All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Whitlock, Mildred Seigler 1919 - 2005 Mildred Seigler Whitlock, 86, beloved sister, aunt, teacher and friend, passed from this life into eternal life in heaven with our Lord and Savior on Monday, May 2, 2005, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Funeral: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Arlington Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Greg Deering officiating. Burial: Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington. Open visitation: Tuesday at Arlington Funeral Home. Mildred was born Jan. 24, 1919, to Homer and Myrtle Seigler on a farm near Bennington, Okla. As soon as she was old enough, she began helping her family with work on the farm. She walked five miles each day to attend school in Bennington and became a proud graduate of Bennington High School in 1938. She worked part time while attending Southeastern State University in Durant, Okla. where she received a bachelor of science degree in 1945. Her teaching career began at Jackson, a small two-teacher school near Bennington where she taught grades one through four in the same classroom. After continuing her teaching career in Hendrix, Bennington and Bokchito, Okla., she moved to California in 1952, where she taught first grade in the Downey and Paramount school districts. While in Downey, she met the love of her life, Master Sgt. Glenn Whitlock, who was stationed at George Air Force Base near Riverside, Calif. They were married in Quartzsite, Ariz., on Nov. 27, 1952. Mildred taught school on the base until her husband was transferred to Chambley Air Base near Metz, France. Soon after she joined him there, the base commander asked Mildred to start a kindergarten for children of the Air Force personnel stationed there. She established the school and taught there for four years until Glenn was transferred back to the United States. Moving with him, Mildred continued to teach on base at the new assignment, Plattsburgh Air Force Base in New York, and at a later assignment at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M. When her husband retired from the Air Force in 1964, they moved to Arlington. Glenn worked at Southwest Aeromotive in Dallas until his death in 1971, and Mildred continued to teach at day-care facilities in the Arlington area. They were both members of University Baptist Church in Arlington. Mildred loved teaching little children. She never had any children of her own, but she touched and influenced the lives of those she taught. She also loved to travel and was fortunate enough to see much of Europe while living in France. She loved her family and cherished the time spent with them. She loved visiting with her friends and, in her later years, playing bingo at the nursing home. She made lifelong friends wherever she lived and was one of those people who truly never met a stranger. The family extends heart-felt thanks and gratitude to the staffs of the Oakwood Nursing Home and Vitas Hospice for their devoted and loving care of Mildred during her last years and days. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband in 1971; her parents; and a brother, Charles Seigler.
