"You'd hear it at every sporting event in Sonoma County," said his son Sheridan Silver. "Babe was his name for both my brother and me." Silver, a Santa Rosa resident, died Sunday at a San Francisco hospital. He was 72. Silver was not himself a great athlete, but he was a major enthusiast. "That was our life, every weekend at one son's or the other's sporting events," said his wife, Maureen Silver. "I think the athletic gene came from my side of the family," said Maureen, a volleyball player. "But the devotion and passion for kids was all Dick's." Dick Silver was a native of Mustang, Okla., where his father owned the town's hardware store and was the mayor during the Depression. "Dick grew up with stories of how his father helped people out who couldn't pay their bills or were going to lose their house," Maureen Silver said. "Dick learned about caring for people from his father." In addition to his two sons, Sheridan, a basketball player, and Derigan, a swimmer, Silver encouraged many others in sports. He helped start Mark West Pee Wee baseball and coached youth soccer and CYO basketball. He was on the board of the Santa Rosa Neptunes and president of the Petaluma Swim Club. Long after his sons graduated from Cardinal Newman High School, he continued to be a regular at high school sports. He was a high school math teacher for 25 years in Albuquerque, Paso Robles and Marin County before moving to Sonoma County, where he became a technical writer for Hewlett-Packard. After retiring in 1998, his hobbies included gardening, playing the piano and traveling. Before he died, he e-mailed his sons: "I wish I could do it all over again. I wouldn't change a thing." In addition to his wife, Maureen, and sons Sheridan of Mountain View and Derigan of Tempe, Ariz., he is survived by a granddaughter. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Daniels Chapel of the Roses in Santa Rosa. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Canadian County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/canadian/canadian.html
