King & Potomac in Bakersfield, CA for Ethel Mae Petersen, 88, who passed away on March 6, 2006. Pastor Wayne Meade will officiate. Ethel Mae was born on November 24, 1917 in Andarko, OK. She came to California with her mother, Maude Mae Scott, in 1929. She attended Taft Union High School and on December 19, 1936 at the Presbyterian Church in Taft she married her high school sweetheart Irwen "Pete" Petersen. Their early married years were spent in and around Benicia and Sacramento area. They became parents of five children, four boys and a girl. Soon they made their way back to the Taft area where they lived for 60 years, raising their family. When Pete retired, they bought a Fifth Wheel. Ethel Mae loved to travel. They spent time traveling to Europe and Japan. They spent over 20 years traveling and fishing in and around Alaska, Port Angeles, and West Port, Washington. Ethel Mae enjoyed canning the salmon that was caught by Pete and sharing it with her friends and family. She also enjoyed the camping trips to Quartzite, Arizona where they would gather with many of their friends to enjoy everyone's good cooking and storytelling around the campsite. Ethel Mae was very proud of her family. She was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. She loved collecting and reading cookbooks and trying out new recipes on her family. The best memories are the ones around the kitchen table sampling her wonderful meals. Holidays were always truly a glorious time to be at home. Ethel Mae is survived by her beloved husband, Pete of almost 70 years. Her sons, Jim and his wife, Jo of Willamina, Oregon, Jack and Jeff of Glennville, Joel and his wife, Lynn of Vancouver, Washington; and her daughter, Juliana and husband, Robert of Bakersfield. She had nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Her mother, Maude Mae Scott and brother, John Kolarik, preceded her in death. Ethel Mae had many friends and people who cared for her. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Evergreen Healthcare. Also a heartfelt thank you goes to Laura, Steve, Maria and Pastor Wayne from Hoffmann Hospice for the compassionate care and support of Ethel Mae. We would also like to thank all the other caregivers who helped with her care over the years including Mary Lou Fedelia and especially Evelyn and Julio Navarrete.
