All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== WILLIAM BENNETT CONDITT William Bennett Conditt was born to James Bennett Conditt and Rebecca Vaden in Smith County, Tennessee July 12, 1846 and died January 21, 1933 in Bryan Co., OK. He is buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery, Roberta, OK He married Elizabeth Malvina Gray, 19 Sept. 1866 in Independence Co., Ark. William Bennett served in the Civil War serving in Brightwell's 7th in Independence Co., Ark. He was captured March 18, 1864 near Batesville, Arkansas. He was sent to Rock Island, Illinois April 6, 1864. William signed an oath of allegiance not to bear arms against the north. While it has been written that he was discharged from Rock Island POW Camp Oct, 18, 1864 almost seven months after being taken prisoner of war and walking home from Rock Island, Illinois to Independence Co., Arkansas that is not true. He enlisted in Co. G 3rd REGT. U.S. Vol. Infantry and was mustered out Oct. 17, 1864 from Rock Island, Illinois. I'm sure he must have suffered greatly while in prison and was a young man of the age 18. From a letter dated March 3, 1992 from the Adjutant General's Office states: From enrollment to June 30, 1865, present Aug. 31, 1865. William B. Conditt absent on detached service as guard on Overland Mail Line. Oct 31, 1865 present mustered out with company Nov. 29, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. "This man at the date of his enlistment in this organization was a Rebel prisoner of war in the hands of the U.S. Mail authorities." Moved to Bryan County before 1810 and operated a small grocery store in Roberta. Sometime after 1880 and 1908 he lost his arm in a threshing machine accident. It is my hope by listing this information to find other family members in the hope of missing information and perhaps photos. I have a picture copied from a photo and copied off onto paper of William in his older years and it is my hope to find some family member who might have one. Other families interested in are: McIntire, Williams and Vinson.
