All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Bakersfield Californian Julia Pauline (Erdman) Bedinger Services: Friday, July 6, 10 a.m. Julia Pauline (Erdman) Bedinger, age 87, public health nurse and mother, died peacefully at Driftwood Health Center in Torrance, CA on Tuesday, April 17, 2001. She was born March 31, 1914 in Richland, Oklahoma to the late William and Mary (Vorrath) Erdman. Julia moved to California with her father and brothers at the age of four after her mother was killed in a tragic train accident. She attended school in Princeton, California and was the valedictorian of her high school class. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing and in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree in public health. She served as a nurse in the Kern County Public Health Department during the Dust Bowl migration. She met her husband George in Bakersfield and was married August 28, 1943. She followed her husband during World War II to New Haven, Conn while he attended Officers Candidate School at Yale University, returning to Bakersfield after the war to care for her father and son. Later she served as the school nurse at East Bakersfield High School retiring in 1970. During retirement they enjoyed traveling together in their Airstream trailer. She lived on Baldwin Road in Bakersfield where she was an avid gardener for fifty years. She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bakersfield. Julia spent many hours pursuing her interest in genealogy. She left a wonderful legacy of recorded family history. She moved to senior housing in Bakersfield where she starred in a television commercial. Then they moved to Torrance to be near her son and enjoyed new friends and life style near the ocean at Pacific Inn. She later won the hearts of the staff at Spring Retirement Center and Driftwood Health Care Center as a model patient. Julia is survived by her son and his wife, G. Michael and Gail Bedinger, Torrance, CA; two grandchildren, Laura Ann Bedinger and Daniel Hart Bedinger; a niece, Mary Jeanette (Erdman) Cook, Chester, CA; two nephews, James Erdman, Colusa, and William Erdman, Knights Landing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Bedinger in 1995, and four brothers, Fredinand (Fritz) Erdman, Knights Landing; William Erdman, Knights Landing; Frederick and Albert. She is further survived by many relatives and friends. Graveside services for Julia will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 6, 2001 at Union Cemetery, South King Street & Potomac Avenue, Bakersfield, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in her name for the American Diabetes Association, P.O.
