A private service will be held in Ashland followed by a funeral in Topeka, Kan., where he will be buried next to his wife, Clara. He was born July 25, 1906, in Cement, Okla., to Ulysses and Senah McClain. He was raised in St. Mary’s, Kan. As a young man, he studied briefly at the Art Institute of Chicago. On Dec. 3, 1935, in Topeka, Kan., he married Clara Elizabeth Fitzgerald, who preceded him in death. Mr. McClain was a longtime employee of Jordan Sunbeam Bakery in Topeka, Kan. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 2000 from Kansas. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodcarving and puttering around the house. Survivors include a daughter, C. Suzanne Bissey, Ashland; a son, Don Van Valen McClain, Kansas City, Mo.; an older sister, Edith Huntsman, Topeka, Kan.; four grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
