She was the second child of thirteen children born to S.I. and Lelia Emery. She passed from this life at daybreak, February 17, 2003, her 6lst wedding anniversary, in Raymore, Missouri. Dawn spent her early years in central and northern Michigan, where her father was a minister. For many years her family home was in the area of the south shore of Clam Lake, near Bellaire, Michigan. In the early 1940's her family lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where her father was president of Colorado Springs Bible Training School, now Oklahoma Wesleyan University. While there she met a young ministerial student named Lyle Tullis. On February 17, 1942 they were married and in the summer of 1942 they moved to Newkirk, Oklahoma where Lyle was assigned his first pastorate. As these were the war years, very soon Lyle was in the Army and Dawn was raising a young son alone. After the war, they lived in southern Michigan while Lyle attended Central Michigan University and Michigan State University. In the early 50's they moved to Hermiston, Oregon, and later, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and El Monte, California. While in California Dawn earned her bachelors and master's degrees at California State University, Los Angeles. She taught school at Montrose Elementary in Glendale, California until the family moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma during the summer of 1964. Along with her husband, Lyle, she taught at Oklahoma Wesleyan University, generally in the areas of education and psychology. In 1972 the family moved to Yukon, Oklahoma and she returned to her first love, teaching young children. For many years she taught first grade at Lake Park Elementary, in the Putnam City district. In recent years, she traveled extensively with Lyle, usually on long driving trips throughout the United States and Canada. She was an avid reader and loved making things with her hands. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lyle, of Yukon, Oklahoma; three sons, Ross and his wife Laura, of Raymore, Missouri, Rex and his wife Phyllis of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and K.J. and his wife Alice of Yukon, Oklahoma; grandchildren Lance Tullis, Jonathan Tullis, Renee Gorny, Rhett Tullis, and Patricia Tullis; three great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, 2 brothers and many many friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, S.I. and Lelia Emery and 7 sisters. Special thanks to Jeanie, Deanna, Barbara, and all of the nurses and staff of the Foxwood Springs Living Center that gave Dawn that extra-special and attentive care during her final illness. Memorials can be made in her name to Southern Nazarene University. Services are at 7:00 p.m., Friday evening, February 21, at the Oklahoma City First Church of the Nazarene, with private interment in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery on Monday, February 24, 2003.
