(Smallwood) Ferraro May 18, 1931 — March 17, 2001 Norma L. (Smallwood) Ferraro, 69, of Sonora died Saturday at a Sonora hospital of an unexpected illness. Mrs. Ferraro, the oldest of five children, was born to Clarence and Willa Mae Smallwood in Apache, Okla. Her family moved to California in 1935 and settled in Farmington. She attended Farmington Elementary School and graduated from Escalon High School in 1950. She married Anthony “Tony” Ferraro in 1950 and moved to Stockton, to Modesto in 1954, and to Tuolumne County in 1967. Mrs. Ferraro and her husband bought the Strawberry Store on Highway 108 in 1967 and ran the business for nine years. After they sold the store, they moved to Mi-Wuk Village, and to Sonora in 1982. Mrs. Ferraro also had worked Wilder’s Hallmark gift store in downtown Sonora. Mrs. Ferraro’s family said she was a wonderful homemaker who loved caring for her family. She was a seamstress, cook, gardener, painter, crafter and home decorator. One of her favorite hobbies was bird watching and making birdhouses and feeders. In Modesto, she was active in the Muir Trail Girl Scout Council and PTA. She later took up golf and was a member of the Mountain Springs Golf Club. She also was active with the Sonora 49er Rotary and Figli d’ Italia. Mrs. Ferraro is survived by her husband of 50 years, Anthony Ferraro of Sonora; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Debbie and Paul Simonson of San Luis Obispo, Christine and Dan Tallman of Turlock and Patty and Richard Bourne of Red Bluff; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Joe Smallwood and David Smallwood, both of Modesto; and two sisters, Shirley Blackwood of Santa Rosa and Ruth Smallwood of Seattle, Wash. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Sonora Elks Lodge, 100 Elk Drive in Sonora. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Remembrances may be made to the United Way, or a local Girl Scouts council.
