Pastor Leo Wyant and BlackStar Wicasa Wikan will officiate. Mr. Ponder, 57, of Medford, died Tuesday (Sept. 3, 2002) at his home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504. He was born Sept. 18, 1944, in Carnegie, Caddo County, Okla., to Ira H. and Faye M. (Halstead) Ponder. On Dec. 9, 1989, in Talent, he married Roberta Shepherd, who survives. Mr. Ponder was a Sishaspa Sioux. He was the principal chief of Northwest Cherokee Wolf Band and was a Cherokee drummer. He lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life. He owned and operated Magnum Security. He also worked in maintenance for Mariposa Apartments, Sears and RV Martin Trucking, and in security for Medford Security. As a young man, he worked as a smokejumper for the U.S. Forest Service. Mr. Ponder served in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed hunting, gun smithing, arts and crafts. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include seven children, Robert D., Paradise, Calif., Troy L., Medford, Sheila Mura, in Florida, Gina Mata, in Nevada, Eric B., Medford, Lisa Mura, Redmond, and Amy M. Ponder, Klamath Falls; his father and stepmother, Ira and Grace Ponder, Central Point; three sisters, Iris Regan, Medford, Linda Hansen, in Virginia, and Glenda Miller, Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Roger, Central Point; and 20 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Faye Ponder. Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, Central Point.
