All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Durant Daily Democrat 10 Sep 2005 Wanda Brownfield Wanda Brownfield passed from this life Sept. 2, 2005, in Dallas, Texas. Born Wanda Faye Stephens in Russellville, Ark., Sept. 21, 1923 to Bessie Morphis and Eulis Wiburn Stephens. Wanda met and married Laddie Lynn "Ladd" Brownfield in 1940. They met her while she was working in a Woolworth's store in Lubbock, Texas. Needless to say, "their song" jokingly became, "I Found A Million Dollar Baby (In A Five and Ten Cent Store)." Ladd was called to service into the US Marine Corps and saw active duty in the South Pacific in World War II. About 1949 Ladd and Wanda bought a ranch near Durant and lived there till his death in 1951. In life her husband was always her one and only true love. His death did not diminish her love and respect for him. Everyone who knew either one believes their love continues after death. Her parents moved to the ranch, operating it for her, after Ladd's death. She lived in Brownfield, Texas, and at their ranch. In 1962 her parents died and were buried in Durant. She then took over running the ranch until she sold it in '98, then moved back to Brownfield until 2001, when she moved to California. In 2005 she was moved to Dallas from California as she needed full time care and wanted to be closer to her family. While in California and Oklahoma, her neighbors exhibited true "Christian generosity," helping and caring for her. Wanda's family is grateful to them all. To know Wanda was to love her. She was preceded in death by her brother Truman Levoyd Stephens and a nephew Michael Stephens. Wanda is survived by her son Stephen Lynn and his wife Leta Raquel, Van Alstyne, Texas, her son Richard Ladd Colorado Springs, Colo.; her grandchildren Jonathan, Lee, Sean, and Jennifer Brownfield, and two great- grandsons, all living in the Dallas area; sister Mary and husband Bill Nokes, Plains, Texas; sister-in-law Jane Brownfield Shirley, Lubbock; and an abundance of nephews, nieces and cousins, all of who loved her dearly. She will be fondly remembered for her kindness, her pioneer spirit, her love of children, and her generosity and support of those she cared about. Her ashes will be buried alongside her husband Laddie Lynn, at a graveside service in Brownfield, Texas, at a date to be announced. Rather than flowers the family asks you send a donation in her name to the American Cancer Society. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Bryan County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/bryan/bryan.htm
