
bride tossed the bouquet which was caught in the arms of Miss Elsie Hover
of Mangum.
Following the ceremony a bountiful wedding feast was served, which lasted
for several hours.
The bride has grown to womanhood among us, and is loved by all who know
her.  She is a beautiful young lady, highly accomplished, and possesses a
rare and gentle disposition and tender spirit which endears her to all. 
She graduated from the Sayre high school three years ago and has since
been attending Oklahoma University at Norman where she has made an
enviable record, and where her many accomplishments and lovable
disposition has won for her a very large circle of close friends.
The groom is the son of Mr. And Mrs. George Cornelison of Erick, and is a
young man who enjoys the confidence of all who know him.  He graduated
from Erick high school after which he attended Oklahoma University at
Norman.  At present he is principal of the Texola schools and has a most
promising future.
This young couple have commenced a life companionship under the most
favorable circumstances, and enjoy the love and admiration of all their
acquaintances, as well as a sincere desire for their future happiness and
prosperity.

A wedding of much interest to Carter and vicinity took place Thursday
evening, January 31, when Miss Ola Belle Jackson and Mr. Moody Rogers were
united in marriage at Sayre.  Mrs. Rogers is one of Carter's young women
and has won many friends here who have known her from childhood.  Mr.
Rogers has also grown to manhood in our vicinity and is a promising young
man.  The young couple will be at home to their friends at the T. C.
Allmon home where they have light housekeeping rooms.
Mrs. W. T. Knight entertained the many friends of Mrs. Moody Rogers Friday
afternoon, Feb 1st, at her pretty home with a bridal shower.

YOUNG - OWEN
Last Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Chas. T.
Rook on Fourth street, Levi T. Young and Miss Pearl Owen were united in
marriage, the wedding being a very modest but beautiful affair attended
only by a very few close friends of the bride and groom.
Mrs. Rook decorated the home very prettily and the contracting pair
marched from the hall into the living room where they were met with the
circle of friends by Rev. J. T. Means, the officiating minister, who
pronounced a very solemn and impressive ceremony.
Mrs. Young has for the past three years been an employee in the office of
the Sayre Headlight, coming here from her home at Thomas, Oklahoma.
Chas. J. Seely was first to show his devotion to the faithful employee by
being first to kiss the bride and after congratulations, presented the
happy couple with a set of six very beautiful pearl handled fruit knives.
Mr. Young has been a resident of Sayre for a number of years, coming here
as manager of the Greer house and since, having been connected with
numerous business enterprises of the city.
Both have hosts of friends who extend hearty congratulations and wish the
newly weds long and happy lives.

DEMPSEY.
Mr. Cleto Franklin and Miss Louzia Yostes were united in marriage last
Friday by Rev. Vines of Rankin.  The young couple are well known and have
hosts of friends who wish them a long happy and prosperous wedded life. 
They will make their home with the parents of the groom, Mr. And Mrs. G.
W. Franklin, at present.

bonds of matrimony last Sunday at the Christian parsonage.

Married.  Miss Gertrude Graham and Ivan Blair of Elk City were quietly
married at the Christian parsonage here Sunday, February 17th.
They succeeded in keeping their marriage a secret until Friday when they
left on the 6:15 for Elk City.
Mrs. Blair informs us that they will travel for about a year and will then
make their home in or near Elk City.

married at the home of D. L. Patterson last Friday night.  Both young
people are formerly of near Sweetwater, Bro. DeBord of the Nazarene Church
officiated.

Lyle - Flaxman
Miss Marjorie Lyle and Phillip Flaxman, Sr., of Amarillo, were quietly
married at the Christian Church of that place last week.
Mr. Flaxman and Miss Lyle are both well known here, he being the former
proprietor of the Dixie Store and she being bookkeeper there for some
time.  Mr. And Mrs. Flaxman have gone to the Eastern states for a short
honeymoon.
The Democrat extends congratulations to the happy couple.

Miss Thelma Robertson and Jack Tipton were united in marriage Sunday, the
24th of February.  They moved into their new home near the Cotton store.

Married.  At the home of Eld. C. F. O'Connor, Thursday, Feb. 28th, Mr.
Walter A. Lowry and Miss Mary Cleo Scott.  Both parties are well known in
and around Erick.  Miss Scott is the daughter of Mr. John Scott, a
resident of Beckham county for about twenty years.  Mr. Lowry is a son of
Grandpa Lowry, 3 miles east of Erick.
Elder C. F. O'Connor, officiating. We are sure their many friends wish
them every happiness.

NEWPORT - TURNER
Mr. Edward Newport, familiarly known about Sayre as "Spider," and shop
foreman of the Sayre Headlight, took unto himself a bride last Monday
evening, who before the marriage was Miss Anna Turner, daughter of Mr. And
Mrs. Jim Turner of Doxey.
Mrs. Newport has for a number of months been an employee on the local
switchboard of the Bell Telephone Co. and has been reared in and near
Sayre.  She, and the estimable family of which she was a member, have a
wide acquaintance, especially among the older settlers of the Sayre-Doxey
community and number their friends by their acquaintances.
Mr. Newport came to Sayre about a year ago to accept a position with the
Sayre Headlight and states that in his wanderings he has found no place

opportunity with pleasure and foresight.  "Spider" is an expert in his
craft and has made a host of friends since coming to Sayre.
The marriage of Mr. Newport being the second to take place among the
Headlight force recently, Chas. J. states that it seems as tho the "Old
Man" had better keep a good eye on the look out since this is leap year or
he may be wooed and won by the wiles of some wonderful widow.

STORY - WHITEHURST
Mr. J. A. Story of Elk City and Miss Esther Whitehurst of this city were
married Saturday at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Sol Lewis on 5th street.
The bride is the charming daughter of Hary (sic) Whitehurst, and has grown
to womanhood in Sayre, being one of our city's most popular and lovable
young ladies.
The groom is a popular young man of Elk City and is a member of the Story
Hotel and Amusement company firm.
Mr. And Mrs. Story left immediately after the ceremony for Hot Springs
where they will spend a couple of months and from there will visit for a
while at other points before returning to Elk City to make their home.
Their friends, who are numbered by their acquaintances, wish for them many
years of wedded bliss.

McAMIS - SELVY
Miss Jewell McAmis, of this city, and Mr. John Selvy, of Cordell, were
quietly married Sunday afternoon at the Methodist parsonage in this city,
Rev. J. C. Morris officiating.
Both these young people are well known in Sayre and also well liked.  They
have made many friends among the younger set who will regret to learn of
their departure from our city.  Their many friends here wish them success
and prosperity wherever they might be.
They will make their future home in Cordell, after a short honeymoon in
various parts of Texas.

Miss Flora Walker and Mr. Allie Shackles were united in marriage at Elk
City last Saturday.  Miss Flora who has lived in this community for
several years and has recently taught in our school, but taught at Rock
Bluff in the past term, is a very popular young lady, while her husband is
a popular and progressive young farmer of Sandstone, where they will
reside.
They visited at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Dale Clark Sunday and attended
singing Sunday evening and received the congratulations and best wishes of
their many friends.

First in Beckham County.
An unusual event occurred at the courthouse last Saturday afternoon when
Leslie Riggins and Annie Munn, colored, of the Alf Tayler farm near Port
were married by Judge R. S. Andrews in the District Court room in the
presence of the assembled county officials.  Judge Andrews says that this
event marked a new experience in wide range of marrying folks, as this is
the first colored ceremony which he has ever performed.

Williams - Simpson
Illa Williams, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. D. Williams, and Curtis Simpson,
son of Mr. And Mrs. Simpson were united in marriage by Rev. Wells, August
24, both the young people are residents of Berlin.  A large crowd gathered
at the home of the bride's parents Monday evening to wish them every
happiness in their adventure.

Brooks - Lackey
Miss Madelyn Brooks and Mr. Jack Lackey, both of this city, were quietly
married at the home of Rev. Morris, pastor of the M. E. church of this
city, on Thursday night, last.  Mrs. Lackey, for the past year has been
connected with the Owl Drug Co., while Mr. Lackey is a member of the firm
of "Cuff's Ready-to-wear" here and at Clinton.  The young couple didn't
announce the wedding and only told a few friends Saturday, when they
started to Wichita Falls, Texas, to spend a few days.  The Journal joins
their many friends in wishing them much happiness and prosperity.

Married.  Mr. William A. Odom of Lawton and Miss Rose Sabine of Chickasha
were united in marriage at Chickasha last Friday, Oct. 3.
Mr. Odom is a son of A. Odom who conducts the feed yard on south main. 
About three years ago he joined the U. S. Army and is now located at Ft.
Sill.  His wife will remain with his father here until his enlistment
expires.

An interesting announcement is that of the marriage of Miss Effie Sanders
to Mr. John M. Salyer at the home of Mr. And Mrs. J. C. Hood Saturday,

The bride is the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Sanders of Texola, and is a
young lady of charming personality.  She has been here for about two years
employed with the Court Clerk's office.
John Salyer is employed at The First National Bank, coming here from
Cheyenne about two years ago.
Mr. And Mrs. Salyer have a host of friends here who wish them a long,
happy and prosperous life.

The wedding of Ellen Bryce and Frank Cocoanougher was solemnized January
11 at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. C. K. Conwell of Altus.  Red
and white carnations and ferns decorated the rooms.  The ceremony was read
by Rev. Broom of the First M. E. Church.  Only the relatives living at
Altus were present at the wedding.
There is no need of introducing Mr. And Mrs. Cocoanougher to the people of
this vicinity for they are known well throughout this community, both
having lived here a number of years.  We join with their many, many
friends in wishing them many years of happy married bliss.

STUBBS - LINDSEY
Grady Stubbs and Miss Fleta Lindsey, both of Erick, were quietly married
at the home of Mr. And Mrs. W. A. Stubbs, the former's Uncle and Aunt, in
Sayre, Thursday evening, January 15th, Rev. Means, Pastor of the First
Presbyterian Church of Sayre tied the wedding knot.
Mrs. Stubbs is a daughter of Mr. J. R. Lindsey, who moved here last year
from Mountain View, where she is a graduate of the Mountain View High
School.  She with her friend, Miss Celia McDonald have established a
Beauty Parlor here and have built up a large patronage and also has made a
number of friends since coming here.
Mr. Stubbs is the second son of Mr. And Mrs. B. T. Stubbs, having lived
here most of his life and his friends here are numerous.  He finished Hill
Business College in 1921 and after finishing accepted a position as
bookkeeper with a large Mercantile Store at Alanreed, Texas.  Last Fall he
was employed by the Powell Gin Co. as bookkeeper at Texola, and at the
present time is bookkeeper at the Western Lumber and Hardware Company
here.
Both Mr. And Mrs. Stubbs tried to keep the wedding a secret for a while
just for the sensation of it, and succeeded pretty good for a week, and
they tell us this time it was the man who could not keep a secret, as
Grady was the first to tell it.
They will make their home with Mr. And Mrs. B. T. Stubbs for the time being.
We join their many friends in wishing them a happy and prosperous married
life.

A wedding of interest to Sayre and Beckham county people was solemnized a
the home of Mr. And Mrs. John Hollaway, four miles northwest of Sayre at 5
o'clock Wednesday afternoon, when their daughter, Miss Arline, was given
in marriage to Marvin Fuchs, son of Mr. And Mrs. C. G. Fuchs, of this
city.

and she has a host of friends in this city and this part of the state who

both of Oklahoma City, has been made to friends in Beckham Co.  Miss

who now lives at Okeene where Mr. Paschal is engaged in the newspaper

George L. Pounds, manager of the Vallance Bros. Grocery of Memphis, Texas,
and Miss Lillymae Conwell, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. G. E. Conwell of this
city, were quietly married at the home of the bride Sunday afternoon, May
3, in the presence of a few friends and relatives.
Miss Lillymae is a graduate of the Sayre High school and of Hill's
Business College, Oklahoma City.  For the past three months she has held a
clerical position with the Parker Motor Co., of Memphis, Texas.
Rev. T. J. Means, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of this city
officiated.
The bride and groom will spend their honeymoon in Colorado, after which
they will be at home to friends in Memphis, Texas.

pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating.  Mrs. Clifner has grown to
young womanhood here and is a graduate of Sayre High School and is a
student at Southwestern Normal at Weatherford.  During the past winter she
taught the primary department in the Mayfield school.  She is known and
admired by a large circle of friends for her winning and lovable
personality.  Mr. Clifner has grown to manhood in this county and at
present is employed at the Ford Garage.  The young couple left shortly
after the ceremony by auto for an outing in Colorado and other western
points.

of the bride's parents on North Fourth street Monday afternoon at 2 P.M.
Rev. J. T. Means pastor of the First Presbyterian Church performed the
ceremony.  Mrs. Ima Hornbeck sang, "I Love You Truly", just proceeding the
ceremony.  Mrs. Kyle has grown to young womanhood in Sayre and possessed
of many admirable traits.  For several years she was a clerk in the post
office and enjoys an extensive acquaintance in the town and surrounding
community.  Mr. Kyle came to Sayre during the oil boom and during his stay
here made many friends.  Mr. And Mrs. Kyle left on the afternoon train for
Tulsa where they will make their future home.

Miss Fern Pyle and Mr. George Stevens, both of Chickasha, were married in
Chickasha, Tuesday June 9th, at 11:00 o'clock.
They left immediately for Colorado coming by the way of Erick and stopped
overnight with relatives here, and left Wednesday for parts of Colo.,
where they will spend a short honeymoon at the summer cottage of an aunt
of Mr. Stevens, from there they go to Denver where they will make their
future home.
The bride is the charming and winsome daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John Pyle
now of Chickasha, but who lived in Erick for a number of years, and has a
host a friends as well as a number of relatives who wish them many years
of happy married life.

Miss Monta Martin and Hadley U. Riley were quietly married in Sayre last
Thursday afternoon.
The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J. M. Martin of the Mt.
Carmel community, and is an accomplished young lady with a charming
personality.  She taught at the Choctaw School this last year and made
many friends with her earnest efforts with her pupils and patrons.
The groom is the third son of Mrs. Ada Riley who has lived here
practically all his life, and has many friends here.
They left Tuesday on an overland trip to parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas
for a short honeymoon.  Their many friends extend to this esteemable young

Taylor Travelstead of Texola.  They will make their home in Erick.  Their

MISS GRACE JOHNSON AND HENRY HARGRAVES MARRIED.
On Monday, July 26th, 1925, the words were spoken that made Miss Grace
Johnson, of Sayre, and Mr. J. H. Hargraves, of Texola, man and wife.  The
ceremony was performed at Arapaho, Oklahoma, and the newly weds visited
there a short while with the brother of the groom before returning to
Texola.
The union is the culmination of a romance starting early last spring when
Miss Johnson came to Texola to open up a marcelling parlor in The Palace
Barber Shop, where Mr. Hargraves was working as a barber.
Mr. And Mrs. Hargraves are now at home to their friends in Texola, having
taken light housekeeping rooms in the J. H. McCaskill home.  This paper
joins with their many friends in extending congratulations.

TOPPER - TOWLER
Mr. A. E. Topper of Sweetwater, Oklahoma, and Mrs. K. Y. Towler of
Fayetteville, Ark., were united in the holy bonds of Matrimony July 29th,
1925.  Mr. And Mrs. Topper left Fayetteville Thursday by train for Sayre,
Okla., from there they came over to Sweetwater Saturday evening to Mr.
Topper's son John.  They were tendered a fine reception that evening by
about a hundred neighbors and friends.  Sunday evening they were
accompanied to their home which Mr. Topper had in readiness for his bride.
Mr. Topper's many acquaintances and friends heartily congratulate this
couple.  Mr. Topper has been one of the good citizens of both Beckham and
Roger Mills counties for a good many years, and he will still make his
home with us.  Mr. Topper is 79 yrs old and his bride 48 years old.
Mrs. Topper is a sister of P. R. Sanders of Sayre, Okla.

TUGGLE - PARKER
Mr. C. P. Tuggle, formerly of Erick, Oklahoma, but now of Sulphur, and
Miss Velma Parker, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. L. C. Parker, were married at
the home of the bride's parents Tuesday at 8 p.m. by Rev. Claude Johnston,
pastor of the Calvary Baptist church.
The bride is one of Sulphur's popular young ladies.  She is a graduate of
Sulphur high school and has also attended East Central Normal.  She has
been a teacher in the Washington School.
Mr. Tuggle is employed with the Rose Tailoring Shop.  He is a promising
young business man and has made many friends in Sulphur.  The young couple
will make their home here.

On last Sunday at l:00 P.M., there was solemnized the wedding of Miss
Ethel Lovelady, to Mr. Walter McGuire, at the home of the bride's parents
here in Texola.
Mrs. McGuire is the charming and accomplished daughter of Mr. And Mrs. H.
E. Lovelady.  She has spent all her life here and graduated from the
Texola schools.  Mr. McGuire is a young man of esteemable character and is
a teacher in the public schools of Beckham county having taught at River
View the past two years.
After the ceremony was performed by Rev. Tinkle in the presence of only
the immediate family of the bride, a fine dinner was served.  The
newly-weds are spending the week at the home of the groom's parents who
resides in the Grimes community and will depart the later part of this
week for Weatherford where they both expect to attend the coming term of
the Southwest Teacher's College.

The Press office printed some beautiful wedding announcements last week

Jackson of this city, and Mr. Alton Weeks is a fine young business man of

well known couples were struck by the dart of Dan Cupid.
Miss Lovena Dobbs, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Hubb Dobbs, a popular Senior
in High School, and Mr. Harold S. Borin, son of Mr. And Mrs. Chas. Borin,
a live wire Sophomore in E H S, eloped to Sayre Sunday afternoon and were
married by Judge Andrews at the home of  Mr. And Mrs. Tom Lowry.  They
have quit school and will be missed as they were the leaders of their
classes and they are receiving congratulations from their many friends.
Miss Dollie Brown and Mr. Homer Abla were married Saturday afternoon at
the Baptist Parsonage by Rev. Geo. C. Hutto.  The bride is the youngest
daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J. Z. Brown and has lived near Erick since
childhood.  The groom is the son of Mr. O. W. Abla who also has lived here
most of his life.  They are receiving best wishes for a happy married
life.
Miss Odie Graves and Mr. Cove Sewell, both of Texola, were married Sunday
noon by Rev. Hutto at the Baptist Parsonage in Erick.
Miss Winnie Morgan, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J. B. Morgan who have resided
south of town sixteen years or more, and Rev. Davis, son of Mr. And Mrs.
H. W. Davis, who are residing in the Hibbard community, were married in
Sayre Sunday evening at 8 o'clock by Judge Andrews in the presence of Mr.
And Mrs. Henry Self.  Both Bride and Groom are favorably known in Erick
and vicinity.  They will make their home in Erick.  Congratulations are in

Harris - Montoney
Mrs. Pauline Montoney became the bride of O. H. Harris at a beautiful home
wedding at noon Thursday which was solemnized by Rev. T. E. McSpadden,
pastor of the Altura Presbyterian church.
The ring ceremony was performed at the home of Mrs. A. R. Lange, 3126 Fort
Boulevard, El Paso, Texas, the bride's sister.
Mr. And Mrs. H. E. Sillmian attended the bride and groom.  After the
ceremony a wedding luncheon was served at the home of Mr. And Mrs.
Sillmian, which was beautifully decorated in pink and white cut flowers.
A large number of gifts was received by the bridal couple.
Ove was a Senior in Erick High, but gave up the school to join the ranks
of Uncle Sam, something like one year ago.  Ove is a boy liked by all who

Miss Lewella Wilkinson and Mr. Troy Maxwell were quietly married Sunday
morning, November the 15th.  The bride is the oldest daughter of Mr. And
Mrs. Jim Wilkinson.  The groom is the son of Mr. S. P. Maxwell, both are
well known around Erick.  Mr. And Mrs. Maxwell left Sunday morning for
Bejamin (sic), Texas, to visit her grandparents, taking Mrs. Jim Wilkinson
with them.

MARRIED.  W. D. Nichols and Mrs. Alice Beadle, ran away last Sunday to
Sayre and were married by Rev. Steele, Baptist minister of Sayre.  Mr.
Nichols secured his license last Thursday when he quietly went to Sayre
whispered to the Clerk and paid $2.50 for his bride.  The groom is 63
years old and his blushing bride is only 60.  They are receiving
congratulations at the Cozy Café.

TAYLOR - BARKER WEDDING
Last Saturday evening at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Fred Smith, Railroad
Hill, a large circle of friends and relatives gathered to be present at
the wedding of Mr. Bill Taylor and Miss Nova Barker, in which Rev.
Deathredge united the couple in the holy bonds of matrimony.
The bride is the charming young daughter of Mrs. W. A. Barker of Sayre.
The groom is popular young man of this city.
Those present were:  the bride's mother, Mrs. W. A. Barker; Mrs. Geo.
Yarnell and daughter Beatrice Nevil; Mrs. E. E. Whitten and daughter,

After the ceremony a delicious supper was served which Mrs. Fred Smith and
Mrs. C. W. Sutton had prepared for the occasion.

GRIFFIN - FULLER WEDDING
Miss Greta Griffin, daughter of Mrs. Laura Harris, and Mr. Weldon Fuller,
prominent young business man of this city, were married at the home of the
bride's mother, 507 W. Elm Street, last Saturday evening by Rev. J. T.
Means, leaving immediately after the ceremony for Amarillo, Texas, where
they spent Sunday, returning to this city Monday.
Following the return from Amarillo a wedding dinner was given at Mrs.
Laura Harris' home, which was attended by twenty relatives and friends of
the happy couple.
They will make their home in this city.  Mr. Fuller is assistant manager
of the McAnerny Motor Company, local Ford agents.  Mr. And Mrs. Fuller
have the well wishes of their host of friends.

LOWRANCE - HEFLIN
Earl Lowrance and Miss Lovelle Heflin were united in the holy bonds of
matrimony in Sayre, January fifth, nineteen hundred and twenty six.  The
Baptist minister of Sayre read the wedding vows.
The groom is a barber in one of the leading shops in Sayre.  He is a
handsome young man with a good personality.  He is the son of a
progressive farmer who resides near Sayre.
The bride is a talented musician, being an expert pianist, and is also
good on the violin, and is a charming young lady.  She, like her brother
Weltha, have grown up in Erick and has a host of friends to her credit. 
Her marriage was a complete surprise to most of the people in Erick.  She
is the only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J. W. Heflin and her marriage was
rather a shock to them.
Their many friends here and in Sayre join in, in wishing them a long and
prosperous married life.
Mr. And Mrs. Earl Lowrance are at home to their friends in Sayre in their
lovely apartment on 4th Street.

Mr. Curtis Madison of Sayre and Miss Lula Lawley of Erick were married in
Texola, Sunday afternoon, Jan. 31, by Rev. Danner, pastor of the Baptist
Church, in the presence of Mrs. Lena Price, Mr. Madison's mother, and his
sister, Thelma, Gladys Robinson and Mr. And Mrs. B. H. Talley, friends of
the groom, all of Sayre and Mr. And Mrs. Victor Adcox, sister and
brother-in-law of the bride.  The bride is the eldest daughter of Mr. And
Mrs. C. C. Lawley.  She has a lovable disposition and has many friends in
Erick.  The groom is a nephew of contractor, T. E. Pope, and is helping on
the Stagner Hosptial.  They will make their home in Sayre.

Miss Lenora Kitchens, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. H. N. Kitchens of Sayre,
Route A, and Mr. Roy W. Powell, son of Mr. And Mrs. W. J. Powell of
Mountain View, Okla., were quietly married at Sayre, Tuesday evening March
2nd, 1926 by Rev. Weeks of Sayre.
Mrs. Powell is a teacher of Beckham county and is now teaching the Primary
room at Plainview.  She is a very highly respected young lady and has a
fine reputation as a teacher.  She taught at Heatley last term.
Mr. Powell is a well thought of young man, with a fine reputation.
Congratulations are extended to them by wishing them a long and happy
wedded life.

8th 1926 at 4:30 p.m.
Many of Erick people remember Francis Burton, daughter of Mr. And Mrs.
John Burton, who resided in Erick a few years ago.

in business in Sayre the past year, and is a most enterprising young man. 
After the ceremony they returned to this city, where they will be at home
to their friends, who wish them a happy and prosperous life.

NUNLEY - MC COMBS
Another romance culminated the 27th of February in the happy marriage of
two Elk City teachers.  The contracting parties were Mr. Massey J. McCombs
and Miss Callie Nunley.
The wedding ceremony was performed at Norman, Oklahoma, where both had
attended the state university.  The marriage took place in the beautiful
McFarlin Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, in that city.
This is a wonderful structure, the greatest building of this denomination
in the world, and was built, furnished and presented to Norman by Mr. And
Mrs. R. M. McFarlin, of San Antonio, Texas.  It was built as a memorial to
their son buried there.
The officiating minister was Doctor Barton, the pastor of the church.
Mr. McCombs has been employed as one of the teachers in the Elk City
Public Schools for a year and has given perfect satisfaction.  Miss Nunley
has also been primary supervisor in the Elk City Schools and her work too
highly appreciated.  They have friends all around who were delighted to
hear of a well earned courtship and happy marriage and who extend the best
wishes for their happiness and future success, and the Journal join the

Miss Nunley is a sister of Mrs. Elmer Ray and Mrs. A. B. Howard of Erick
and has a host of friends in Erick.  Miss Nunley's parents live near
Texola.

MARRIED.  Edward Killingsworth and Miss Pauline Hill were quietly married
Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Methodist parsonage, Rev. Hutchinson
reading the marriage vows.  Only a few relatives and friends witnessed the
ceremony.
Mrs. Killingsworth is the only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. C. M. Hill and is
beloved by her parents and all who know her.
Mr. Edward Killingsworth is a son of Mr. And Mrs. J. M. Killingsworth who
reside near Shamrock, Texas.  He has a score of friends to his credit here
and at Shamrock.
Best wishes, too, are extended to this young couple and may they receive
encouragement from their friends as they are only seventeen years each and
need all the good will possible.

Double Wedding.  The double wedding that took place in Wheeler, Texas,
Saturday, March 20th and that of Miss Opal Pyle and Bobbie Blancet, and
Jean Morgan and A. L. Yeary, was one of the most complete surprise to the
people of Erick and vicinity have witnessed in quite a while.
Both young men are employed as cooks at the City Café.  They asked to get
off Saturday afternoon, not telling their object.
The girls had remarked to Ruby Morgan time after time for two days that
they were going to get married, but each time they said this teasingly
till Ruby thought nothing would come of it. - Then late Saturday the
couples arrived home and announced their marriage.
Opal Pyle Blancett (sic) is the only daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Joe Pyle,
who has grown to womanhood in Erick.  She is a girl with a lovable
disposition and adored by her parents.  She is also a talented musician.
Bobbie Blancett, too, has grown up in Erick.  He is a likeable person and
has a host of friends here. Though like many other boys he has been full
of mischief, but now since he has taken unto himself a wife he has made
the remark that he will settle down and we are going to trust in him.
Jean Morgan Yeary is the second daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John A. Morgan,
who has lived in Erick for the past two years, having moved here from
their farm south of town.  All who know Jean love her.  She is a nice
quite (sic) and refined girl.
A. J. Yeary, whose parents live in Amarillo, has only lived in Erick a
short time, but since his arrival here has made a number of friends.
The good wishes are extended to these young people.

On March the 14th, Miss Billie Jene Downes and Mr. Cicero Myrick stole a
march of their many friends by going to McLean, Texas, and getting married
and then trying to keep it a secret for 3 weeks.
Both of these young people are well known here.  Mrs. Myrick having lived
here the greater part of her life while Mr. Myrick has lived here only two
or three years.  This young couple is highly respected and well thought of
in this community.

Whittie Hughes, well known Erick young man, who has been employed with the
Simmons Gin Company and Miss Edna Earl Davis, an accomplished and
well-to-do young lady, stole a march on their many friends last Sunday,
April 11th and went to Sayre where the wedding ceremony was read by Judge
Andrews in the presence of Elmer Lewis and Henry White.
The wedding was kept a secret until the first of this week when Whittie
just had to buy the cigars to ease everybody's curiosity.  All their
friends join in wishing them a prosperous journey through life.
Mr. And Mrs. Hughes will be at home to their friends in their charming
bungalow that is just being completed for these two turtle doves.

POPULAR YOUNG PEOPLE MARRY.
John Fowler and Miss Ruth Garrett Married on Sunday Last.
John Fowler, clerk at the Russell Pharmacy, and Miss Ruth Garrett,
bookkeeper at the First National Bank, were married at the home of Mr. And
Mrs. W. E. Nix, on North Fifth street, last Sunday afternoon by Rev. T. N.
Weeks of the Methodist church.  Only a few relatives and close personal
friends were present.
The groom came here from Weatherford, Oklahoma, about a year ago, entering
the employ of the Owl Drug Store.  A few months later he left there to
accept a position in the Russell Pharmacy.  During his residence in this
city John has made a host of warm personal friends.
The bride has been in the employ of the First National Bank for several
years past and enjoys a very wide acquaintance with the people of Sayre
and vicinity, by whom she is highly respected - in fact, the newlyweds are
a very popular young couple in this section, and an unusually large number
of friends will wish them a life of happiness and prosperity.
After a short visit with relatives they will return to this city and
resume their positions making their home in rooms over the Diamond C
stores which are already fitted up for their use.

The marriage of Miss Bettie Cooper to Lowell King will take place at 12:30
o'clock Saturday at the St. Luke M. E. Church at Oklahoma City.  The
wedding vows will be read by Rev. Forney Hutchinson, pastor.  Miss Cooper
is the youngest daughter of Mr. Charlie Cooper who spent her childhood in
Erick and graduated from E. H. S. in 1919.  She moved with her parents
soon afterwards to Oklahoma City where she entered Hills Business College
and finished in a short time with honors - she then accepted a position
with the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce where she held a responsible
position up to date, with many words of praise given her by Ed.
Overholser, President of the Chamber of Commerce.  Miss Cooper is a girl
with a lovable disposition, and too, she is quite talented, being a good
musician and a writer of prose and poetry.  One of her writings was
published in the 89ers Edition a few years ago.
The writer is not intimately acquainted with Mr. Lowell, but having met
him can say that he is a man with a friendly disposition, but those who
know him personally praise him as a gentlemanly young man with a strong
personality who is worthy of Miss Cooper's love.
Immediately after the ceremony they will leave for parts of Colorado for a
short honeymoon.
Those from here who will be in attendance at the wedding will be:  Mr. And
Mrs. Charlie Cooper, Miss Rachel Brook and Miss Kathryn Stewart.

GALLAWAY - GRIGGS
Dr. Curtis W. Gallaway and Miss Esther Griggs of Clarendon, Texas, were
quietly married, June 12, in the home of the bride's parents, Rev. J. H.
Hamblen of the First Methodist church officiating.  The impressive ring
ceremony was used.  The happy couple left immediately for points in
Oklahoma.  The groom is a son of Mr. And Mrs. W. A. Gallaway of this city,
but he is practicing in Clarendon, Texas.
Dr. C. W. Gallaway, one of our native boys, but now a resident of
Clarendon, Texas, surprised his parents and friends, Sunday, by bringing
home his bride.

George Wilson Married.
An unusually beautiful and impressive wedding took place at the First
Baptist church Monday evening at 8:30 when Miss Blodwin Paullus Jones
became the bride of Mr. George Raymond Wilson of Butler.
The church was artistically decorated for the wedding.  The chancel was
banked with a wealth of ferns, palms and potted plants, and clusters and
baskets of sweet peas and larkspur, tied with bows of orchid tulle lent a
touch of brighter color.  Wicker floor baskets filled with sprays of
orchid and yellow blossoms stood at either side and a basket of larkspur
in orchid shades, decorated the console.
An arch of summer greenery rose from the chancel and smaller arches formed
the gateway to the aisles.  Loops of orchid tulle caught in bows at the
ends of the pews marked the sections reserved for the relatives, the Young
Women's auxiliary, the Philathes circle and other special guests.  The
entire lower floor and balcony of the auditorium were filled with friends
of the popular young couple.
A brief musical program was given as a prelude by Mr. Paolo Conte, who
played the wedding music.  Just preceding the ceremony, Mr. Sam E. Jones,
an uncle of the bride, sang "Because" by D'Hardeot.
With the opening stains of the bridal chorus from "Lohengrin" the bridal
party entered, Dr. J. Benjamin Lawrence, pastor of the church, followed by
the bridegroom and his best man, Mr. Clifford Zoll, entering from the
doorway at the right of the chancel, while the ushers, Mr. J. P. Jones,
brother of the bride, Mr. Ollie Stone, Mr. Carl White and Mr. William
Fulton, college friends of the bridegroom entered down the left aisle.
Following them were the bridesmaids, Miss Grace Wilson, sister of the
bridegroom, Miss Tydfil Jones, a cousin of the bride, Miss Opal Martin and
Miss Beatrice Cox.  Miss Sara Jones of McAlester, an aunt of the bride,
and maid of honor, came next followed by the two little flower girls, Sara
Margaret Jones and Nita Margaret McManus, who strewed rose petals from
dainty baskets in the pathway of the bride, who entered on the arm of her
father, Mr. G. F. Jones.  The bride was met at the arched gateway by Mr.
Wilson and together they took their places before the altar, attended by
the maid of honor, the best man and the flower girls, while two
bridesmaids and two ushers stood at either side.
The sweetly solemn and impressive ring ceremony was performed by Dr.
Lowrance, Mr. Conte softly playing "Love's Old Sweet Song" during the
taking of the marriage vows.  Mendelssohn's Wedding March was played as a
recessional as the wedding party passed out through the right aisle.
The bride who is a winsome and beautiful brunett, looked lovely in her
wedding gown of lustrous white Duchesse satin, the full skirt, shirred at
the waist, being bordered with a wide transparent hem of white silk lace
and a broad band of the lace forming the front of the close fitting
bodice.  Her wedding veil of white silk net, gathered in becoming cap
shape about her head and held in place by clusters of orange blossoms,
fell to the floor in graceful folds.  She carried a shower bouquet of
Bride's roses and sweet peas.
The maid of honor, Miss Sara Jones, wore a straight line evening gown of
Adriatic blue cut velvet, with a picture hat of pink georgette trimmed
with two large blue pompoms.  Her flowers were roses and sweet peas.
The bridesmaids wore robe de style gowns in pastel shades with wide
brimmed georgette hats in corresponding colors.  Miss Grace Wilson's gown
was of white georgette over orchid taffeta.  Miss Beatrice Cox wore yellow
taffeta opening in front over a gold slip.  Miss Opal Martin wore rose
georgette and Miss Tydfil Jones' gown was of sunburst taffeta trimmed with
georgette.  Their corsages were of sweet peas in harmonizing shades.
The bride's small sister, Sara Margaret Jones, who was one of the flower
girls wore a ruffled frock of pink flat crepe with blue chiffon bow on the
left shoulder; her cousin, Nita Margaret McManus of McAlester wearing a
similar frock of blue crepe with a pink chiffon bow.
Following the wedding, an informal reception was held at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. And Mrs. G. F. Jones, on North Aydelotte street; the
guests being limited to the wedding party, members of the two families and
intimate friends of the young couple.
A color note of the orchid and yellow prevailed in the appointments of the
luncheon table, from which a dainty ice course was served, the bride
cutting and serving her wedding cake.
During the reception the newly wedded pair cleverly eluded their friends
and left by motor for Oklahoma City, going from there to Medicine Park for
a fortnight honeymoon.  The bride's going away gown was of gray flat
crepe, with plain bodice, full skirt shirred, at the waistline, snug
fitting collar, and long sleeves.  A coat of rose charmeen, trimmed in
gray squirrel and gray close fitting hat, trimmed with ostrich pompoms
completed her costume.
The bride, who came to Shawnee with her parents from McAlester a few years
ago, is a charming and accomplished young woman.  She has been an active
worker in the First Baptist church, where she has been the efficient
president of the Young Women's auxiliary and assistance teacher of the
Philathes class the past year and where her sweet and unassuming nature
and winning personality have endeared her to all her associates.  For the
past three years, she has been private secretary to Mr. H. T. Douglas,
president of the Shawnee National Bank.
Mr. Wilson, who is the son of Rev. and Mrs. S. N. Wilson of Erick, made
many friends here while a student at O. B. U., where he was a popular
member of the class of '25.  For the past year, Mr. Wilson who is an
ordained minister, has been superintendent of schools at Butler and pastor
of the Baptist church at Hammond, a neighboring town.  Mr. And Mrs. Wilson
will be at home at Butler on their return from their honeymoon. - Shawnee

Miss Jewell Cupp and George Staggs, Jr., both of Erick, Okla., were
quietly married last Sunday by Rev John (last name unclear) at his home
here.  Following the ceremony the young couple left on a honeymoon trip to
points in Ark.
The bride is the charming and talented young lady, known and well liked by
most of the young people of this city through trips made here from time to
time.
The groom is the son of Mr. And Mrs. Geo. Staggs of this city and lived
here several years.  For the past several months he has been employed in
Erick, where he and his wife will make their home.
The Texan joins the friends of the couple here and at Erick in wishing

POPULAR COUPLE MARRIED.
A very sweet and solemn ceremony was performed Sunday morning at the home
of Mr. And Mrs. J. C. Green at Lone Oak, when their daughter Elua (sic)
became the bride of Marshall Kelley of Earth, Texas.
The rooms were decorated in pastel shades combined with vines and roses. 
At one end of the living room, was an altar where the couple took their
vows.
The bride looked very charming in a gown of white georgette, with bands of
satin.  Her picture hat was also of white georgette.  The bride is the
lovely daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J. C. Green, and graduated with the class
of '25 from the Sayre High School.
The groom is the son of Mr. And Mrs. Jerry Kelley of Earth Texas, and is a
graduate of Erick High School with the class of '24.  He is very well
known in this vicinity.
The couple will make their home at Earth Texas, where Mr. Kelley is
associated in business with his father.
Out of town guests attending the wedding, were Mrs. Fannie Teague of
Slayton, Texas, and Mr. And Mrs. Geo. Green also of Slayton, Texas, Rev.
and Mrs. R. C. Smith of Foss, Okla., Mr. And Mrs. R. H. Green of Berlin

ROBERTS - WILSON WEDDING.
Popular Couple of Erick Married Last Thursday.
A simple, but impressive home ceremony was performed on Thursday, June
24th, at 8:30 p.m., at the home of Rev. and Mrs. S. N. Wilson of Lone Oak,
when their daughter Grace was united in marriage to Mr. Leonard Roberts.
The living room and dining room were very beautifully decorated with
streamers of pale green and yellow.  At one end of the living room, was an
improvised altar which was decorated with vines and roses, where the
ceremony was performed.
Mr. George Wilson, brother of the bride, sang "O Promise Me" by Reginald
de Koven, after which the bride and groom entered the room, and met before
the altar, where Rev. S. N. Wilson, the father of the bride was standing,
who performed the ceremony.
The bride, who is a petite burnett, looked lovely in her wedding gown of
white georgette.  The lower part of the full skirt was covered with small
white taffeta ruffles.  The dress was worn over an orchid slip, and her
hat was flesh and orchid silk braid.  Mrs. Roberts graduated from Erick
High School with the class of 1924, and has attended Oklahoma Baptist
University at Shawnee one year.  This past year, she has been primary
instructor at Liberty Consolidated school.
The groom is the son of Mr. And Mrs. W. J. Roberts of Sweetwater,
Oklahoma, and graduated from Erick High School with the class of 1925.  He
is now employed by Ray's Drug Store.
After the wedding, an ice course was served by Miss Dora Wilson, a sister
of the bride, assisted by Mrs. George R. Wilson, the bride cutting and
serving her wedding cake.
The guests were limited to a few intimate friends and relatives of the
groom.  They left immediately for Erick where they will make their home.

Percy L. McLean, son of Mr. And Mrs. John McLean, northwest of this city,
and Miss Willie Mae Boyd, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Will Boyd, of the
Murphy Gin section, were married on Saturday last.  The newlyweds are well
known young people and a host of personal friends will join with the
Headlight in extending congratulations.

CARPENTER - SPARKS
Mr. Chauncey T. Carpenter, youngest son of Mr. And Mrs. George T.
Carpenter of Mayfield, and Miss Lorraine Sparks, daughter of Mr. And Mrs.
Harvey Sparks who reside near Texola, were united in marriage at
Weatherford, Oklahoma, July 3d.  Both of the contracting parties are well
and favorably known in this vicinity, and the wedding was not a surprise
to their friends as they have been sweethearts for a long time.  Everybody
is wishing them unbounded success and happiness.
The bride is a lovable young lady with a strong character and is very
talented, having attended college in the east and one year at Weatherford
where she was going at the time of their marriage.  She will teach at
Friendship this coming school term.
The groom is a prosperous young farmer, a man of good morals and has the
respect of all who know him.  He is building a beautiful new home for his
bride which they expect to occupy soon.

Erick Couple Marry Here
Miss Florence Jo Ward and Willie V. Mixon, both of Erick, Okla., were
united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage here Tuesday night at eleven
o'clock.  Rev. W. E. Hamilton, Methodist pastor, officiated at the
wedding. - Wheeler County Texan.
These young people kept their marriage a secret for one week and when
their friends found it out they were given one royal chivorlee (sic) and
are now at home to their friends in the home of Mr. J. C. Mixon.

Sunday afternoon Mr. And Mrs. A. E. Hamilton accompanied Mr. Edgar Hood
and Miss Oklahoma Cargill to Wheeler, Texas, where they were married,
which came as quite a surprise to most of Erick's populace.
Miss Cargill is a daughter of Mayor O. A. Cargill of Oklahoma City and was
here the guest of her uncle, Rolin Cargill and aunt, Mrs. Leo Jackson. 
During her short stay here she has become acquainted with many and all who
have met her are glad of the acquaintance.  She is a graduate of the
Oklahoma City schools and is very popular with the younger set at that
place.  The Daily Oklahoman of Tuesday paid Mrs. Hood several
complimentary remarks under a newspaper half-tone of the charming bride.
Mr. Hood, or "Ed" as we know him, is the type of young man that gives us
much pleasure to compliment on the fast progress he has made in his books.
 Having graduated from Erick High School 4 years ago at the age of 18 and
has had 4 years in pharmacy at the University of Oklahoma at Norman, and
it was there he met Miss Cargill and became very close friends which
ripened into their becoming husband and wife.  Ed is the oldest son of W.
O. Hood and is absolutely a product of Erick of which we are very proud to
own.
We wish this young couple an untold amount of happiness and their many
friends here join the Democrat in hailing the grand sign of joy in their
direction.

The wedding of Miss Pauline Willingham and Newton J. Vann at Sayre August
the 14th was quiet a surprise to friends and relatives of these young
people.
Pauline, the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Willingham who live near Erick is
well known in and vicinity, having been a student of Erick High School. 
She is a charming young lady and J. N. is to be congratulated on winning
her heart and hand.
Newton, the only son of Mr. And Mrs. J. W. Vann, pioneers of Riverview
community, is one of the most highly respected young men.
Mr. And Mrs. J. N. Vann departed soon after the ceremony for Lawton where
they enjoyed a few days honeymoon.
The large group (at least fifty) of young men and women which gathered at
the J. W. Vann home Friday evening to "Charivari" shows how highly
respected was "Newton" among the people of the community.  The crowd
enjoyed old fashioned games and were treated to lots of good candy by the
groom.  They all join in wishing them much happiness in the future.

DILLING - DAVIS
Mr. Clarence Dilling of the Iowa Community and Miss Sadie Davis of the
Coyote Community were quietly married August 21st at the home of Bro.
Hutto in Erick.  Both young people are well known around Erick and
vicinity.  There was a large group of young people (at least 20) which
gathered at the home of D. J. Dilling Saturday evening to "Charivarie"
which showed how highly respected the young couple was by the people of
the community.  The crowd enjoyed a few games after which the groom
treated with lots of candy and cigars.  All report a nice time, and they
all joined in wishing them much happiness in the future.

W. R. White, of Amarillo, and Miss Bertha Rook, of this city, were quietly
married at Cheyenne one week ago last Sunday and are now spending their
honeymoon in New Mexico.

HARRELL - JOCY
Sunday morning Jim Harell drove to Willow where he met Miss Thelma Jocy
from Electra, Texas, bringing her to his mothers, Mrs. W. E. Rogers and
Mr. Rogers home, where they were married by the Rev. Hutto of the Baptist
Church in the presence of immediate relatives and a few intimate friends. 
A wedding dinner had been prepared and was partaken of by the guests, M.
B. Rook and family, Chas. Rogers and family of Spearman, Chas. Mixon and
family, Mrs. C. E. Smith and daughter, Frances; Harvey Smith and wife;
Miss Fannie Anderson of Muleshoe, Texas, and Modelle Sardis and Glendon
Robertson.  They went Sunday evening to the rooms previously engaged at
Mrs. Stort's, where they are at home to their many friends.

WILEMAN - GILBERT
CORNELISON - ANDERSON
A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the home of Ira Cornelison
Saturday nite.  The happy couples were, Dica Wileman and Doss Gilbert and
Amy Cornelison and George Anderson.  Rev. A. H. Hutchinson officiated. 
All four of the young people are well and favorably known here, all of
them having lived the greater part of their lives here except Mr.
Anderson.
Miss Wileman is a graduate of Erick High and is teaching school at Strong
City, this being her second year there.  She has made many friends here by
her cheerful disposition.  Mr. Gilbert is an employee of the Cargill Motor
Co.  He is known here as an efficient man at that place.
Miss Cornelison is also an Erick High girl.  She is a well known and
highly esteemed young lady in and about Erick.  Mr. Anderson is employed
at the Texola Cotton Gin, where he has a responsible position.
The ceremony was performed in the presence of a few relatives and near
friends.  We extend sincere congratulations and very best wishes with the
rest of the community to these young people.

Miss Hazel Cornelison and Raymond Stayton gave their friends the slip
Sunday night and went to Sayre where they were quietly married.  Mrs.
Staton (sic) is a daughter of A. P. Cornelison of this city, she has lived
the greater part of her life in and around Erick.  Mr. Staton with his
father, moved here about three years ago and has made a host of friends
during his stay here.

Miss Viola Cotton and Willard Benton, both of this city, were quietly
married last Saturday evening at the Christian church.  Rev. W. S.
Deatherage performed the ceremony in the presence of a few intimate
friends of the contracting parties.  Mr. And Mrs. Benton are popular young
people of this city, with a large circle of friends.  The newlyweds will
continue to reside in Sayre.

Quietly Married.  Miss Vera Gleaves and George Spell were united in
marriage at the home of Rev. Wells, near Belmont, last Thursday.  The
bride is a highly respected young lady, a high school graduate, and has
been a telephone operator in this city, where she has many friends.
Mr. Spell is a highly respected young man of the Belmont community, a son
of Mr. And Mrs. John Spell, deceased, pioneer residents of that community.
After a short wedding trip to Kansas City, Missouri, the happy couple will
return to the groom's farm near Belmont, where they will reside.  The best
wishes of a large circle of friends are extended to Mr. And Mrs. Spell for
a long and happy wedded life.

CANNON - BOYD
Wedding Bells are ringing merrily Saturday, October 9th, when Ray Cannon
of Erick and Miss Myrtle Boyd of the Murphy Gin community were united in
the Holy Bonds of matrimony at Sayre, by Rev. Weeks at the Methodist
parsonage.
Mrs. Cannon is a young lady well known in the Murphy Gin community, where
she has resided for several years.  Ray is the oldest son of Mr. And Mrs.
John H. Cannon of Erick and has lived in Erick for the past three years,
is well known and liked by all who know him.  We join their many friends
in wishing them a happy and successful married life.

HESTER - KING
Last Sunday morning at 10 A. M. Orva Hester and Veda King were quietly
married at Rev. A. G. Greer's residence.  Both Mr. And Mrs. Hester are
highly esteemed young folks of the Sunny Slope community.  Mrs. Hester is
the accomplished daughter of Mrs. W. W. Smith, a graduate of Erick High
School and is now teaching at the North Elm School.  Mr. Hester is the
second son of Mr. And Mrs. J. H. Hester.  He is a promising young farmer
of this community.  We are sure the entire community joins in wishing them
success.

Ralph "Bing" Trimble, who has been connected with the Panhandle Herald for
some time past, drove over to Sayre on Sunday last, and when he started to
return to Panhandle took with him one of Sayre's popular young ladies. 
The facts are that "Bing" and Miss Faye Monroe, daughter of Mr. And Mrs.
Ben Monroe, of this city, were quietly married at the Presbyterian
parsonage by Rev. J. T. Means on Sunday afternoon.  Both of these young
people have a wide acquaintance in Sayre, and a large circle of personal
friends will extend their best wishes for their future happiness.

Ray Murphy and Miss Lois Cripps, of the section northwest of this city,
were married at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Tom Lowry on Fourth street, on
Sunday afternoon, Judge Andrews performing the ceremony.

J. W. Woods and Miss Gertrude Martin of Hammon, were married by Judge
Andrews at the residence of Mr. And Mrs. Tom Lowry on Sunday afternoon
last.

Miss Anna Bradley and Mr. Lonnie Sinclair of near Buffalo motored to
Wheeler Saturday where they married.  Both Mr. And Mrs. Sinclair have been
residents of that community for some time, and are well known in Erick. 
They will continue to make their home on the J. M. Bradley place.  We
extend congratulations and very best wishes to the happy couple.

Miss Lorene McLain and Fearless Gallaway were married at the T. J. McElyea
home Saturday night.
Mrs. Gallaway has made her home here for the past four years with her
brother Aubrey McLain.  She has made many friends during that time.
Fearless is the youngest son of Will Gallaway and has spent the greater
part of his life here and is well known.  We join their many friends in
wishing them joy and happiness.

HOLLIS - HERRING
A very popular Erick couple set out on the sea of matrimony Sunday when
Mr. Bob Hollis of the Rolin Cargill Motor Company and Miss Bernice
Herring, Manager of the Erick Credit Bureau bought a marriage license in
Oklahoma and went over to Shamrock, Texas, and tried in vain to get a
minister of the gospel or a justice of the peace to perform a ceremony. 
But they were not to be outdone by such laws as they were not experienced
in.  They returned to Erick the same afternoon and had the Methodist
Pastor, Rev. Hutchinson, pronounce them man and wife.  And now they are
Mr. And Mrs. Hollis, at home to their many friends in the Gray Gibson
residence, where they have a love nest furnished for housekeeping in style
enough that would make many a newlywed weep tears of envy.
Mrs. Hollis is the only daughter of Mrs. Bessie Herring of this city and
as she has been raised from infancy here she needs no introduction to the
people of Erick, for we know her as the likable personage of Bernice.
Mr. Hollis is the parts man of the Rolin Cargill Motor Company and has
been with this firm since its beginning in Erick.  He has many friends
here that extend to he and his bride best wishes for a happy, prosperous
married life and a very Merry Christmas.

SMITH - GARDNER
Mr. George Smith and Miss Lucille Gardner were married Sunday, December
26th, at 2 P.M. at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. And Mrs. W. D.
Gardner, in the presence of a few relatives.
Mr. Smith hold a responsible position with the Dixon Drug Co of Amarillo,
Texas, and his several visits to our city has made him many friends here. 
Mrs. Smith is an Erick girl, and well liked by the entire town and
community, for she is the kind of girl that makes friends and keeps their
friendship.  They left Tuesday to visit a sister in Groom, Texas, then
they go to Amarillo where they will be at home in the Grace Apartments. 
Mr. And Mrs. Smith were childhood sweethearts and this romance was carried
on through their youth.

Miss Testa Mae Roper and Mr. Bonner Wolfe were united in marriage by Judge
Andrews at Sayre, December 22nd.  They were accompanied to Sayre by Miss
Lorene Cupp and Ted Armstrong.  They left Friday to spend Christmas with
Mr. Wolfe's parents at El Reno.

Mr. Ernest Snow and Miss Velma Luman, both of near Erick, were married
