They were firm beliefs to live by. He exhibited strong faith in his country, his friends, his family, and his God by being extra protective, fiercely loyal, loving, and generous. He always gave to others, often denying himself. John William Calder, the first of 5 children, was born May 24, 1924 in Apache, OK to Ivan Leo Calder and Edith Elizabeth Lowry. He passed away on Dec. 13, 2002, at the age of 78. He attended Alden Grade School and High School, graduating in May 1941. He joined the C.C.C. Camp for the years of 1941-42. In 1944, he became a destroyer radio man 3rd class in the U.S. Navy serving in the Pacific area on 3 different destroyers, among Them the USS Mugford and USS Gleaves. The years 1946-1950 brought John to Oklahoma A&M University, graduating with a degree in Physical Science. After graduation, he received an infantry commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He Went on active duty with the 45th division at Camp Polk, Hokkaido, Japan, and Korea. He later was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. After the Korean War, he met Evelyn Morton Dines. They married on May 30, 1953. Together they lived over 49 years of agreeing and disagreeing, raising 3 children, enjoying travel, reading, sailing, and fishing (he on the hot, sandy bank and she in the cool cottage reading). John worked for Sinclair Oil & Gas as a geologist in Tulsa and OKC from 1952-69. He established a partnership with Trigg Drilling from 1969-83. Becoming an independent oilman in 1983, he continued his pursuit of geology until his death. During his last years, he particularly enjoyed attending many Navy and Army reunions of the 45th Infantry division, the 279th Infantry regiment, and the Geronimos. He was intelligent, inquisitive, and a good listener. He had many friends and 'drop-ins for coffee' visitors at his office. He will be greatly missed. We all loved him very much. John was preceded in death by his parents, son Steven Calder, and two brothers, Dale and Jimmy Calder. He is survived by his wife Evelyn, son Donald Dines and wife Julie of Edmond, daughter Carol Dines of Muskogee; grandchildren Courtney Morris and husband Mike of OKC, Nathan Calder of OKC, Greg Dines of New Orleans, LA, and Caitlin Calder of Muskogee; great-grandchildren Annika Morris, Alex Dines, and William Dines; brother Gary Calder of OKC, sister Dolores Montgomery of Shawnee; aunt Gertrude Pond of Ft. Cobb; and a host of cousins, in-laws, and other family. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at 2:00 pm at the Mercer-Adams Funeral Service chapel. Thank you for sharing in his life with us.
