L. Reavis January 8 with only members of the family present. The vows were read by Rev. C. C. Blair of Bethal, Oklahoma. Mrs. Reavis was attired in a green crepe afternoon dress fashioned with a white satin cowl neck. She wore matching accessories. Mrs. Reavis received her education in the Allison school. Marriage licenses issued from the office of Lee Goddard, court clerk, the last day of February and the first days of March dropped to 6 from the previous week's total of 12. (The Sayre Headlight Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 13 Mar 1934): Climaxing a round of pre-nuptial parties was the marriage of Miss Margaret Eloise Martin, daughter of Mrs. F. E. Chappell, 1537 Northwest Twenty-eighth street, to Thurman Wallace Shockley that was solemnized Saturday at 7 p.m. in the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Mitchell, Waco, Texas. The large living room was decorated with vases and baskets of pink rosebuds that, together with the improvised altar of southern amilax and roses, formed an attractive setting for the ceremony. Preceding the reading of the vows by Rev. J. M. Dawson, pastor of the First Baptist church of Waco, Miss Lucile Dunagan sang "At Dawning," accompanied by Mrs. Mitchell who also played "Bridal Chorus" from "Lohengrin" for the processional. The bride, who was given in marriage by her uncle, Mr. Mitchell, was attired in a poudre blue wool traveling suit trimmed in gray fox fur. Her accessories were of gray and she carried an arm bouquet of roses and lilies of the valley. Miss Margaret Osburne, Oklahoma City, was maid of honor. She wore a suit of gray tweed and carried an arm bouquet of pink rosebuds. Only relatives and a few intimate friends of the family were in attendance. Mrs. Shockley is the daughter of the late Sergt. Glenn Russell Martin, who lost his life with the Army of Occupation in Germany in 1915 and a granddaughter of the late J. C. Martin and Mrs. Martin of Sayre. Mr. and Mrs. Martin came to Sayre about 28 years ago and were identified with businesses, social and political life of the county in its infancy. Mrs. Shockley lived here during her early childhood and have a wide circle of friends in Sayre. She has given recitals here on various occasions and is well known in dramatic circles in the state. Mrs. Shockley graduated from the Carroll school for girls in San Antonio and also the Briggs school of expression there. She also attended Oklahoma City university and the university of Oklahoma. Mr. Shockley, formerly of Lucas, Kan., is the son of Mrs. Daisy Tilacy there. He received his education in Emporia, Kan., and now is connected with the Anderson - Kerr Oil Company, the couple will be home in Pauls Valley. The wedding of Miss Gladys Collums, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Collums, Houlka, Mississippi, and Eric Langston of New Orleans, La., was an event of Sunday, May 13, at 9:30 a.m., in the home of her parents. The vows were exchanged before an improvised altar of roses and ferns. Rev. McGregor of the First Baptist church, Houlka, read the ceremony. Mrs. Langston who was unattended, wore a white basketweave swagger suit with a matching white hat and white accessories. She carried a shower bouquet of pink roses and lilies-of-the-valley. Mrs. Langston received her education in the Deram school for girls and graduated from the Houston hospital. For the past year she has been nurse for Dr. H. K. Speed. Mr. Langston is employed by the Public Service company of New Orleans. After May 19, Mr. and Mrs. Langston will be home at 8215 Neron Place, New Orleans. (The Sayre Headlight Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 29 May 1934): Secret Wedding 'Farm Boy Poet' Announced Here. Announcement of the marriage of Leo C. Turner of Sweetwater, known other (sic) the state as Oklahoma's farm boy poet, to Miss Eunice Louise Burns of Chattanooga, was made this week by Rev. and Mrs. J. W. Burns, parents of the bride. The marriage occurred last February but the announce was not made until the close of Mrs. Turner's school at Lone Wolf last week. Mrs. Turner is well known in Beckham county. Her father at one time was pastor of the First Baptist church at Sayre and Mrs. Turner taught in the Sweetwater and Merritt schools. She attended the Baylor College at Baylor, Tex. and received her degree from the Southwestern Teachers college at Weatherford. She is a talented musician. Mr. Turner has lived in Oklahoma since 1901 when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Turner, of Sweetwater, came to Oklahoma from Texas. He was educated at Oklahoma City University, the Oklahoma A. and M. college, the University of Michigan and the Breadloaf School of English. He is known as one of Oklahoma's most promising young poets as the "Oklahoma's farm boy poet." In 1927 he was awarded the young poet's prize for a group of poems entitled "In Oklahoma". Meadows of Tipton announced the marriage of her daughter Miss Dorothy Bennett to Harry Wells, son of Mrs. H. D. Wells of Monitou. The wedding was an event of the winter. Mrs. Wells who graduated from the Tipton high school attended Oklahoma College for Woman and Southwestern State Teachers college where she was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She has been primary teacher in the Berlin schools for the past three years. Following his graduation from Sayre high school, Mr. Wells attended the Texas School of Embalming. he is associated with Litterel-Moore Funeral Home. (The Sayre Headlight Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 2 Jun 1934): Mr. and Mrs. Gibson Will Be at Home After June Tenth. Mrs. Ima Clay Hornbeck of Sunnyvale, California, and E. H. Gibson were married Friday morning at 3 o'clock at his home, 908 North Fourth street, with Judge R. S. Andrews officiating. Mrs. Gibson is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Clay, pioneer residents of western Oklahoma. They came here in an early day and engaged in the mercantile business at Berlin and later moved to Sayre where they lived until their demise a few years ago. Mrs. Gibson was educated in the Sayre public school and Kidd Key college, Sherman, Texas, where she majored in voice and piano. She also studied pipe organ in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Gibson is a graduated of the Missouri university where he received his degree in law. He is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He came to Beckham county in 1906 and engaged in the practice of law at Erick. In 1910 he was appointed county attorney of Beckham county. Later he was elected county judge and during 1917 was appointed adjutant of the state. He served in this office for more than two years and then moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where he engaged in law and oil business. He returned to Sayre about five years ago and established a law office. Mrs. Gibson wore a navy triple sheer suit with three quarter-length swagger coat, trimmed in white, and with blue accessories. Immediately following the ceremony they left for Oklahoma City where they will spend a week visiting friends. They will be at home after June 10th at 908 North Fourth street. Hendry, pastor of the Texola Methodist Church, in the presence of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bills, Mrs. J. L. Harris, and Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Sewell. Mrs. Harris is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bills of Texola. She is a graduate of the Texola High School and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, degree in music at the Oklahoma University, this year. Mr. Harris is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Harris of this city. He received his education from the Texola and Erick schools, graduating from the Erick high school. (The Erick Democrat, Erick, Beckham Co, Ok, 14 Jun 1934): HAMM - McCREERY Miss Melverda Hamm and Bob McCreery stole a march on their friends Saturday and went to Hobart accompanied by Vanelle Dollar, Joe Riley and Billie Riley, where they were quietly married by Judge Thompson. Mrs. McCreery is a nice of Mrs. Sam Douglas, with whom she had made her home for the past year. She is a very talented young lady and has assisted in many programs for several occasions. She is a student of the Erick High School and has been active in many of the school's activities. Mrs. McCreery plans to complete her high school course in Norman. Mr. McCreery is a son of Dr. and Mrs. R. C. McCreery. He graduated from Erick High school in 1930 and attended the University at Norman one year. He also engaged in many of the school activities and was a popular student among the student body. McCreery plans to re-enter the University thiss fall where he will resume his study of law. Both Mr. and Mrs. McCreery are well known to the people of Erick and it was quite a surprise to many to hear of their wedding, but they are at home at present receiving their many friends. An announcement of the engagement and approaching marriage of Miss Charlotte Wellman daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wellman, Shawnee, to Arnold Hohenshelt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hohenshelt, has been made. The wedding will be an event of June 24 in the home of the bride's parents in Shawnee. Miss Wellman is bookkeeper at the Perine building in Oklahoma City. She received her education in the Shawnee schools. Mr. Hohenshelt is employed at the Biltmore Hotel in Oklahoma City. Following his graduation from Sayre high school he attended Oklahoma City university and Oklahoma A. and M. college. A wedding of interest to their friends in Beckham county was that of Miss Charleyne Bryan, daughter of Mrs. Edna Alcott Bryan, 213 South Husband, Stillwater, to Delbert Lee Edgecomb, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Edgecomb, Delhi, which was solemnized Thursday, June 14, at 9:45 a.m. in the home of the bride's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. D. Alcott, Stillwater, in the presence of intimate friends and members of the families. The vows were read by Rev. Lloyd Roach, pastor of the First Christian Church before an altar of palms and ferns, banked with baskets of roses and floor candelabra. Preceding the ceremony, Miss Hazel Donald sang "At Dawning" and "I Love You Truly" accompanied by Mrs. A. B. Alcott, following which the attendants entered to the strains of "Bridal Chourus" from Lohergrin. Mrs. Leslie Alcott, wearing a white organdy flock fashioned on long lines, lighted the candles. Master James Arthur acted as candle bearer. Miss Mary Bryan, sister of the bride, and Miss LeVerne Edgecomb, sister of the groom and sorority sister of the bride, were bridesmaids. They wore pink organdy afternoon dresses with matching accessories and carried nosegays of summer flowers. Miss Alyce Lee Alcott was maid of honor and Mrs. Ralph Hurst as matron of honor were dressed in blue organdy frocks with matching accessories. They carried arm bouquets of pink roses. Mrs. Bryan who was given in marriage by her uncle, A. B. Alcott, wore a gown of white satin and lace fashioned with a formal train. Her veil of tulle had a crown of orange blossoms. Bobby Alice, Elk City, fraternity brother of Mr. Edgecomb, served as best man. Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held for the bridal party and guests. Mr. and Mrs. Edgecomb departed by motor for Washington, D. C., where they will be at home at 1426 K Street, N. W. Mrs. Edgecomb attended A. and M. college where she received her masters degree in 1932. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and an honorary military Major in 1930. For the past two years she has been teaching English inn Erick high school. Mr. Edgecomb is a graduate of A. and M. college. He is a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, Ruf Next Chamber of Commerce, Young Democrats, and Debate and Oratory club. For the past year he has been employed in Washington, D. C., as Labor Advisor for the Shipping section of NRA. Mr. Edgecomb is also studying law in Washington. (The Elk City Journal, Elk City, Beckham Co, Ok, 28 Jun 1934): Smalts-Galloway. A wedding part of interest to their many friends was that of two of Elk City's most popular young people, Miss Vinita Smalts and Gordon Galloway, which took place on Saturday evening, June 23, at 9 o'clock, in the lovely home of Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Ward, former Elk City residents, at Lawton, Oklahoma. Preceding the ceremony, Kenneth Ward sang, "I Love You Truly," accompanied at the piano by Miss Virginia Mae Lawrence, who also played the "Bridal Chorus" from Lohengrin, as the bride entered on the arm of her father, C. H. Smalts. The bride was charming in a blue triple sheer gown with white accessories and carried a bouquet of pink rose buds and lilies of the valley. Her only attendant, Miss Maxine Rumberger, was beautifully gowned in pink crepe with a corsage of gladiolus. The vows were impressively read by Re. Earle L. Stark, past of the Central Baptist church of Lawton. Mr. Galloway had, as his best man, his brother, Arthur Galloway. The only other relatives and friends witnessing the service were: Mrs. Smalts and Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Ward. Following the ceremony Miss Lawrence and Kenneth Ward furnished music during the serving of the wedding cake, after which the couple left for Wichita Falls, Texas. Mrs. Galloway is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Smalts, who formerly lived in Elk City. She was a member of the 1930 graduation class of Elk City high school and is Past Worthy Advisor of the Rainbow and member of the Duo Decum Bridge Club. Mr. Galloway who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Galloway, of Elk City, is a graduate of the high school here and is associated with his father in the Galloway Motor company. The couple will make a trip to Colorado Springs this week after which they will be at home at 505 West Second St., Elk City. (The Sayre Headlight-Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 9 July 1934): Mr. and Mrs. Hohenshelt Spend Honeymoon in the West. The marriage of Miss Charlotte Wellman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy L. Wellman, of Shawnee, and Arnold F. Hohenshelt of Sayre, which was solemnized at the home of the bride's parents, was one of the most interesting of the June weddings in Shawnee. The marriage vows were read by Rev. V. A. Hargis, pastor of the First Methodist church before an improvised altar in the living room. The mantle was banked with shasta daisies and coreposis and ferns. The ring ceremony was read. Miss Wellman was gowned in a lovely long gown of white embroidered organza with a white hat and white accessories and carried an arm bouquet of Briarcliff roses. Following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served the immediate families which was followed by an informal reception for friends of the couple. The cake decorated with a miniature was centered with a two tier-cake bridal party. The first slice was cut by Mrs. Hohenshelt and Miss Ione Holland, maid of honor, then took charge of the service. Mrs. Hohenshelt graduated from Shawnee high school in 1930, and for the past three years she has been employed as secretary to the manager of the Perrine building. Mr. Hohenshelt, who is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hohenshelt, received his education in the Sayre high school and for the past three years, has attended school at A. & M. College, Stillwater, and Central State Teachers College at Edmond. He plans to complete his work at the state university this fall. Mr. and Mrs. Hohenshelt left Sunday evening for a six weeks honeymoon trip to Colorado, Yellowstone Park, the Grand Canyon and California. For traveling Mrs. Hohenshelt chose a smart costume of yellow pique with brown hat, shoes and other accessories. Mr. and Mrs. Hohenshelt will make their home in Oklahoma City. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hickman of the Adventist church in the presence of the bride's family and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Edelen as the only guests. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sands and has grown to womanhood in this community. Mr. Tunnell (sic) is the local manager of the Western Lumber and Hardware Company, having been assigned here for the past two years. Word was received here this week announcing the marriage of Mrs. Elizabeth Price to Eugene Ichorn, which occurred in the home of the bride's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Tubb, at Stillwater, Sunday, Sept. 30. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Brown of Sweetwater, parents of Mrs. Ichorn, were present for the occasion. Immediately following the ceremony the couple left for Denver, Colo., for a two weeks trip. They will return to make their home in Oklahoma City, where Mr. Ichorn is employed as a state salesman for the Wahl Shoe company. Mrs. Ichorn is a sister of Mrs. R. N. Linville, and C. Bradshaw of Pawnee announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Belle to Robert Ray Couch. The wedding will be an event of November 1 at 8:30 p.m. in the First Christian church, Pawnee with Rev. Bradshaw officiating. Miss Bradshaw is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred L. Bradshaw of Sayre. She served as city editor of the Sayre Headlight for several months. Bertwell of Elk City and Loyd Lowry, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Lowry was solemnized Sunday, October 21 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brickell, Cheyenne. The vows were read by Rev. J. Preston Cole, pastor of the First Methodist church, Cheyenne, in the presence of members of the families. The bride who was unattended wore a blue taffeta afternoon dress with silver trimmings. She wore matching blue accessories. Following the ceremony Mrs. Brickell, sister of the groom entertained at dinner. A three tiered wedding cake, topped with a bride and groom flanked by blue tapers formed the centerpiece for the table. The dining room was decorated with baskets of pink roses. Mrs. Lowry is a graduate of the Enid high school. She is also a graduate of the Hazelton School of Beauty in Oklahoma City. Mr. Lowry is a graduate of the Sayre high school. For the past several months he has been employed by the Anthony Dry Goods company. Mr. and Mrs. Lowry will be at home in Sayre. Eleven permits to wed were issued in the office of Lee Goddard, court clerk, during the last three days in October and the first three days in November the records revealed Monday morning. Four of the licenses were issued to county couples and four to couples from Texas. During the entire month of October 56 permits to wed were issued. (The Sayre Headlight Journal, Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 9 Nov 1934): Mr. and Mrs. Crouch Will Be At Home in Bristow After November 15. The wedding of Miss Billie Bradshaw, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. A. J. Bradshaw and Robert Couch (sic) was solemnized Thursday evening, November 1 in the First Christian church, Pawnee, in the presence of a large group of friends and relatives. Baskets of white chrysanthemums and fern were placed around the altar. The vows were read by Reverend Bradshaw under the lattice arch of chrysanthemums. Mrs. Alfred Severs, the organist, playing "Bridal Chorus" from Lohengrim for the processional and Medndelssohn's "Wedding March" for the recessional. As the vows were read, she also played "Ah Sweet Mystery of Life." Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. R. C. Poge of Bristow and Miss Eleanor Thornton sang "Oh Promise Me and At Dawning." The candles were lighted by Miss Louise Cowan of Mangum who wore a rust afternoon dress with matching accessories. Mrs. Harold Teegerstrom attended as maid of honor and wore a yellow crepe afternoon dress with matching hat and hoes. Her bouquet was of tailsman with a matching tulle bow. Miss Redempta Moffett, Miss Hazel Dodson, Miss Bernice Reyburn and Miss Florence Schiek, the bridesmaids were gowned alike in rust crepe afternoon dresses and with those they wore matching turbans. They carried colonial bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums and rust baby breath. The bride who was given in marriage by Dr. C. S. Bates was lovely in a gown of white satin, simply fashioned, with a short train, a cowl neck fitted sleeves. The cap of her waist length tulle veil covering was held in place by a lace chin strap with a small cluster of orange blossoms at each side of the throat. For her "something old" she carried a lace handkerchief. Her bouquet was white roses tied with taffeta ribbon. Frank Couch of Bristow, uncle of the groom served as best man while those serving as ushers were Windell List, Herbert Blain, Ted Dicks and Herman McCollough. After the wedding, Reverent and Mrs. Bradshaw entertained the bridal party and guests at a reception in their home. The rooms were decorated with baskets of chrysanthemums. The table was centered with a five tiered wedding cake topped with a small bride and groom. After Mrs. Couch cut the first piece of cake, Mrs. Teegerstrom presided. The bridesmaids served in the dining room. Mr. and Mrs. Couch will be at home in Bristow, following a wedding trip to points in Mexico and Texas. For traveling Mrs. Couch wore a brown wool suit fashioned with a fur ascot tie and pockets. Her accessories were of brown. Mrs. Couch was graduated from the Fairfax high school and attended Christian college, Columbia, Mo., and Oklahoma A. and M. college. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta at A. and M. Mr. Couch received his education at Boynton. He is employed by the Marathon Refining company in Bristow. The marriage of Miss Hazel Bell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Bell of Hext and Ira Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ace Reed, was an event of Thursday, November 29, in the home of Reverend J. L. Davis. Reverend Davis read the ring ceremony. The attendants were Miss Frances Burnum and Monroe Bell. Mrs. Reed received her education in the Hext schools. She was the school song leader for a number of years. She is also a talented reader. Mr. Reed received his education in the Erick high school. he is an active member of the F. F. A. club and won several state prizes. Mr. and Mrs. Reed are at home in the Heatley community where he is engaged in farming. Brooks, who now reside in Carnegie, and Miss Gilbert Rose, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. D. Rose, Bristow, were united in holy matrimony Sunday, December 16th. The vows were read by the Rev. Lew C. Harris, pastor of the Central Christian church in Waterloo, Iowa. Attendants at the ceremony were Miss Helga Morrison, Waterloo; H. W. Brooks, Des Moines. The bride wore a gown of brown crepe and corsage of yellow roses. Miss Larsen was attired in a peacock blue crepe gown and wore a corsage of Talisman and Sweetheart roses. Mr. Brooks and his bride left immediately after breakfast for Carnegie, Oklahoma. it was announced that the newlyweds will be at home in Waterloo, Iowa, after January 1.
