Thursday, September 18, 2003 Durant Daily Democrat Thelma Akin, 97 A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery for Thelma Akin, 97, Durant, who died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma. Dr. J. M. Gaskin will officiate. She was born Saturday, July 28, 1906, in Pilot Grove, Texas, to William Henry Perkinson and Mary Melissa Ross, and came to Durant before her first birthday. She attended St. Xavier Academy in Denison, Texas, and graduated from Durant High School in 1924. She also attended Southeastern State College and Mary Harden Baylor College in Belton, Texas. She married Clay U. Akin in 1932 in Tishomingo. She was a florist with Wilson Ross Flowers and Gifts for many years. She was involved with Rainbow Girls, Campfire Girls, Kings Daughters and Business and Professional Women, where she was Woman of the Year and District Director. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on May 7, 1980, and one grandchild.
