Burial was in the Fort Cobb Cemetery under direction of the Fort Cobb Funeral Home. Mr. Kusel was born March. 9, 1914 in Sheridan, Wyo., the son of a German immigrant, John Christopher KUSEL and Ruby (TOWNSEND) KUSEL and died Sunday March 7, 1999 in Fort Cobb. He grew up in the Big Horn area and attended Big Horn grade school. He graduated from high school in Sheridan in 1931 and went on to earn his bachelor's degree from the University of Wyoming. He also attained his Master's Degree from Oklahoma State University. He started his long-time teaching career in vo-ag at Billings, OK in 1935 and came to Fort Cobb in January of 1940, retiring in 1976. He was married to Dorothy Ellen MOORE Aug. 19, 1941 at Enid. Mr. KUSEL won many awards and honors on the national and state levels. He was recognized as Oklahoma Vo-Ag Teacher and National Vo-Ag Teacher in the 1950's; he earned the FFA National Gold Emblem Chapter Award in 1954; was past president of the Oklahoma Vo-Ag Teachers Assn; his student Claude Millwee showed the International Grand Champion Steer in 1947; one of his students, Henry Bellmon, won election as Governor of Oklahoma and was a United States Senator. He was the coach of the Fort Cobb High School boxing team and his students won many national A.A.U. awards and went on to become Golden Gloves Champions. He had turned down offers in other places so he could stay in Fort Cobb. Mr. KUSEL was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church; was past president of the Fort Cobb Rotary Club and on the board of directors of Caddo County Farmers Union. He was preceded in death by his wife; both parents; and two sisters. Survivors include two sons and four grandchildren.
