SKELTON Smothers as Workmen Try To Reach Him Entombed for 20 Minutes: Workmen call for Help Cyrus Skelton, ex-service man age 31 came to a sudden death by suffication Tuesday afternoon when he was caught in an avalanche of dirt on state highway No.41, four miles east of town. Skelton, Childers, Earp and C. Jones were building a bridge on the highway and Skelton was digging the trench for the abutment and was about four feet deep when the other side of the bank which extended up something like twelve or fourteen feet gave way and crushed him. Kerbo saw the slide when it started and shouted a warning but the falling earth was to fast and caught Skelton as he was making a leap for safety. Childers and Kerbo set to work in an endeavor to rescue him, Jones and Earp having just left with a truck for town for material and at the time of the accident was still in sight of the bridge, but could not be haled. Childers said with only towo to work, he soon realized it a hopeless case to save him, so left Kerbo working and rushed to the nearest telephone and called for help. Dr. Hawn, R. L. Eldridge and others rushed to the scene of the accident and with Childers after removing about four and one-half feet of dirt reached the civtun of the accident. Dr. Hawn administered medical and did everything in his power to revive him, but due to the fact that he had been entombed for something like twenty minutes, it was impossible. The body was brought to the family home here in the West part of town and held for funeral services, which were held Thursday afternoon at the high school auditorium. Rev J. J. Strutton, minister of the Baptist Church officiating. The local American Legion in charge. Internment in the Binger cemetery. He leaves to mourn his death, his mother, two brothers, two sisters, two aunts and a host of friends.
