Martinez NORMAN Funeral for Jimmie F. Martinez, 87, Norman, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Minco Church of Christ with Eddie Stoltz and John Grant officiating. Mr. Martinez died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at a Norman veterans center. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Minco, under direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman. He was born Sept. 22, 1917, in Caddo County to Jim Martinez and Rosa Luna Martinez Torres. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Ernest Torres. He attended school in Caddo County and he moved to Centerville. He married Doris Kerlick on Aug. 17, 1940, in Fort Smith, Ark. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was part of the Normandy invasion, landing on Utah Beach. He spent his last year in service fighting in Germany. In May 1945, he and his wife bought a farm north of Carnegie and moved there in January 1946. He was involved in civic organizations including the Kiwanis Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Oklahoma Farm Bureau. He managed the Kimball Grain Elevator for many years. He was a founding board member of the Caddo Kiowa Vocational Technical Center in Fort Cobb. Because of his service on this board, a Fort Cobb street was named after him. He was a member of the Caddo County Fair Board and also served on the Carnegie Tri-County Fair Board. In 1968, they moved to Liberal, Kan., where he served as an elder in Western Avenue Church of Christ. He worked for the Liberal Public Schools until his retirement in 1981. In the summer of 1994, they moved to Norman, to be close to their daughter. He was a member of Alameda Church of Christ and involved in the church outreach program. Survivors include a daughter, Sherri Logan, Norman; a grandson, Jay Logan, Norman; two sisters: Mae Torres Bradshaw and her husband, Dean, Cyril; and Grace Torres Guerrero and her husband, Joe, Lawton; a brother, Leon Torres, Anadarko; and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Jimmie Lynn; four brothers and sisters: Paul Martinez, Pete Martinez, Josie Martinez Lopez and Ernest Torres.
