Friday, December 5, 2003 Durant Daily Democrat Bill Hoard Orr, 89 A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery for Bill Hoard Orr, 89, who passed from this life Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at the Medical Center of Southeastern Oklahoma. He was born Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1914, in Sherman, Texas, to Harry Earl and Lillie (Porter) Orr, who settled in Grayson County after the war between the states. He attended rural school until ninth grade and graduated Sherman High School in 1933. He played football from 1930 to 1932, Sherman Letters Assoc. for 1932 and 1933, Student Council Rep. for 1933, F.F.A. from 1931 to 1933 and president and most popular boy in 1933. He attended Southeastern Teachers College 1933-1937, Lettering four years in college football. He received his MS degree in 1951 from Oklahoma State University, New Mexico State University, Eastern New Mexico University and Western Washington State. He received certificates for superintendent, principal, counselor and teacher. In 1937-1942 in Broken Bow he taught sixth grade and was assistant coach two years, taught social studies and was assistant coach three years in junior high. In 1942-1957, he served as high school principal 15 years, head football coach eight years, girl’s basketball for 10 years, boys’ basketball for two years, acting superintendent on three different occasions and directed efforts to achieve north central accreditation. In 1957-1960, he was the dean of instruction and social science professor at Murray State College in Tishomingo. In 1960-1966 in Alamogordo, N.M., he was high school counselor and teacher. He was acting director and counselor in Alamogordo Community College. In 1966-1970 at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls, he served as counselor, Dean of Admissions and Psychology and Education Professor. In 1970-1976 as the Chairman of the Education Dept. he taught graduation classes for Idaho State Extension. From 1976-1979 in Idabel, he was the first director of higher learning center in McCurtain County (Junior College offering programs from Southeastern State, Carl Albert and Eastern Oklahoma State.) He retired in 1979 in Durant. In 1995 he was one of the first elected into Broken Bow School Hall of Fame. He was a member of State Education Association of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Idaho, as well as the National Education Assoc. He was a member of the Broken Bow Masonic Lodge No. 441 and Lions Club of Broken Bow for 25 years and was president from 1946-47. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He loved to travel, visiting the World’s Fair in Spokane, Wash., all states west of the Mississippi, and also Canada and Mexico. He married Grayce Lee (Peacock) June 23, 1940, in Broken Bow. His love was his family and educating others. He was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, brothers Colquitt and Lee Orr, and sister Dela Ford. Family hour is 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
