She was born June 16, 1924 in Gracemont, OK to Leonard Cornelius & Ocie Ruth (Carr) Harrison. After attending public schools in Gracemont, OK, LaVerna married Delbert Elliott Salyer on Aug. 3, 1941. Dr. Salyer earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Trinity Univ., San Antonio, TX. She earned her master's and doctoral degrees at the Univ. of Okla. LaVerna devoted her life to educating our youth. She began her teaching career at Thomas A. Edison H.S. in San Antonio, TX and later moved to the OKC area, where she taught at Capitol Hill High School. In October, 1969 she married Lt. Gordon Collett of the Norman Police Department. He had three children, Larry and Kenneth Collett and Wilma Collett Rochel. Gordon later moved to Sulphur. Pursing knowledge with great ambition, LaVerna earned her PhD, and worked as a skilled professor at Rose State College for numerous years and was member of numerous professional sororities. She was a charter faculty member of Oscar Rose Jr. College in 1970, and became a chairperson of the Humanities Div. of Rose State College in 1980. LaVerna was gracious, loving and kind. She was truly loved by her family and her many, many friends. She is now reunited with her parents; 1 infant sister and sister, Betty Jo Marrow; & 1 brother, L.C. Harrison, Jr. She leaves wonderful memories to be cherished by her son, D'Lynn Salyer & wife, Nancy of Anadarko, OK; Daughter, Mary Beth Goodridge & husband, John of Sulphur, OK; Sister, Louise Drake of OKC; 6 Grandchildren: Lynn Salyer & wife, Christy of OKC. Shane Salyer & wife, Holly of Lawton, OK, Tanner Salyer of Anadarko, OK, Julie Cobb & husband, Mark of Reno, NV, Misti Sexton & husband, Danny of Sulphur, OK, John-Paul Elliott Goodridge & wife, Amanda of Bossier City, LA; 10 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephew, cousins, good friends, and special friend, Glen Shoop. Services to celebrate her life and going home were held 10:30 AM Monday, April 17, 2006 at Antioch Christian Church, SW 119 & I-44. Committal services followed at 2:30 PM at Gracemont Cemetery in Gracemont, OK. Services are under the direction of Vondel L.
