In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Caddo United Methodist Church. Rev. Randa Norman will officiate. Margaret Griggs Freeny, born Monday, Nov. 28, 1898, at Stuart in Indian Territory, Choctaw Nation. Maggie and her late husband, Homer Michael Freeny, both were born on the same date and year, and were married 20 years to the day later. Both were members of the Choctaw tribe and had great pride in their Indian history and heritage. As a mother and homemaker, she had four children: Keotah, who died in 1990; Robert Clay, who passed in 2004; Ida Price, who died in 2004; and Homer Michael Freeny, of Bakersfield, Calif. She has 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Freeny has transcended a century of change. In those 106 years, she had seen changes from arrows to atoms; from horse-drawn carriages to computers; from traveling on horseback with her children to travel on Boeing 747s. Maggie has celebrated all aspects of life from the joy of birth as a mother, a midwife in early statehood and in death as a pallbearer at a Caddo man's funeral. A very important part of her early life was as a highly respected teacher in rural schools around Caddo. She inspired young people to set higher goals, and as such her legacy will live forever. Maggie was truly a remarkable woman as attested to by her many achievements in life and supported by commentary from her many students, peers, friends and beloved family members. Maggie lived in Caddo and was a lifelong member of the Caddo Methodist Church. She loved raising kids and a garden. She enjoyed painting and writing poems. The family will be receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Clay Freeny, John Freeny, Bill Hasse, J.V. Edwards, Stuart Freeny, Utah Nation, A.L. Huggins and Dave Szenasi. Dalton-Holmes Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at dhfh@communicomm.com. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Bryan County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/bryan/bryan
