S. (Oscar) Sloan THE VERNON (TX) TIMES NEWSPAPER - (Thursday, Nov. 18, 1944) FORMER RESIDENT DIES AT PLAINVIEW... O. S. (Oscar) SLOAN, a former resident of this county and well known to a number of residents in the Doans and Fargo Communities died suddenly of a heart attack in Plainview at his home last week. Funeral services were conducted from the First Baptist Church in that city with Rev. Aaron Shaw and Rev. L.B. Reaves, Baptist Ministers officiating. Interment was made at the Plainview Cemetery. A clipping from a Plainview newspaper, mailed to the Vernon Times for publication by his wife, the former Miss Nell MILLER, a native of this county, gives the following information regarding the death of her husband: "O. S. SLOAN, a resident here the past six years, died of a heart attack late Friday afternoon. He was stricken while sitting in his car at the city auditorium where he was employed as caretaker. A passerby noticed that he was ill and an ambulance was summoned. He died a few minutes after reaching the hospital. Born Sept. 22, 1885, at Cumby in Hopkins County, SLOAN moved with his parents to the Indian territory in Oklahoma when he was a year old. Later he moved from Oklahoma to Vernon where on Oct. 5, 1907, he was married to Miss Clara Nell MILLER, who is among survivors. In 1917 the family moved from Vernon to Amarillo where SLOAN was employed in the Santa Fe railway shops for three years. He then engaged in the real estate business with L.S. GILL (and) for a time was in 1923 joined the Amarillo Police force. In 1925 he became deputy sheriff under Wylie POLLARD and in 1927 the family moved to Eakly, [Caddo Co.] OK, where SLOAN farmed. In 1938 the family moved to Plainview. SLOAN was a member of the Baptist Church. Besides his wife, two daughters; Misses Imogene and Evelyn Sloan, both of Plainview, survive. Also surviving are a brother JOHN SLOAN, Glendale, CA; two sisters; Mrs. J.F. GARRETT, Wichita Falls, and Mrs. James W. PATTERSON, Ft.
