She was embraced by love, comfort and prayers, with her children at her side. She struggled valiantly with Alzheimer's disease for fourteen years before finally giving up the fight. JoEva was born August 2, 1922, in Minco, married the love of her life, Harold Frederick (Shorty) Sand on July 17, 1940 in El Reno, OK. They enjoyed forty-two years of marriage together before Harold passed from his earthly life in October 1982. She was also predeceased by her mother and father sister, Margaret Burton Jones, El Reno, OK; brother, Garold Burton, Roswell, NM and infant brother and sister Paul and Ila Pauline Burton, Minco, OK. She is survived by four children; Sharon Sand Stone and husband Cecil, Hermitage TN; Harold Sand and wife Sharron, Wagoner OK; Gwen Sand Wharton and husband Bart; Norman OK; and Jan Sand Melton and husband Phil, Henderson TN; sister, Edna Burton Bowers, El Reno, OK; a loving legacy of nine grandchildren; Cyndi Stone Holland (Ken), Scott Stone and Jane, Randy Sand and Teresa, Lisa Sand Homburger and Todd, Jeff Briscoe and Kim, Malinda Truog and Ross, Pam Wharton Ledgerwood and Jim, Shari Wharton Calia, and Lisa Wharton Mattich and Jeff; nineteen beloved great- grandchildren; Mitch and Halley Holland, Alana and Jenna Stone, Randy, Steven and Staci Sand, Billy and Brennan Hutchens, Brian, Mitch and Amia Homburger, Amber and Ryan Ledgerwood, Brett Wilson, Kartina and Cannor Calia, Natalie and Blake Mattich, and 'granddaughter by love', Jennifer Gibson; five sisters-in-law, which include her 'sisters of the heart', Lorena Swaffar and Phyllis Burton; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. JoEva was employed by Penney Termite Company as office manager for many years where she enjoyed many enduring friendships. But her favorite role in life was that of wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, sister and aunt. She was a long-time member of Putnam City Baptist and Millwood Baptist Church. Her faith and Christian values were evident in her daily life to all that knew her. The family would like to thank Dr. Tom Merrill and nurse Pam for adding love and support to the professional care provided to their Mother. There are no words to describe the love, care, devotion and spiritual support we received from the wonderful team at Carter Hospice of Oklahoma City; especially Nurse Liz, Chaplain Mary and Aide Janice. Thank you for helping JoEva to maintain the highest possible level of dignity, comfort, and quality of life. Particular affection is in our hearts for special friends Lonnie Moore, Brenda Opie and Bonnie Hill, Sharon and Cecil Stone's SS class, and other friends for their prayers and personal ways of helping the family to have an occasional break and encouragement. JoEva's family and wide circle of friends have had their Christian faith reinforced by witnessing her determination and fortitude in the face of the many adversities and assaults against her mind and person over the years by the Alzheimer's disease process. To the end she maintained the dignity, beautiful smiling face and eyes, sweet nature and totally unselfish character we have always respected and admired. The difference she has made in the lives she touched will always be remembered. The family will receive guests Sunday, 2-5 PM at Havenbrook Funeral Home. Services will be held at Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman at 10 AM Tues., 3/4/03 with Brother Max Alexander, Putnam City Baptist Church officiating.
