Anita was born October 8, 1934 in Woodford, Oklahoma and she passed away July 11, 2007 in Bakersfield, California. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Vurnia Nelson. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jody Crosthwait; daughters, Dawn, Dana and Jeanice; son, Joel and grandchildren, Jill, Kelli, MavRick, Cassidy, Joletta, Jody, Maury and Cody. Anita was a Kern County resident for over 50 years, an accomplished musician, as well as a breeder and trainer of world champion show horses for well over 25 years. In the music industry she was known as a little gal, with a world of showmanship and boasts a big voice with applause-getting quality. During the usual round of entertaining, she was featured vocalist with such top performers as Jimmy Wakely, Gene Autry, Slim Whitman, Billy Walker and Tex Williams. She formed her own group, along with her husband, Jody, and headlined all across the county. The Anita Cross Show was one of the finest groups in the entertainment field. Anita had a way with an audience that is far from the ordinary. From the minute the curtain would rise she could hold them in the palm of her hand with a magnificent selection of tunes that range from standard hits to her own compositions. She could bring a tear to the eye with her fine treatment of ballads, and in the next breath make you laugh with her ability for comedy. Along with all of her accomplishments, she continued to be an extraordinary wife, a compassionate and loving mother/step-mother and an exceptional grandmother.
