CADDO COUNTY, OKLAHOMA - 1940 YEARBOOK, FORT COBB SCHOOLS File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Faculty of Fort Cobb Schools listed in "The Gay Forties", the 1940 Yearbook Fort Cobb, Caddo County, Oklahoma Yearbook staff member for Faculty, Carlis Johnson transcribed July 1997 by Megan Zurawicz comments/corrections in brackets [] by transcriber William Copeland (superintendent, math, girls92 basketball/softball) William Copeland was born in Howard, Kansas, and moved to a farm twelve miles from Kingfisher when he was one year old. He attended high school at Kingfisher and Guthrie, received his Bachelors degree at Edmond, and his Master of Education degree at the University of Oklahoma. He was brought to this school five years ago [1935] when a swap was made with the school at Lookeba. He is the originator of the trips made by the senior classes each spring. The first year the class went to Carlsbad Caverns; the next year was to Carlsbad and through the points of interest throughout Texas. Then came the trip to the Nation92s capitol; then the next year to New York World's Fair. This year again to Washington. He has coach ed baseball. He is the girls92 basketball coach and is coaching track this year. He likes all sports and goes into all of them to win. He has been the senior sponsor for several years. He has two daughters, Patty Ann and Billy Kay, and just one wife, Edythe, with whom he expects to board from now on. Pete Gillet (7th grade) Mr. Pete Gillet was born in Fort Thompson, South Dakota, September 21, 1917. He moved to Anadarko when he was only two years old. His elementary education was received at Anadarko, Oklahoma. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Central State Teachers College. While at Edmond he had the lead in an operetta, was on the quartet for two years. Mr. Gillet now teaches the seventh grade. We know he can sing for under disguise at the stunt night he proved that he has talent. John Kusel (vocational agriculture, FFA) Mr. John Kusel was born March 9, 1914, in Big Horn, Wyoming. He attended grade and highschool at Sheridan, Wyoming; college at the University of Wyoming and Oklahoma A & M. While he was in college he was a member of the Lamb[d]a Delta Gamma. In highschool he was a member of the State Championship judging team and a member of the National Championship Livestock judging team; in college he was a member of the International Livestock judging team. He was student president of the agricultural college in Wyoming. His ambition is to raise a bunch to beat Spencer92s Big Leaguers. Eugene Lamm (principal, English, boys92 glee club) Mr. Eugene Lamm was born at Okemah, Oklahoma, and just to keep us guessing, said the 91blessed92 event occurred after the gay 9092s about 20 years. He attended grade school near Okemah, and finished highschool in Okemah; he attended college at the University of Oklahoma at Norman. While at Norman he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and also belonged to President Bizzell92s Honor Class. His life (says he) is just one long moment of happiness. He hates politicing politicians; and says his pet peeve is Willful and indolent ignorance. He hopes to receive his Master of Arts degree next summer. [1941] He is principal of the high school and directs the Boys Glee club. Blanche McClure (2nd grade) Blanche McClure was born in Oklahoma, we think! She attended high school in Anadarko and after graduation entered college at Central State Teachers College. She has lived on a farm all her life and says she is a good farmer. She is now teaching the second grade. Her ambition is to be a successful writer and to learn to ride a bicycle. She also wants to make enough money to travel all over the world and at the same time write her stories. Miss McClure likes good movies and good poems. She likes to ride horses. Fannie Meek (3rd grade) Mrs. Fannie Nelms Meek was born in Texola, Oklahoma, June 21, 1917. She attended grade school and high school at Texola, and was valedictorian of her graduating class. Allen Moore (history/manual training) Mr. Allen Moore was born in Dewey County, Territory of Oklahoma, March 3, 1905. He attended rural school somewhere in Dewey County and high school at Lenora. He started teaching in 1925. In 1936 he entered college at Northwestern State Teachers College and in the spring of 1939 received his Bachelor of Science degree. Mr. Moore says, "I have no hobby nor ambition; I only have two children and am not divorced." He is a realist and says he is probably too much so. This is the first year he has been with the schools here, where he teaches manual training and history. Eda Obert (typing, business English, American lit, journalism) Miss Eda Obert was born December 8, in Donna, Texas, just north of the Border. She attended grade school in the country in Missouri; highschool at Southwest City, Missouri; college at Nashville, Tennessee, at Peabody College. After spending one year at Nashville, she heard what fine colleges Oklahoma had and enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. Many things happened to Miss Obert while in college, but she thinks the main events were her living on five hours of sleep out of twenty-four, and her learning to swim. Her ambition is to learn to ride a bicycle down a hill without putting on the brake, and then riding back up the hill under her own power! She likes people, places, books, all sports, all music well done. And she also loves Fort Cobb and gardening. She gets disgusted at machinery that won't work. Idella Rice (4th/5th grades) Miss Idella Rice was born in Decatur, Tennessee, March 11, 1916. She attended school at Edmond and while there she belonged to a number of different clubs. She was the corresponding secretary of the Shakespeare Club, president for one semester of Les MetiE9re or Art Club, and a member of the Lasso Stirrup, a pep club. Her greatest ambition is to be a perfect teacher (if there is such a thing). She also wants to be a dress designer, to ride in the engine of a train, and to be an air hostess. Nadine Smith (public speaking, music theory, grade music, girls92 glee club) Miss Nadine Smith was born in Manchester, Oklahoma so long ago that she just doesn't remember when. She attended grade and high school at Manchester. She received her college training at Oklahoma College for Women, Chickasha; Central State Teachers College, Edmond; and graduate work at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. She has a Bachelor of Music degree. While she was in high school she was on the Oklahoma Honor Roll for four years and valedictorian of her graduating class. She has directed the Girls Glee club for the past two years. Alita Spencer (5th/6th grades) Mrs. Alita Applewhite Spencer was born at Oney, Oklahoma, in March 1918. She attended school at Oney until she completed high school then she started to Southwestern State Teachers College at Weatherford. She will receive her degree this summer. She is now teaching the fifth and sixth grades; she says her hobbies all come under the one head of house keeping. Her ambition is to be a better school teacher. She got in a hurry for Leap Year to go into effect so she popped the question and received a husband last December. Boyd Spencer (science, algebra, boys92 basketball/baseball) Mr. Boyd Spencer was born January 4, 1913, at Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He attended grade school at Kingfisher; high school at Big 4 Consolidated High School; college at Edmond, Oklahoma. He really must have been a "go-getter" when he was in highschool for he was valedictorian of his class. In college he was on the Honor Roll; belonged to the Arena Debating Club, and Spur Pep Club, and he was a letterman and captain of the baseball team. His hobbies are hunting, fishing, basketball, football, baseball, and all other sports. His ambition is to raise a football eleven, a baseball nine, a basketball quint, or maybe a boxer. His pet peeve is Lazy Students. Loleet Stinson (vocational home economics, FHO) Miss Loleet Stinson was born in Brown County, Texas. She attended school in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. while in the different colleges she belonged to the various Home Economics clubs. She began teaching here in 1939.
