Marion Hollis Giles married Maggie Emma Truitt. It is not known if they married in Tennesse or Texas. Nor is the accurate spelling of Maggie’s last name known. Maggie was born November 22, 1866 in Texas, Georgia or Missouri. In the 1910 census, Maggie's two sons, Angus and Floyd list their mother as being born in Missouri. In the 1920 census, Angus lists his mother as being born in Texas. Also, in the 1920 census, Floyd lists his mother as being born in Georgia. Marion and Maggie had six children. Maggie was about eighteen when they had their first child, a daughter, Lydia A. Giles was born in April of 1884, location unknown. Their second child, Angus Giles was born May 19, 1892, in Texas. Their sixth child, Floyd Giles was born September 9, 1898, in Texas. About a year and a half later, Eva Belle passed away on January 13, 1900, at the young age of eight. A short year later, on February 16, 1901, Maggie passed away. Marion and Maggie’s youngest child, Floyd was a tender age of two, when his mother passed away. Maggie and Emma both died in Paris, Texas in Lamar County. The cemetary is located on private land in the middle of a field. The death dates for Maggie and Eva Giles came from the cemetery. Ethel Carol was supposedly married about the age of 14 in Paris, Texas in Lamar County... the approximate date would have been abt 1900. Sometime after Maggie’s death in 1901, the Giles family settled in West Burns Run, the settlement was called Coffee's Bend. Lake Texoma did not exist at this time. It was built several years later. Marion, spelled M-a-r-r-a-n, and his two sons, Angus and Floyd were listed on the 1910 census of Oklahoma in Bryan County. They were enumerated on May 5, 1910 as living in part of township five in Bryan county. Marion is listed as a white male, age fifty, born in Tennesse. He is listed as being widowed and having four living children. Both his father and mother are listed as being born in Tennesse. His is listed as being a farmer of a general farm. The farm is listed as being a rented farm. (farm schedule 147) He was able to read, but not able to write. Both of his sons, were listed as farm laborers on a horse farm. Both had attended school at sometime after September 1, 1909. The girls were not listed on the 1910 census. However, both were probably married with families. Since, they would be in their mid twenties. Something Puzzling is the fact that only four of Marion's children were living in the 1910 census. Which means that someone else has passed away. Eva Belle passed away in 1900. It has to be either Lydia or Jessie. Facts currently point to Lydia. Ethel, Floyd and Angus all owned land next to each other. They were all farmers. The main crops grown were peanuts and corn. Angus had fourteen children. Ethel and Floyd lost their land during the prohibition years due to back taxes. Angus was able to keep his land Angus' land is still in the family. His son and grandchildren are still owners of the land that he once owned. When World War began in 1914, Marion would have been fifty-five. The war ended in 1918. January 1920 marks the beginning of the national prohibition. Marion may have been living in Sulphur Oklahoma in the 1920's. The 1920 Oklahoma census lists a M.H. Giles, white male age 61, born in Tennesse living in Sulphur Oklahoma (Murray County) on West Ardmore Ave. Family members recall M.H. Giles had a grocery store in Cartwright, Oklahoma. Then they later moved to Platter, Oklahoma, where he had a grocery store there. Marion was of Baptist faith. He lived through the hard times of the dust bowl years of the 1930's in Oklahoma. Marion Hollis Giles died in Cartwright, Oklhaoma in 1942 at the ripe old age of about ninety. At the time of his death he was staying with his daughter Ethel. He died during the middle of World War II. He is buried in the Garden of Memory Cemetery in Colbert, Oklahoma. Buried next to him is his son, Floyd and his wife, Florence Giles.
