He passed away, January 7, 2011, at the age of 68. A celebration of life will be held Friday, April 22 at 2 p.m. in the Rose Chapel officiated by Ken Bibb. Condolence can be mader online www.whineryfs.com. Jim grew up in Sayre where he graduated from High School in 1960. He graduated from Sayre Junior College before receiving his Mortuary Service Degree from Gupton Jones Institute in Dallas, Texas. Jim worked for Rose Chapel Funeral Service in Sayre and managed Rose Chapel Funeral Service in Sentinel. He married his college sweetheart, June Stamper at Sayre on September 6, 1963. Jim returned to college and received his Business Adminidstration Degree from Southwestern State College in Weatherford. He entered the United States Army Reserve and served his country during the Vietnam Conflict. He later worked at Brown's Funeral Home in Chickasha, Oklahoma, and in 1969 he began a career with Phillips Petroleum that spanned 29 years that included six years in Norway working in the North Sea as a Safety and Environmental Engineer. After his retirement he worked as a private contractor on the North Slope of Alaska. Jim loved riding his BMW motorcycle and spent numerous trips with his friends known as the "Spirit Riders." Although he wasn't a pilot, Jim loved flying with his friends and even traveled with the Flying Farmers to Austrailia and had recently traveled to the Oshkosh AirVenture. Jim had volunteered numerous hours to the Sayre Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in the restoration of their 1923 LeFrance Fire Truck, "Huldy," that is now on exhibit at Sayre's Sortgrass Museum. He was a member of the NRA and was committed to conservaztion values. On Friday, Jim would always be seen with his buddies at the "breakfast club." He is survived by his wife, June; two brothers, Martin Neal Hartpence, Sayre and Ray Kim Hartpence, Cheyenne; two sisters-in-law, Frances Summers, Oklahoma City, and Pegghy Schmidt, Hydro, Oklahoma; a niece and nephew, Tonya and Greg, and several other relatives and many friends.
