Roper James Paul "Shorty" Roper, 92, of Maxwell died Oct. 20, 2000, at his daughter's residence in Wallowa, Ore. Born in Cadda County, Okla., he was a longtime Mid-Valley resident. He was a farmer, rancher and heavy equipment operator. He also served on the Maxwell school board for many years. Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Bryant of Wallowa and Pauline Toney of Maher, Colo.; two sons, Stan Roper of Maxwell and Richard Roper of Rock Springs, Wyo.; four sisters, Edna Chism of Sites, Anna Belle Johanson of San Francisco, Lola Guthrie of Tuttle, Okla., and Nellie Jones of Welch, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarcie Roper; one son, Ronald Roper; one daughter, Susie Bryant; two brothers, Ralph Roper and Robert Roper; and four grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to a Maxwell High School Rodeo Fund, the Elks Speech Therapy Fund, or a charity of choice. Services: A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Catholic Church Hall in Maxwell. A private graveside service and inurnment will be conducted.
