Thursday, September 4, 2003 Durant Daily Democrat John Pennell, 72 Services are pending with Coffey-Murray Funeral Home for John Pennell, 72, Kenefic, who died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at his residence. ========== Friday, September 5, 2003 Durant Daily Democrat John Odle Pennell, 73 A service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hopewell Freewill Baptist Church, Kenefic, for John Odle Pennell, 73, Kenefic, who died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at his residence. Minister Van Newton, Rev. Doug McClure and Bro. Bruce Crawford will officiate. He was born Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1930, in Tom Bean, Texas, to Paul and Leta (Odle) Pennell. He married Betty Jo Wells, Oct. 17, 1948, in Sherman, Texas. He served in the U.S.Navy. He was elected Lea County, N.M. Sheriff in a landslide upset, then served an unopposed second term. He was voted Lea County Citizen of the Year in 1963. He moved to the Hugo area in 1969 and served on the hospital board and 10 years on the Grant school board. He moved to Kenefic in Nov., 2000. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 46, Lovington, N. M., National Sheriff's Association, Cattlemen's Association and Shoals Baptist Church, Hugo. He was a retired rancher. He was preceded in death by his parents. Burial will be in Center Hill Cemetery with pallbearers Tye Pennell, Keith Testerman, Mike Testerman, Joe Tuttle, David Roberts and Ben Bob Mills. Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Mauldin, Tommy Price, Micky Pettit, Curt Testerman, Warren Custer, Dr. Al Fountain, Gerald Bell, Shawn Scott and Dwain Turner. Family hour is 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
