The Cyril News August 8, 1957 Two Lose Lives In Car Wreck On Highway 277 Near Cyril Several Are Hospitalized After Crash Lives of two youths, one a resident of Cyril and the other a cadet at the Norman Naval Air station, were lost as the result of a head- on automobile collision a mile northeast of Cyril about 8:20 o'clock Sunday night. Dead are Billy Wayne Keeton, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Keeton, who died at 1:40 a.m. Monday in a Lawton hospital, and William Royce Rogers, 18, of the Norman Naval Air station, who was killed instantly. His home is at Hood River, Ore. In addition, several other boys are in Cyril and Lawton hospitals, some with serious injuries. There were nine boys in the two cars. The accident occurred when young Keeton, driving a 1950 model Ford car, attempted to pass a car driven by Wilburn Jenkins of Route 3 Chickasha, according to Highway Patrolman Mike Hellwege, Anadarko, who investigated the wreck. According to Hellwege's report, Keeton was driving south, as was Jenkins. When Keeton attempted to pass the Jenkins car, his car crashed into the 1952 model Chevrolet driven by Rogers, which was travelling north without headlights which prevented Keeton from seeing the car. Occupants of the car said they had been having trouble with their voltage regulator, causing the lights to fail. In the Keeton car were Richard Deason, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Deason; Gomer Smith, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Utah Smith, and Clifford Burgess, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Burgess, all of Cyril; and Bill Hayes, Jr. and Albert Sanders, both of Cement. In the car driven by Rogers were Malcolm Stroud and Frank Sheythe, all of the Norman Naval Air station. His two companions were moved Sunday night to the Norman Naval hospital. Richard Deason and Gomer Smith both were seriously injured in the accident. Clifford Burgess, the fourth Cyril boy involved, escaped injury. Deason is confined in the Cyril hospital and has a broken right shoulder and suffered shock and concussions. His condition, serious for a time, is now said to be satisfactory. Gomer Smith also suffered a broken right shoulder, and also has a broken left knee and suffered shock and cuts about the head. He at first was admitted to the Cyril hospital but, later, was transferred to the hospital at Lawton where an operation on his knee is scheduled for Monday. Bill Hayes, Jr., Cement, was treated at Cement for cuts about the forehead and chin and released. Albert Sanders, also of Cement, was taken to the hospital at Lawton where he is suffering from broken facial bones and a broken right ankle. His condition is said to be serious. Hellwege said both cars laid down a short track of skid marks before colliding. Rogers' car smashed into the bar ditch on the east side of the road, and Keeton's car went into the ditch on the west side. Both cars were demolished. --------------------------------------------------------------------
