All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Gracelawn Cemetery--Edmond OK Durant Daily Democrat 7 Mar 2005 Jan (Park) Pokorny Steele Jan Pokorny Steele passed away following a valiant battle with cancer on February 28, 2005, at Mercy Hospital. Jan was born February 4, 1936, in Durant to Everett and Vivian Park. Following high school in Durant she attended Tulsa University when she married Arthur E. Pokorny and began her family. Arthur preceded her in death in 1972. In 1982 she married Stanley K. Steele and they have resided in Edmond since. Jan Pokorny Steele was on the music faculty at the University of Central Oklahoma from 1969 through 2000. Mrs. Steele's education included degrees from the University of Tulsa, and University of Central Oklahoma, and doctoral studies at the University of Oklahoma. Mrs. Steele was active as an adjudicator for the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association and was on the Board of Judges for the American College of Musicians. She was a past president of the Oklahoma City Pianists Club, former chairman of the Edmond Arts & Humanities Council, founder and executive director of the Chopin Society of Mid-America. In 1996, she was inducted into the Edmond Hall of Fame by the Edmond Chamber of Commerce, and in 1995 she was a recipient of a Governor's Arts Award sponsored by the Oklahoma State Arts Council. Her other numerous awards include Outstanding Woman of the Year Award from the Edmond Women's Club for her contribution to the Arts, and an award from the Edmond Historical Society as a citizen making an impact in the community. Mrs. Steele is survived by her husband Stan of the home; mother, Vivian L. Park of the home; daughter Jana and son-in-law Mike Hightower, grandson Grayson and granddaughter Ashlyn of Sallisaw; daughter Kara and son-in-law Robb Luschen, granddaughters Lyndsey, Rachel, and Emily of Edmond; sister and brother-in-law Mark and Cindy Ellis with nephews Jason and Jonathan of San Antonio, Texas. Included with survivors are many friends and former students. Jan would ask that memorials be made to the Chopin Society of Mid-America, P. O. Box 5272, Edmond, OK 73083. Services were conducted by Baggerley Funeral Home and First Christian Church at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 2, 2005 in Edmond. Interment followed in Gracelawn Cemetery.
