The funeral home was originally known as Holmes Furniture, Hardware and Undertaking. It was founded in 1898 by George Washington Holmes. The original location was at Third and Main. The funeral home is presently located at Third and Beech. The new funeral home was built in 1923 by George Holmes' sons, Jack and Howard Holmes, upon the transfer of ownership of the funeral home. In 1953, Jack Holmes took over the operation of the funeral home. He ran the funeral home with his son, John Holmes, until the 1970's. John Holmes died in 1977, and Jack Jr., who was in his 60s and had no other family members interested in the business, sold the business to James Dalton in 1979. Thus, bringing about a name change to Dalton- Holmes Funeral Home. James Dalton was a 25-year-old licensed funeral director, native to Bryan county. Mr. Dalton continues to operate the business today. Jack Holmes Jr., passed away in 1986.
