Durant Daily Democrat Tuesday, March 2, 2004 Woodrow ‘Woody’ Smith, 87 A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Cemetery for Woodrow ‘Woody’ Smith, 87, Durant, who died Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at Grace Living Center in Jenks. The Rev. Herb Bridgewater will officiate. The son of E. M. and Maggie (Powell) Smith, he was born Friday, June 16, 1916, in Caddo. A longtime resident of Bryan County, Smith was a teacher. He was a graduate of Southeastern State College at age 17. At age 19, he was the youngest superintendent of schools in Oklahoma. He served as a professional executive of Boy Scouts of America in Oklahoma, Texas and California 25 years. Smith was the development director for Bay Area Red Cross in Oakland, Calif. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, and a 32nd degree Mason, serving in Oklahoma, Texas and California. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Durant. Smith enjoyed gardening and landscaping. He married Gaylene Reynolds May 20, 1928, in Wolf Creek. Preceding him death were his parents and son Mike Smith.
