Darnell May 7, 2000 Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, 13-May-2000 at the First United Methodist Church in Apache for William I. Darnell, 93, of Grangeville, Idaho, who died 07-May-2000 in Grangeville. Officiating was Rev. Linda Pope, pastor. Burial, with military honors, was held in Apache's Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Crews Funeral Home of Apache. Darnell was born 26-Nov-1906 in Apache to Irvin and Lulu Darnell. He married Marie Shade 29-Mar-1931 in Belle Plaine, Kansas. He was raised by his stepmother, Lura, and his father, due to the death of his mother when he was two. He attended school in Apache and the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where he graduated in 1929 as an ensign. He then attended Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Fla. He was a veteran of World War II and was the commander of an aircraft carrier and a destroyer tender. He retired from the Navy in 1955. He moved to La Mesa, Ca. where he received his master's degree in geography from San Diego College and received his California teaching credentials. He then taught school at San Diego High until his retirement in 1969. He and his wife settled in Roseville, Ca. and then recently moved to Grangeville. He was a member of the La Mesa Methodist Church and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, four brothers and three sisters.
