Thursday, October 16, 2003 Durant Daily Democrat James LaVin Hines James LaVin Hines was born December 6, 1910 in Madill, Oklahoma, having been the third child of James Moses and Chassie Bradberry Hines. His parents and five siblings: Everette, Lillie Mae Hines, Lucille Leach, J.D. and Kenneth Hines all preceded in him death. LaVin graduated from Madill High School in 1929 and worked at various jobs, including one at Munster, Texas, in the oil fields, before volunteering for the United States Navy on December 19, 1941, World War II, where he attained the rank of Storekeeper 1st class, and was honorably discharged on September 25, 1945, after having served in four major battles. On November 28, 1946, he was married to Clara Mae Williams, also of Madill, where he was serving as Assistant County Tax Assessor. In 1947, he and Clara moved to Maysville, Oklahoma, where the both of them were employed by the Warren Petroleum Corp. He was working as Plant Chemist upon his retirement in 1975. LaVin had been in ill health for the past few years, and on January 1, 2003, he suffered a stroke. Since that time he has been in several hospitals and nursing homes. For the past several months LaVin has been in Arkansas Hospice Hospital in North Little Rock, Arkansas, where his and Clara"s son, Phil and wife, Donna, live and have assisted with the managing of his health care. LaVin was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Maysville for the past 53 years, where he has served in several capacities.
