Self, 93, passed away Jan. 13, 2007. Mr. Self was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Bryan County, Okla. He moved to Durant, Okla., and attended school there. After he got out of college, he was a teacher in a little country school house in Oklahoma. He went into the Navy for four years during World War II. He married Ouida Mayberry on March 26, 1944, in Durant, Okla. After he returned from the service, he went back to school and received his masters in 1951. In 1959, they moved to Stockton and, in 1960, they moved to Napa. Mr. Self taught for many years at Redwood Middle School. In the summer, he taught summer school at Napa High School and, for 16 years, he taught English two nights a week and Napa Valley College. After his retirement, he volunteered at Salvador School and would read to the children. He was a member of the Shepherd Church and the Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Self is survived by his wife, Ouida, of Napa; two daughters, Nancy Geharts and her husband, Robert, of Hillsboro, Ore., and Sally Estes of Napa; a son, Johnny Self, and his wife, Barbara, of Napa; grandchildren Brett Self and his wife, Tracy Reeves, Casey Self and his partner, Debbie, Leif Estes and his partner, Mira, Larry Estes and his partner, Sonia, James “Josh” Godfrey and his wife, Kasi; and great-grandchildren Sierra, Emma Self, Airanna Self and Erik, Sean and Liam Godfrey. Memorial service will be held Jan. 21 at 11:30 at La Siesta Village Mobile Home Park club house, 4433 Solano Ave., Napa. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shepherd Church, P.O. Box 3269, Napa, CA 94558. Arrangements are under the direction of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, Napa.
