Beulah Martha Hughes passed away peacefully at her home on March 5, 2007. She was born in Binger, Oklahoma to Jim and Bessie Wood on April 28, 1919. She was the 3rd born of 11 children. She was 4 years old when the family moved to California. Upon moving to California the family lived in Lebec, Arvin then settled in the Panama area. During high school she met the love of her life, H. Verlon Hughes. He was her bus driver and first noticed her shapely legs in the rearview mirror as she walked away. They were married on May 20, 1940. During their early marriage, Beulah was a waitress at the Old River Café while husband Verlon ran the Union Oil Gas Station across the road in downtown Old River. Beulah enjoyed volunteer work. She had the first Brownie troop at Lakeside School with the help of Evelyn Del Papa. She worked at the 'well baby clinic' at Lakeside School under the direction of Dr. Juliet Thorner. During the bad polio outbreak, she and friend Eva Garzelli, went to Greenfield School to assist in prepping patients for their shots. Later, she and friend Anamarie Jensen traveled to Lakeview Church to assist there. For many years she helped prepare food for the annual Lakeside Bar-B-Que. She was a member of Lakeside PTA, South High PTA and West High PTA. She helped work on son, Larry's high school graduation party as well as daughter Nikki's. She was also very active in Cotton Wives. Beulah also enjoyed her many flowers. There were some years when the front lawn did not get mowed because the annual flowers had come up. In later years, she particularly enjoyed the sunflowers she planted. Beulah was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Hank and Chester; sisters, Betty Lake, Lucille Piehl, and Lillie Woods; and her husband, Verlon. She leaves behind brothers, James (Buster) Wood, Ed Wood, and Bobby Wood of Bakersfield, Olen Wood of Olympia, Washington; sister, Frances Ross of Apple Valley, California; her son, Larry and wife, Judy of Bakersfield; granddaughter, Traci and husband, Scott Rhodes; great- grandsons, Aaron and Cameron, all of Collegeville, Pennsylvania; grandson, Randy and wife, Tieada, great- granddaughters, Brecca, Brooklynn, Brynna, and Bridgett; granddaughter, Cynthia and husband, Jason Fisher and daughter, Nikki and husband, Doug Heitman, all of Bakersfield. Rest peacefully, mom, we love you. Chapel services are scheduled for Friday, March 9th, at 3:00 p.m., at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Chapel, 2739 Panama Lane. Visitation begins today Thursday, March 8th, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Beulah M.
