When work started on the Denison dam in 1939, a work camp was set up what was to be the north end of the dam. This area grew as workmen put up shanties and moved in trailers. Some permanent homes came in, but from the outset, the town flourished as a beer oasis. The town was named after Wilburn Cartwright, a former U.S. Congressman. Cartwright is located on the Red River between Denison, Texas and Durant, Oklahoma, at the north end of the Denison dam on Lake Texoma and three and one half miles west of Colbert, Oklahoma. The first store in town was built by Carter and Webb. Then there was the Rind grcoery, the Harrison grocery, the Brown grocery and the Townsend grocery. Some of Cartwrights early residents were, Massey, Holder, Hudgens, Siler, Tod, Reeves, Owens, Townsend, Carter, Mahan, Gardner, Trotter, Burks, Hartline, Renolds, Sanders, Hattensty, Brown, Nichols, Thomas, Dalton, McEwin, Reese, Hargis, Rind. These are only a few. Some people are under the misconception that Cartwright was formerly called Mulberry. This is not true. The town of Mulberry was innundated by Lake Texoma. ------------------------------------------------------------ Written by Lynda Stout Massey
