Clayton, 75, Portland, Oregon, will be in the Alfalfa cemetery at 2:30 p.m., Thursday. A former resident of the Alfalfa community, he was a brother of E.L. Clayton of Carnegie. He was stricken and died unexpectedly about 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 as he left his business office to take a bus to his home. Born near Solomon, Kansas July 15, 1897, Clayton came with his parents to the Alfalfa community in 1901. After Army service in WW I, he moved to Portland in 1921 where he established himself as a commercial artist. He worked in the same art and engraving plant until his death. One of his first cartoons, "Going to the Carnegie Fair," was printed in The Carnegie Herald when he was a grade school boy at Alfalfa. Years later he designed and engraved The Herald's present nameplate, considered one of the most distinctive in the state. --------------------------------------------------------------------
