The son of Troy Ed and Norine Louise (Heflin) Shackleford, he was born on a farm and ranch near Albany Dec. 29, 1938. A life-ling Bryan County resident and a brick layer, Don has an older brother, Billy, who is a top bull and bareback rider, and a sister Linda who is one of his biggest fans. Don started rodeoing at the early age of 12 and winning in the bull riding contest the very first time he entered in Caddo. The highlight of Don’s career was winning the bull riding at the Houston Fat Stock Show and Rodeo in 1957 –winning $1,870 on one bull and the next year, placing high in the bull riding in the rodeo at Madison Square Gardens, New York City. Don’s ambition is to make your Rodeo at Burns Run the biggest weekly Friday night rodeo of its kind in the world along with the help of Mr. C. T. Bridges, the owner and operator of Burns Run Resort. Preceding him in death were his parents.
