All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Sunday, August 3, 2003 Durant Daily Democrat Wanda Jean McCord, 62 Wanda Jean McCord, 62, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at St. Vincent General Hospital in Leadville, Colo. She was born Aug. 10, 1940, in Durant to the late Claude J. and Jewell J. (Harvill) Morrison. 'Jean,' as she was known, graduated from Durant High School in 1958 and then went on to receive her teaching degree from Southeastern State University. She later went back to school and received her master's degree in elementary education from Adams State College. She taught for two years in Longmont and two years at Columbine Elementary before moving to Leadville in 1965. She became a third-, fourth- and seventh-grade math teacher for the Lake County School District, teaching at both West Park Elementary and Lake County Intermediate School. She met Kenneth McCord in Leadville and they married Dec. 23, 1967, at the First Christian Church in Longmont. It would be an understatement to say she held a high regard for education. She valued each of her students and taught them values and ethics. To her, education did not end with the 'Three R's.' She was a mentor to teachers and enjoyed listening to their ideas and opinions. She loved to travel and loved trips with students to New York City and Washington, D.C. She was a member of both the Colorado and National Councils of Teachers of Mathematics. She belonged to the National, Colorado and Lake County Education Association, of which she was past president. She was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority in college, and later became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She took pride in keeping her house clean. She was an accomplished seamstress and sewed all her own clothes and her sister's wedding gown. She was also a gifted painter. Her husband and family will always smile when they think about the organized life she lived, but what they will remember most is the generosity with which she led her life. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of the home; his sons Brian T. McCord and wife Sarina, Phoenix, Ariz., and Kevin R. McCord and wife Bridget, Beaverton, Ore.; children Sarah and Jonathan McCord; sisters Darlene Fuehrer and husband LeRoy, Aurora, Colo., and Hazel Morgan and husband Neal, Red Oak.; friends Jean and Calvin Dawe and Diane and Orlando Martinez, all of Leadville, numerous cousins, 'adopted kids' and other relatives. Services are at 1 p.m. today at First United Presbyterian Church, Leadville. The Rev. Frances McWilliams will officiate. Joan Dawson will sing, accompanied by Lynette Booth. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with pallbearers Brian and Kevin McCord, Orlando Martinez, Steve Campbell, Fred Avi and John Dawe, followed by a reception on the church basement. Bailey Funeral Home, Leadville, is handling arrangements. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Bryan County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/bryan/bryan.html
